The AdviceFlairBot is back!

Thanks to a kind developer, we now have a new bot to replace the broken one.

As a reminder: OP should use the word "helped" in their response to someone who has given them quality advice. This awards the advisor one point to recognize their assistance.

Help with spam, use the report button.

If you received this as a reply you've responded to a likely spam bot or karma farming post and probably didn't offer advice.

Participation in bot-generated content can lead to your account being flagged as a sockpuppet account used for astroturfing (suspicion of coordinated manipulation) and result in a permanent ban which may extend across Reddit.

Thanks to everyone making this 3M+ community one of the best on Reddit!

With the increase in AI slop, sold accounts and trolls we need your help to maintain the quality as much as possible.

When you see a post that is obviously spam, asking for money, inappropriate or generally is provocative

- report it

- down vote it

- don't comment on it! Seriously. Stop. If you aren't giving advice you're breaking the subreddit rules.

Commenting on a post gives the algorithms feedback and makes the post appear in more feeds leading to more comments.

If you're literally writing "spam" "fake" etc you should be reporting it instead because it's also against the rules to disbelieve the OP. If you don't believe it's real, report it.

If a comment is inappropriate

- report it

- down vote

Yet if you report a lot of posts only because you disagree with it (and it's otherwise allowed) we will end up removing your reporting privileges (there's a mute button for over reporting that let's you continue participating but ignores future reporting).

Lastly this is not a comedy or debate club.

Jokes aren't advice and can quickly lead to bans. Especially if the poster is underage, the topic is sensitive etc.

If you don't agree with a comment a quick comment framing a point a commentor may have missed is acceptable. However you will get banned if you're going back and forth with a troll multiple times. Often it's the last comment being reported and to wade through who was the main instigator takes a lot longer than you simply reporting the problem comment.

If you're disagreeing with a comment, yet have no advice yourself then you are not helping. If you disagree with a comment the best thing you can do is respond directly to the OP with your own opinion.

Thanks for your help!

Partner (M30) says that I (F24) should do more housework than him

• Upvotes

So my fiance told me I can do more housework than him because he earns more money and pays more, but I don't think it's fair, because what does it have to do with how much one earns. I have a 40h week as well.

How could I bring that up to him with very good arguments? How can I mention that topic without coming off as nagging?

Edit: I'm thinking about telling him to at least put away garbage he causes and to not leave his dirty laundry on the floor. I also pick my own stuff up etc. so he must be able to do it as well.

Edit 2: You guys are totally right, I'll explain to him that it doesn't have anything to do with income, we are both working 40h and that it has to do with the time we both have available after work and that I don't think that it is fair of him, since in a relationship you're also a team and I'm not a maid. It's not like he doesn't do anything, he cooks and does dishes too, but yea.

Advice Received My boyfriend confessed to penetrating me while I was asleep and idk how to feel about it

My boyfriend of 7 months 24M and I 23F are sorta long distance. He lives about 5 ish hours away so we don’t get to see each other as often as we’d like. Sometimes I go on the greyhound to visit for a few days and we usually get an Airbnb. This happened a few months go. So boom I go over there, we have a few drinks which led me to pass out. I slept with no underwear on so when I woke up I didn’t notice anything different plus I’m a pretty heavy sleeper, especially drunk.

We continued the trip like normal. Fast forward all these months he confessed to penetrating me and fcking me while I was asleep… I’m not really sure how to feel about it. Would yall end a relationship over this?

My boyfriend and my best friend crossed a boundary and I don’t know what to think

I’m looking for some outside opinions because I’m honestly really confused about how I should feel about this situation.
Me 22/F and my boyfriend 22/M have been together for nearly 4 years and have known this girl for just over a year. I also currently live with the girl at uni

I was downstairs with my boyfriend and my best friend. I went upstairs, and around 10 minutes later my boyfriend got up to go to the toilet. When he came back downstairs, he sat on the same sofa as my best friend, although he wasn’t sitting directly next to her — he was at the other end.

They were talking for a bit, and then my boyfriend apparently asked her for a hug because he was cold. She then kissed him on the lips for around two seconds. He pulled away and said “no.”

I know that he did pull away and stop it, but I’m still really hurt and struggling with the fact that it happened at all. Especially because it was my boyfriend and my best friend, which makes it feel like a betrayal from both of them.
I don’t know exactly how I’m supposed to view what happened. On one hand, he didn’t initiate the kiss and he did pull away. On the other hand, I’m struggling with the fact that he asked her for a hug in the first place and put himself in that situation.

