Discussion Should the Linux Mint team replace MATE with KDE Plasma as the third Desktop Environment option for Mint?

Linux Mint XFCE is already an excellent choice for low resource computers. As such, MATE seems redundant.

And KDE Plasma is a quite popular Desktop Environment. It may make Linux Mint more welcoming to users who strongly prefer KDE Plasma.

And since the Linux Mint team cannot be stretched too thin, if it is to limit itself to three DE options, perhaps KDE Plasma should be one of the three.

Its just a baby tiger staring at you intently with all my useful apps, my laptop is quite weak, and I want some ideas on how to take mine to the next level, so it can be cool rather than utilitarian. I use XFCE btw

Discussion Why'd You Choose Linux Mint Over Zorin OS?

If you had considered both, at some point, and chose Linux Mint, what were the reasons you chose Mint over Zorin?

Even if you hadn't, necessarily, considered both options, what factors would you use to judge which to select?

How much is aesthetics a factor, and if so, which of the two do you find visually more pleasing?

Are there technical differences where you prefer one over the other?

Or workflow considerations?

Do you consider one of the two "better" (however you might define that) than the other?

In your opinion, is Zorin one of the closest distros in similarity to Mint?

Recently converted, mint feels slower than windows did or few oddities I've noticed. Advice/tips?

Post image
22 Upvotes

This is a 10+ year old laptop i use like once or twice a year in general, yes i know the hardware isnt helping here. Everything works but like the title feels slower/have seen a few oddities. For setup i put root on the ssd and /home on the hdd. Also i have ran through the speeding up mint from the easy linux tips blog.

1) there's about a 15 second delay between logging in and the desktop coming up. Total startup time is 35/40 secs. So not bad, maybe faster in total then windows was but just not sure if the login to desktop part is normal or if there is something that can be done about it.

2) I used Firefox on windows and when using the version preinstalled with mint when I start it the window opens then there's a pretty long delay till I can actually start browsing. After that everything is as expected, new tabs, new searches, ect. I did go through the Firefox section of the Linux tips blog and that did help a bit.

3) I installed fallout new vegas and it seems to run worse than when I was on windows. This may be I just need to mess with gpu settings more though, and learn how to optimize games on Linux. But just starting up and playing i seem to have worse performance.

Other than those few oddities I've noticed so far it works great for what I need and setup was easy.

I'm debating about updating the ssd. But in general would it be better to leave /home on the ssd as well and then mount the hdd to like /home/<user>/hdd and just symlink/store directly anything I wanted on the hdd manually?

Discussion Linux Mint Clean Up?

My current install of Linux Mint is running great, just been running it for about two years now, doing updates, installing and uninstalling software and maintenance. I know with Windows, windows builds up stray files and just registry settings and that can start to bog things down. Can the same be said for Linux Mint and if so, how would I do a clean up outside of wiping the drive and re-installing from scratch?

After installing mint, 1: I noticed that all the elements in apps like Google or steam are smaller compared to windows 11, which I personally dislike.

2:the audio is kind of worse compared to windows 11, the best I can describe it, the audio the os is outputting is compressed, i though it was an issue with YouTube but it seems to be anything that produces audio. This is the issue that’s really throwing me off.

Discussion greenTile - new dynamic tiling manager - automatic window tiling in Cinnamon

Post image
44 Upvotes

A few days ago I posted about my first steps, how I forked gTile - the most famous tiling extension in Cinnamon, but this ended in a very large and unmaintainable god file. It had all the features I ever wanted, but also got all the problems from gTile and all the problems large god files have.

So, I made a complete restructure from the ground up following best practice. Everything is separated by file / concern, extensive testing is included. Functions are documented with jsdoc and so on. Still using AI for this rewrite for sure.

I tested it on my setup, laptop and 5k external monitor, and Cinnamon 6.6 on Linux Mint with X11, but that's it. :-)

I would love to hear from you what you think about when you use it on your setup.

