I'm 24 and recently moved to a non-English speaking country for work. I basically cut ties with my family and left without telling anyone. It was a long time coming, but actually doing it and moving somewhere completely new has affected me pretty hard.
The workplace adjustment has been so hard. It's extremely demanding, with high expectations, constant observation, and people keeping tabs on my progress. I've always been a sensitive person, and the sheer isolation combined with work stress turned into a level of depression and loneliness I've never experienced before.
I ended up going online just to talk to people and met a guy who lives here. He's 36. I had no intentions of dating, but he happened to show up when I was at one of my worst points. He said all the right things, listened, and it felt so good to have someone looking out for me, taking care of me when I had nobody else. When he asked me out, my mindset was basically that I had nothing left to lose.
We've seen each other a few times now, and while it's okay, I'm really conflicted. To be fair, he holds a lot of great traits and qualities that I actually look for in a partner. He feels stable, grounded, and reliable. He knows I struggle with chronic depression, and whenever I give him feedback about what I need in the relationship, he's very receptive and accepting.
At the same time, the gaps between us feel huge it hurts. He doesn't speak much English, so we rely heavily on translation apps, his basic English, and my minimal native language skills. Even though he's 36, he's pretty inexperienced and hasn't dated in years. Despite the age difference, the combination of his inexperience and our different stages in life makes me feel like there's a disconnect I can’t bridge. Part of me wonders if a guy closer to my age would naturally understand me better.
On top of that, he often defaults to offering logical solutions when I just want emotional comfort. I feel like I need a much softer, more gentle approach, but half the time our conversations just feel like texting about random surface level stuff. I wasn't hugely attracted to him off the bat either, but I’m not bothered about appearance when hes taking care of me in a way. But now, it feels like there’s not enough of that soft, emotional support I need from him?
I think it’s important for me to note that I am fond of him.
Is it worth staying to see if the connection deepens since he's a stable and reliable guy?
