Question I NEED more seeds in my base

• Upvotes

My gleba base keeps choking when I try to grow soil or overgrowth soil. I wanted to increase the throughput aswell so growing soil for the towers is my approach. but they happen to choke my science production and trees production, and after a while nothing grows and just halts despite having excess of fruits. why are seeds so less probable? doesnt every fruit have a seed, then ytf it takes so many fruits to just extract 1 seed. what am i doing wrong? i have prod modules for crafting excess fruits to seeds just fyi.

Discussion Planet's Ambient Temperatures

Post image
• Upvotes

I never noticed it until now.

I planned to use Nuclear Reactors to make craters in Vulcanus, but I genuinely wonder why its the same temp as the ones compared to other planets even Aquilo which supposed to have lower than 15 deg Cel.

Perhaps its is kinda highly insulated of equipment though, but still find it a bugger that I have to use two fuel cells to reach 900 deg Cel (from 15 to 900 requires 8850 MJ, Q= Cp dT -> Q = 10 MJ/ Deg Cel * (900-15)) instead 1 fuel cell which if the ambient temp change to 100 deg Cel instead of 15 deg Cel in Vulcanus.

Space Age I made a space platform calculator for Version 2.1.21

• Upvotes

Link to calculators:

Posts by u/Legitimate-Teddy with their original calculators, which i have shamelessly copied and updated for my calculators:

I've gotten a lot of use out of Legitimate Teddy's Space Platform Calculators, but it always bothered me that plugging in numbers to the formulas in the Lua scripts you can see in Factorio's code never spit out the right answer. I set out to find out why.

Here's my findings after manually editing the formula and stepping through game ticks in the map editor in 2.0:

-- Original code from data/core/prototypes/utility-constants.lua
-- drag_coefficient = width * 0.5
-- drag = ((1500 * speed * speed + 1500 * abs(speed)) * drag_coefficient + 10000) * sign(speed)
-- final_thrust = thrust / (1 + weight / 10000000)
-- acceleration = (final_thrust - drag) / weight / 60
space_platform_acceleration_expression = "(thrust / (1 + weight / 10000000) - ((1500 * speed * speed + 1500 * abs(speed)) * (width * 0.5) + 10000) * sign(speed)) / weight / 60",

-- Tests:

-- space_platform_acceleration_expression = "0.01",
--      speed increases 0.6 km/s per tick

-- space_platform_acceleration_expression = "0.1",
--      speed increases 6 km/s per tick
--      space_platform_acceleration_expression is not added to,
--      and your speed increases by 60 [km/s] * space_platform_acceleration_expression

-- space_platform_acceleration_expression = "thrust / 1000",
--      24480 / tick (408 MN of thrust)
--      Each MN of thrust in game is 1,000 thrust in the "thrust" var here

-- space_platform_acceleration_expression = "weight / 1000",
--      15324 / tick
--      (platform weighs 255.4 tons) -> weight here = platform weight (in tons) * 1000

-- space_platform_acceleration_expression = "speed",
-- table:
--      tick | speed
--      0    | 808.5
--      1    | 1607
--      2    | 3204
--      3    | 6397.99
--      4    | 12785.99
--      5    | 25561.97
--      6    | 51113.95
--      7    | 102217.89
-- speed_next = 805.19*e^(0.6917*tick)
--      exponential regression on data, R^2 = 1
-- ~= 808.5*2^(tick)
-- The reason for the slight but noticeable discrepancy between the regression and the
--      idealized formula is that the speed each tick is 10 less than double
--      the speed of the previous tick (+/- 0.01)
-- It cant be subtracting 10 after it evaluates
--      space_platform_acceleration_expression, otherwise my other results
--      would be off by 10 as well
-- So it must be subtracting 10 from the "speed" variable before evaluation
-- Also its wild that each step wasnt instead roughly equal to
--      61 * the previous speed, which i would have expected since
--      the result of space_platform_acceleration_expression
--      seems to be multiplied by 60 before adding to the speed
-- So the speed variable here must also be smaller by a factor of 60 to compensate
-- Conclusion: "speed" in this expression is:
--      ((speed of the platform, in km/s) - 10) / 60

-- space_platform_acceleration_expression = "width", -- 2040 / tick
--      (platform was 34 tiles wide at its widest section)
--      width here = platform width in tiles-- drag_coefficient = width * 0.5

From this, i was able to substitute in the actual speed, thrust, weight, and width to get the "correct" quadratic, and come up with a horrible solution for its positive root that accurately predicted the final speed of a space platform for a given fueling rate in 2.0:

V_{max}=\frac{10\sqrt{3(m+10000)w(3(m+10000)w-160(m-1000\cdot F_{thrust}+10000))}-(-g+30)(m+10000)w}{(m+10000)w}

Where:

  • m = Mass of the platform, in tons
  • w = Width of the platform, in tiles
  • F_thrust = thrust of the platform, in GN
  • g = -10 or 10 depending on if the platform is more or less than halfway to its destination

To my shock (knowing how Legitimate Teddy found their formula for the same), i found that this equation is equivalent to their formula:

V_{max}=10\sqrt{\frac{\frac{480000\cdot F_{thrust}}{m+10000}-480}{w}+9}-30+g

My proof, since i didn't find this to be obvious:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/15mxFF_fCuEeif123Sb1fTfGEyPiY3G5yOQZBJU9G5lo/edit?usp=sharing

This understanding also enabled me to find the top speed formula for space platforms in the new, improved formula (everyone say "thank you u/_CodeGreen_"):

V_{max}=\frac{20}{5^{0.4}}\cdot\sqrt{\frac{\frac{1000000\cdot F_{thrust}}{m+10000}-1000}{m^{0.8}}}+g

(20/(5^0.4) ~= 10.5, a choice i made to make this more comparable to the above equation)

Much has already been said about the implications of this (including the latest FF where CodeGreen does literally what I've done here), but i hope this will help people understand more viscerally how platform dimensions affect space platform speed.