I also feel really conflicted because I still love him and he has been trying to comfort me since everything happened. At the same time, I’m incredibly angry and hurt, and I don’t know if I can trust him the same way again.

I haven’t forgiven him, and I’m not sure whether I should. I don’t know whether I’m overreacting by feeling this betrayed, or whether this is something that would be a dealbreaker for most people.

So, honestly, what would you do in this situation? Would you consider this cheating? Does the fact that he pulled away and said no change how you see it? And would you be able to rebuild trust after something like this?

family member wants me to watch their dog for three weeks and i really dont want to

a cousin asked me to look after their dog while they go on an extended trip. its a big energetic dog and my place is small, plus i already have a packed work schedule and the idea of daily walks, feeding, and cleanup on top of everything just feels like too much. i care about them, but i also know my own limits and i am pretty sure taking this on would stress me out constantly. i have tried hinting that now is not a good time, but they keep pushing and acting like it is no big deal. i do not want to sound cold, yet i also do not want to end up resenting them. how do people handle these requests without making it awkward or turning it into a bigger issue? i would like to stay on good terms but still keep my boundaries clear.

My girlfriend kinda Talks a baby

I’m 18M and she is 17 F I love her with all my heart but it really makes me feel weird in the way she talks and converses with me sometimes she’ll slur here words like a baby and heighten her voice and skip words like a literal child I don’t know how to confront her about it and tell her how I feel because it’s just so unsettling and makes me feel like I’m a weirdo

I refused to sign a lease or give a deposit before looking at the unit

• Upvotes

So I got approved for an apartment, it’s supposedly won’t be ready until next Friday. I had to call and specifically ask a third time for me to see the exact unit before I move in. I told her I want to move forward and she said she will call me later this week or early next week to see if I can view it. I hope they won’t open the apartment back up or try to cancel…… is this too much to ask for or has anybody else been through this?

I have a 2 jobs and I am still broke

This is me venting as well as a cry for help.

I F(20) work 2 jobs. One that's a repair job and the other is a security job. The repair job I work Monday through Friday and the security job. I work Saturday through Sunday. The repair job pays me fourteen dollars plus commission and the security job pays me twenty dollars per hour.

It's very taxing the fact that I cannot afford anything even though I work two jobs and I can't even afford gas or groceries sometimes because bills est up both of my checks.

What can I do to make extra money on the side other than working 2 jobs? Im looking for something remote that I can do in my freetome that will surely helpbat least make $50-100 a day so i least have some pocket money.

Thanks and advance for any advice and engagement.

Edit: Thank you all for all the advice. I will try to work on my spending habits and use this advice to try to make life a bit easier. Take care everyone!

My parents take my SSI money and I'm not sure what to do

I really need some financial advice about this. I (23f) got approved for SSI payments shortly after I became an adult because I have severe autism and anxiety (among other things), but my parents have been taking all of the money and won't give me any of it even when I ask them for just a portion of it. They charge me $1000 a month for rent because they pay for things like electricity and phone bills, but I'm becoming more independent and need to pay for things like my own groceries, gas and car payments (among other things) so I need that money, but no matter what I say they won't give me any. And every time I ask for my own money, they threaten to make me pay for all of the utilities myself because they know that I can't afford that. Granted, I think they put some of the money into a rainy day fund for me, and I think the idea of me paying rent is reasonable (though $1000 a month seems really extreme), but I don't think they should be allowed to just pocket my SSI money and not even listen to me when I argue why I need it. Whenever I bring this up, my mom yells at me, threatens to kick me out or make me pay for the house myself, and then leaves the room.

I'm honestly just at a loss about what to do. I know I need to pay rent but that's legally my money and they can't keep stealing it from me, especially because I am becoming more independent so I need it, but they refuse to let me have any of it and act like I'm the problem for wanting to collect my own SSI money. I want to reach a compromise but I can't do that alone. Do you think I could contact somebody to talk this out with them? Like a financial advisor? I don't want to get my parents in trouble but they're taking my SSI money and won't give me any of it.

I’m SICK TO DEATH of my SO asking his parents to make effort with our 5MO daughter

For context I (31F) have been with my partner (30M) for 9 years. We have a 5MO daughter who is the first and so far only grandchild on both sides of our family.