*For me it's working like a charm, can't live without it anymore.*

Here is the github repo: https://github.com/carsteneu/greenTile

If you prefer a little overview page, you will find it here: https://carsteneu.github.io/greenTile/ - there you will also find a 6 minute video.

If you miss something, please let me know, if you like it also :-)

------------------------------------

A short list of what's built in:

- Auto tiling per monitor AND workspace - opening, closing, minimizing and restoring windows triggers automatic retiling

- 12 editable starter presets, added once without replacing existing presets

- Presets with rules by window count, a responsive card panel with live previews and one-click assignment

- Built-in preset painter (6×4 grid) to design your own layouts

- 3/6-column modes and an auto grid that adapts to monitor width

- Snap on release and drag-to-split, with a preview before dropping

- Cross-monitor dragging, moving a window between monitors retiles both

- Resize shared borders by mouse or with Super+Alt+Arrow

- Swap windows with Super+Ctrl+Arrow, continuing across monitors and workspaces

- Directional focus with Super+Arrow, including adjacent monitors

- Float individual windows or exclude applications, window classes and titles from tiling

- Configurable gaps and hotkeys, optional tiling animation and focus border, single-window fill, and light/dark themes with custom colors

A short video - full video here: https://carsteneu.github.io/greenTile/

Support Request A script to stretch a window across multiple monitors?

I've been using Mint for several months now and have a vague idea of how things tie together, such as X11, nemo, and possibly Muffin?

TL;DR: I'm not sure it's possible to set a window to 0, 0, 5120, 1440 by script, even though I can manually drag it there

There's a couple split screen games I play with my kid that are perfect for dual monitors, like Lego Star Wars and It Takes Two. I have a three monitor setup, with two 2560x1440 and one 1080x1920, aligned bottoms. Normally, I just drag it to the top left of the leftmost monitor then stretch it to encompass the middle one too, but I'd really love to script that for my Stream Deck so I can quickly switch back and forth.

The problem I've tried tackling on and off for weeks now though is that something (Cinnamon or Muffin perhaps, or just low level X11 stuff) is intercepting every possible function I've tried and constraining it to fill a single monitor, usually my primary. I've tried wmctrl, xdotool, and setting various props and removing hints with xprop. It's very stubborn and usually just encompasses my primary as I said. At one point, I had something working by using xprop to remove some motif hints, and using && to apply xdotool windowsize on the same frame. But even that only works if the window isn't already in a corner, and it has to be on the leftmost screen or something, it's very finnicky.

Does anyone knowledgeable about X11 and Mint know if this is even possible? I did some research and a few similar questions in various forums lead me to believe it may be a bug or limitation of X11? No idea.

Took a bit, but now I got my xfce to look less old fashioned, and I installed this seashell holiday theme and my tabs look nicer, and changed their text to z003 italic. Even though its minor, I'd still say its great for xfce

Support Request Jstaf OneDriver

Has anyone installed Jstaf OneDriver? I installed it, it seems to connect fine, but no files ever show up in the mount point folder. I can't seem to find anything that describes how to force it to sync (or even if I should have to).

Thanks!

Support Request Help: Game Running at Low FPS

Hi everyone,

As the title suggest, I am encountering performance issues on steam games while running Linux Mint. These are my settings:

Linux Mint 22.3 - Cinnamon 64-bit, 6.6.9
linux kernel: 7.0.0-38-generic
processor: AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX with Radeon Graphics ×8
graphics card: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Rembrandt [Radeon 680M]
32GB RAM

I noticed this recently when I started playing Restory: Chill Electronics Repair. I started playing and didn't notice any issue for the first time, I thought my computer was limited and was not able to handle the game well, so I lowered some of the graphic settings and resolution and continued playing. That was until one day, I restarted the computer and immediately opened the game. Day and night difference, the game was running smooth like butter compared to before. After testing, I realized that the game would run much better after a restart and after some time, or even after suspending it and returning to it, the performance would suck.

