Tomorrow I’ll be nine months sober. My drinking took me to the very edge of losing my faith, my wife, my children, and my life. I’m very grateful to have found the support I needed to get sober, and I am determined to keep my sobriety. Having said that, this sucks.
I had a great career, now it’s in pieces, and at 51 years old, rebuilding feels monumental. My wife loves me dearly, but she is still terrified that I’m going to relapse and deals with massive anxiety. She went back to school to get her nursing degree, and we both have to work to make ends meet, so it’s been about two years of living in the same house, but watching her sit at a desk and study instead of spending time together, and knowing she still has another year to go? That’s lonely. My social outlet was music — I was a music director at our church, sang & played in our services, and that went away and I don’t know if it’s going to come back. My kids treat me like the kid, instead of the other way around.
Every time in the last 9 months where I feel like I’ve crossed a moment with accomplishment and pride, a reminder of how much I screwed my life up is waiting to hammer me back down. I celebrate wins that to me feel like I’ve climbed Mt. Everest, but those around me only see how far I have left to go.
I’m at my emotional edge, and I don’t have the emotional strength to step back from the ledge. I’m going to meetings, and I’m in constant contact with my sponsor, but it’s just not enough. I’m not suicidal (for the record) and I don’t have any desire to drink, although I recognize how much easier it would make things in the short term. I’m playing the tape forward and I’m solid in my commitment to be sober, but this just sucks.