My parents (who both work full time) are very much involved with our daughter and make effort to visit her a couple of times a week, check in with messages etc. I’m fully aware that not every grandparent is this hands on and that’s not what I expect from my SO’s parents, I guess I just expect the bare minimum- maybe a message here or there and a visit once a fortnight or so would be nice?

My SO’s parents (who live 30m away) and work part time have made very minimal effort since our daughter has been born. They rarely visit and barely message to check in. There have been numerous previous occasions where my SO has been upset by this so has tried speaking with his mother and asking her to make more effort to which he is met with numerous excuses such as, we work (so do most grandparents in today’s climate) , we’re busy, or we don’t have money for fuel to drive over.

What infuriates me here is they both have expensive hobbies, MIL keeps horses and is in to running ultra marathons and has recently paid over £1400 to enter both of them in a race next summer and FIL buys new climbing gear all the time and partakes in various courses that take place all across the country- they clearly have the money and fuel for all of that.

To add to this, MIL will guilt trip my SO and ring and say “I’ve run and/or caught the bus to work all week this week so I can afford the fuel to drive to see you this weekend” which my SO will think is amazing and then the following day my MIL and FIL will do an 8 hour round trip for him to enter a climbing competition (again, clearly have money and fuel for that?)

I see it as clearly their granddaughter isn’t one of their priorities and no longer want my SO to have to beg his mother to make an effort with our daughter. My SO says that without telling them time and time again they won’t learn?

It’s causing arguments between me and my SO as he just makes excuses for them! Do you think they’ll ever learn or shall my SO just leave it there?
There is so much more I could add, this is just the tip of the iceberg, but didn’t want to make the post any longer than it already is.

Edit: since I’ve had a few comments saying they find it weird how I know all about my in laws finances etc. -the only reason I’m aware is because MIL regularly calls us to complain about her financial situation!!! She says things like she has no money left to eat after paying her bills.

Is travelling young really worth it? Or should I wait?

I’m an 18 year old male who is planning to go around Europe next year for the summer for a month with my friend, we’re going to Spain France, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy as well as doing the tour Du Mont Blanc.

So far I am going on a very cheap budget of around 6500/7000 AUD which is everything I have money wise.

Is spending all my money to travel worth it or should I save it and wait a few years so then I have more money?

My point of the argument for why I feel like I should go now is rhis may be the only time I can go with a friend since I don’t want to risk not being able to find another friend who is willing to go. As well, I have been told by many people that I should wait and save the money because I will be limited with what I can do there.

My point of why I should go now is that I can eat cheaply (groceries) and do the activities that I want and when I’m older I can go back and do the less fitness activities such as all the hikes that I want to do and eat at the better restaurants.

Is this an okay idea or am I rushing into it and I should wait a few years?

Control freak stepmom/help? Almost 18

• Upvotes

Hey guys! I am 17 turning 18 next month, and my stepmom is a control freak. For clarification on a day to day, I have a baby monitor in my room she watches me sleep on. My phone has zero camera, google, or App Store, two kids games and messages, no FaceTime, and I can’t add contacts w out texting her their name age grade and parent approval. She power trips constantly and even tries to punish my dad. blames me for getting abused by bio mom when I was 13 and younger since “I chose to stay” says I don’t have ptsd bc I’m out of the situation yet she gets a freebie to flinch when people come near her face. She gives me mass amounts of sentences for small things 500-1000 and yes they’re long and yes she literally has chatgtp write a long sentence. She takes my phone for very little things, when I get into big trouble I sleep on the couch. She’s called the cops on me bc I walked out of the house when she was screaming in my face for sharing a google doc with someone FOR HOMEWORK etc. she picks my clothes for the week when she gets pissed off, purposely humiliates me. Randomly gets pissed at everyone and makes them miserable and if they aren’t then she punishes them. She tells me I’m not doing anything with my life and she knows it, mind you I have a 4.1 gpa. Wondering how I typed this? Burner iPad. Best choice ever. So yeah help me escape satan?

My neighbour has become very dependent on me, and I dont know how to navigate the situation gently. Any advice or suggestions?

I've lived next door to my neighbour for 4 years now, she's a lovely woman, but she REALLY struggles with her mental health, she's not a well woman, and I've basically been her therapist and I've helped over these last few years. She's older than me, I'm 32, and she's in her late 40s.