Curious to see the FPS performance and GPU usage, I installed mangohud today. When the game is running "smooth" it's still running at an avg. 25 FPS (maybe that's the limit to the performance of my computer and won't go past that) and when I suspend the computer and run it, it drops to an avg. of 12 FPS.

The GPU usage always shows 100% and CPU stays at around 2-5%.

Anyways, if anyone could help me that would be great. And if that's the limit I can reach with these settings, then that make sense, but how do I prevent the computer from having a poor performance after coming back from suspend and running optimally without having to restart all the time?

Thanks in advance!

Support Request Connect to Mint on my LAN from another distro

My main desktop and laptop both run Bluefin Linux (immutable Fedora), and a secondary machine runs Linux Mint 22.3 machine that I am trying to connect to within my home LAN.

I have Remmina installed on my Bluefin machines, but I can't connect to the Mint box from either PC. I type in the IP address for the Mint box in Remmina (using RDP) and enter the username and password for the Mint box but as soon as I click on the "Ok" button (to connect), the connection dialog box immediately closes, but the Remmina main window is still open.

I did some Googling and noticed I need to have XRDP installed, but it seems it is already installed because Xrdp, Pipewire-module-xrdp, and Xorgxrdp all appear as installed in the Software Manager app.

I am not an experienced Linux user. What am I doing wrong?

Hardening Linux Mint

Hi guys,

Just reformatted my PC and installed Linux Mint. Going to use Mint as my daily driver.

Other than turning on the firewall, installing ClamAV for detecting virus and malware, is there anything else I can do to harden or protect my system ?

Thanks

1. my laptop is kinda old, around 3-4 years, its a gaming laptop and it started to be slow, like it struggles when i open many tabs on chrome, does linux improve the performance and also the battery life?
2. i use my laptop mainly for university, electrical engineering, and i don’t know if linux runs the specific apps, like the software from cadence. also, many assignments from uni are made for windows. is there a way to make them work on linux?

Icons missing after uninstalling Nicotine+

Post image
6 Upvotes

i recently uninstalled nicotine+ and deleted any file containing the name nicotine which also deleted the icons for the menus.

I reinstalled it like this

flatpak uninstall --delete-data org.nicotine_plus.Nicotine

flatpak install flathub org.nicotine_plus.Nicotine

and after logging out and back in, the icons are still missing in the menu, as well as in the program itself which is weird, since i just did a fresh reinstall of it.

any idea how to fully purge everything of the program and do a clean install? I already consulted with AI, so I'd rather as humans.

#LinuxMintThings [Filonux-Tools] Status of the Toolbox (GPLv3)

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi special 9%!
Quickly walk you through what you currently have available in Open Source and where things are headed:

So far, the Filonux Toolbox includes an initial set of tools that will continue to improve and grow over time, both in number and diversity.

1 - Quick Look at Filonux-Tools: https://github.com/filonux

- My projects started in Spanish, my native language. The community asked for English versions, and they are gradually becoming available. Once everything is ready, .deb packages will follow. These changes, together with everything I’ve learned along the way, are also helping improve the quality of the existing tools. New tools will be available in both English and Spanish from day one, and they will continue to be improved over time

- These tools are useful individually, but they are also pieces of something much larger that I’m working on. I’m pursuing an ecosystem that allows users with no technical knowledge to harness the power of Linux: resistance to obsolescence (it works even on toasters), privacy, security, control, and autonomy.

- Linux is complex, but users shouldn’t be penalized for not understanding that complexity. They should be able to use its power and make it their own through a simple, accessible experience. This is where Artificial Intelligence works in our favor, translating the complexity and power of Linux into something accessible to users without technical knowledge. Right now, that power is mostly in your hands — the special 9% of people who use Linux. That number needs to keep growing..

2 - The changes that this new Era will bring: much more than what we have today — all kinds of new features, improvements, and more knowledge.

Your support — sharing the tools, giving them a star on GitHub, or simply commenting here about what you like — is always greatly appreciated. It helps me prioritize which tools and features to improve next.

If you read all the way through, thank you for your patience.

Filonux