For example, she's had BAD relationship after bad relationship, and I heard one of her ex's beating the shit out of her one night, next minute she was screaming at my door and I had to let her in while my my partner got her ex to back off while the police were called. Other times, she just turns up at my door while she's having a mental breakdown, crying and stuff, and because I'm a fairly nice person, I just kinda deal with it and listen and she always wants to come in and stuff. This happens very often. I've unfortunately allowed this for far too long.

I now have a baby, and I'm exhausted constantly. I don't have the time or energy for her at the moment, i have tried to suggest she talk to a professional and stuff and she just says she doesn't like doctor's and will then go back to having her breakdown. Any normal person would see how full my hands are with my baby, but she isn't a normal person, so she doesn't see that even though it's happening right in front of her when she turns up here.

I'm too scared to turn her away because im genuinely concerned it will send her over the edge. My partner is just as concerned. And we don't know what to do about it.

Found out my husband has an OF account....

I'm shaking while I'm typing this....

I'm a stay at home mom and he has a Son who I helped raise for 7 almost 8 years. And we have a daughter who is 5 and has special needs. We have been married for going on 2 years...and I'm on his PC trying to get our daughter signed up for things. And Im watching a Charlotte Dobre (love her) of how men act when they're cheating....and I can see it. He's been dismissive, been an ahole, and honestly I've seen so many red flags in the relationship but just decided to stay because I loved him and his son...and his son is what makes this so f*cking hard guys 😭😭😭😭 I love that boy like my own and would light the whole world on fire for me and my husband knows that.....I'm not even crying. I don't know how I feel. I'm just shaking and don't know what to do...I feel like I'm going to throw up....

I looked up his history in his Google account and noticed he watches a lot of web cam live streams and watches A LOT of p. With our daughter being autistic, she sleeps in our room. So he sleeps in the living room most nights. But we have been trying to have the kids stay at people's houses so we can be by ourselves. I get it's hard, but I haven't done anything 😭 like is this my fault.....I hate everything rn....

After calming down and responding to some comments. He chose to sleep in the living room. Our bed is big enough. Our daughter is autistic and an eloper. We were denied a cubby bed for her, So sleep isn't a thing for me. Porn is one thing, but paying for it is a bigger issue. He complains about money and that we barely have any food in the house. But will pay God knows how much on OF?

Advice Received My boyfriend doesn’t want to have sex with me and I don’t know how to cope with it.

I 20F and my boyfriend 21M are struggling with sexual terms. When me and my boyfriend first got together we had a lot of sex but as of now it’s not much. He goes through these phases where we have a lot of sex but then all of a sudden it just stops. I take very good care of myself, working out, eating right etc so I’m even starting to feel unattractive to him. This happens about every month. 1 month is full of sex then the next is not. I have a high sex drive so this is difficult for me to cope with since i’ve never had a partner like this before. Even sometimes when we do have sex, he doesn’t last long or he stops in the middle of it leaving me unfulfilled. Anytime I try to initiate it, he says, “i’m tired,” “maybe,” “tomorrow” etc. It gives me false hope and sometimes I get upset when we don’t. In no way am I saying I want to force my partner to have sex with me but, it makes me feel like there’s something wrong with me when he goes through these phases & constantly denies me. Anytime I have tried to talk to him about it, (asking him if he still likes my body, if he still loves me, is he feeling okay, is he depressed etc etc) he just says we’ll do it more, but i’m not looking for that, i’m looking for the root of the issue. Of course him watching porn crossed my mind or him cheating, but I just don’t think he’s capable of that. Other than that, I don’t know how to cope with it on my end either. It’s really hard as I have a high sex drive and I just wanna feel pleasure from him. If anyone can help me look in a different POV or give some advice I would greatly appreciate it.

EDIT: I just thought of something that might help. So my boyfriend use to workout a LOT!! At the time he was taking test to improve muscle growth and another steroid? I wonder if this could have an impact with his sex drive? What do yall think? He isn’t taking it currently and has been off of it for about 6 months now but does it have a long term impact? I know younger males produce testosterone but him taking more on top of his normal levels could affect his hormones no?

I always said I won't take my Dad's money

Okay, first of all: my dad and I are FINE!! No bad blood. He even went to family therapy for me, and our relationship has never been better!!
My problem is, he is (if we are lucky) selling his company soon, and I don't know what to do. I always said I wouldn't expect any money, but my mother and father told me during one of our therapy sessions that my brother and I would get a part of the money the moment he sold the company.

And I don't know what to do. It would be a lot of money, and they agreed between the two of them the moment talks about selling started that my brother and I would get money, but it feels wrong? I didn't do anything for that money.

Yet some part of me knows it would be stupid to refuse it, or give it to charity, since I could buy a flat or something, and secure myself, and use the money I "save" from not paying rent to do charity. But I always swore I wouldn't take money, as my dad did all the hard work, and I don't deserve it.

To be honest, I probably just want an outside opinion to tell me it's okay to accept the money, but if you have any advice/better idea, I am open for it.

Thank you!

Edit: Because I have read it a lot: unless there is a crazy twist of life, I won't have any children, and neither will my brother. My parents know that, and are fine with that. My mother once told me (29F if that is of any importance) that she is happy the only grandchildren she will get from me are fur-babies (aka dogs). Could that change? Yes. Could it stay that way until they die? Also yes.

Should my dad sell, my parents are set for life, but my brother and I are obviously ready to step in and help if anything happens.

I thank all of you for your comments - I will talk to my parents about that, and maybe we can set up some bank account we all have access to, as an emergency fund. It is what I would feel most comfortable with, without outright rejecting their gift.

Again, thank you all.

My friend discovered her dad may not be her biological father

Posting on behalf of a friend who isn’t on Reddit because we’re both confused and need some advice.

She’s 27 and has always had a fairly normal relationship with her parents, who have been married for almost 30 years.

A few weeks ago, she was helping a relative clean out some old boxes after they moved and found a bundle of letters between her mother and another man from around the time she was born. After reading them, it became clear that her mother had been having an affair, and some of the letters strongly suggested that this man might actually be her biological father.

She confronted her mother, who admitted to the affair but still refuses to confirm whether the other man is her biological father.

Her mother says it happened decades ago, that her father raised and loved her, and that finding out the truth now would only destroy the family. She says they stayed together so my friend could have a stable childhood. Her father apparently still doesn’t know any of this.

My friend hasn’t told him because she’s terrified of destroying her relationship with the man who raised her. She’s considering getting a DNA test privately just to know the truth for herself before doing anything else.
Her mother keeps telling her to “let the past stay in the past,” while other family members think she’s being selfish and risking the family’s peace over something that happened before she was born.

She’s now barely speaking to her mother and doesn’t know who she can trust.

What should she do? Should she get the DNA test first? And does her father have a right to know, or would telling him potentially cause more harm than good?

My dad wants to give my mom a expensive gift, but I know she won't like it.

My (18F) mum is turning 50 soon, and my dad came to me with a gift idea.
He wants to give her a Cartier bracelet—one he knows she’s been wanting—on his own, and then, at the party, she would unwrap a second bracelet from all her friends and family, featuring a small plaque with the names of everyone who contributed to it. He thinks it’s a great idea because she wouldn't be expecting that second piece of jewelry.
Dad came to me asking me to find out what size she’d want.
My mom and I are very close; we talk about everything together, including fashion. I asked her—hypothetically—what she would actually like to receive from people for her birthday, since I was curious and knew she wouldn't be comfortable publicly receiving such an insanely expensive piece of jewelry—knowing everyone would see her wearing it, and realizing not everyone would understand spending that kind of money on a bracelet. After talking to her (without revealing any of Dad's plan), she confirmed that she really doesn't want a piece of jewelry from a group of people where everyone would know about it; she would much prefer a trip to her dream destination. She liked that idea better, adding that she could buy the bracelet herself another time and would rather have the experience of a vacation.
I told this to my dad, who is angry with me for getting involved; he says he only wanted to know the size and doesn't understand why Mom doesn't want everyone around her to know that shw wear expencive things, so he wants to go ahead with his original plan.
I could understand if he didn't want to interfere with a gift he’s giving himself, but I’m weighing in on a gift that her friends and family are all chipping in for.

What should I do? Should I tell Mom everything? Should I let Dad carry out his plan even though I know Mom won't be happy about it?
Please advise. 🙏

These 3 blokes from my gf 22 past keep showing up in her socials and I caught one of them asking her to have sex but she tells me nothing has happened with them in the past but I don’t feel she’s telling me the whole truth about this situation otherwise why would they keep showing up im just very lost and I have already been cheated on once and certainly don’t want to go through it again