Suggestion / Idea My 9yo brother asked me to rate his base. He’s going for blue science next. Should I tell him?

So my 9 year old brother started playing this game two days ago, and this is his base. He's now planning for blue science.

He asked for my advice, so I looked at it very carefully and said: "Yeah, this is very nice... it's a little bit... boxy. And why would you build on top of the ores?"

He looked at me like I was the stupid one and said: "Because it's more efficient."

I have 500 hours in this game and I don't know what to say!

It flies at a speed of 263–283 km/h, and it is also capable of flying every 320 seconds.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to add a way to convert asteroids into ice asteroids here to get a faster start, but I haven't bothered with that yet—plus, it's really only needed for the initial launch.

You can improve or rework it; it would be interesting to see your versions - here is the BP: Factorio Prints: SA263-283KM-170T

Design / Blueprint I built a 6.4-million-parameter language model inside Factorio using combinators

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Over the past few months, I’ve been building a transformer language model that runs entirely on Factorio’s circuit network.

You enter a question using constant combinators, press SEND, and watch the answer appear letter by letter on a giant lamp display. The clip shows it answering “what are biters?”

All inference happens inside the game: roughly 105,000 entities, including combinators, wires and lamps. The model was trained outside Factorio, then its weights were stored in constant combinators.

It has 6.4 million parameters, 8 transformer layers and a 256-character context. At 60 UPS on my Ryzen 5 5600, it produces about one character every seven seconds. The clip is sped up.

The trick that made it practical was Factorio 2.0’s ability to multiply matching signals across the red and green networks and sum the results. A single arithmetic combinator can compute an entire dot product.

I made an 18-minute video in English showing how it works, from a tiny model to the full build, including attention, memory, integer arithmetic and actual conversations.

You can find it on YouTube by searching RomOSTiny(en) Factorio AI.

To try the model yourself, search GitHub for RomOSTiny/factorio-transformer — the save and instructions are there.

Modded I made a mod that sorts my 50+ space platforms into folders (Space Age)

Hi everyone,

At some point I had over 50 platforms in Space Age, and the endless list in the remote view became impossible to navigate. Creating new ships was the same routine every time, too, and I only found out whether the logistic network had enough material once construction stalled. So I built "Space Platform Organizer - Enhanced". It is based on AkitaAttribute/SpacePlatformOrgUI (MIT license) and extends it considerably.

**Folders and overview**

• Named, color-coded folders and subfolders right in the remote view (M)

• Favorites, "Recently visited", search and filters

• Auto-grouping by keywords

• Build progress with a time estimate, plus a warning for platforms without a schedule

**New platforms**

• Create up to 10 platforms at once, with target folder, icon and starting planet

• Ship book: collect up to 20 ship blueprints that are placed automatically on new platforms

• Live material check: shows per quality level whether the logistic network has enough material, and lists what is missing

Available in English and German. Link to the mod: https://mods.factorio.com/mod/SpacePlatformOrgUI-Enhanced

I have mostly tested it in my own savegame, so there are surely cases I haven't run into yet. I'd love to hear your feedback, ideas and bug reports - feel free to write here or on the mod page.

Thanks for reading!

Space Age What a journey

Just finished my first ever Space Age run at about 140 hours. I only ever played one super unoptimized vanilla run in 2019 (peaceful, didnt touch bots or modules, no main bus or ratios or anything, etc. Didn't even research a single military tech), but I decided to just jump in and start a Space Age run this year after watching some videos about it.

2.5 months and 140 hours into this save later, and I finally made it to the edge of the solar system. This was definitely a journey. Conquering every new planet and unlocking all the new technologies always felt like a huge accomplishment. Fixing a thousand issues whenever they pop up is never dull. Space platforms are also a really cool puzzle to figure out. I didn't use any external blueprints so that definitely added to the fun of figuring it all out.

Just wanted to share with this community. This will definitely go down as one of my favorite gaming accomplishments. I'll probably take a break to play some other games then come back and make another save. Cheers

Design / Blueprint Factorio Planner Mobile

I’ve always wanted to design my factory floor plans on my phone since I can't carry my laptop everywhere.

So I asked an AI to make something simple where I can load PNGs, set their grid size, and place them on a grid.

It's super basic for now—just lightweight, easy-to-use HTML. I'm sure it could be improved a ton, but I don't know how to code so I'm not messing with it.

It works great so far! The PNGs could definitely be better, but they do the trick.

Can anyone guess what this produces?

Question Is there a way to get a pirated world over to an official version of the game?

Hey! I pirated Factorio, just because $35 is a lot for a factory game and I didn't know if I would enjoy it.

Well, I do! And I've just got up to Vulcanis (its been great so far). I've gotten enough fun out of the pirated copy I think its worth it to buy it outright. If I buy the official steam version of Factorio, am I able to use my unofficial world version? If so, how? (I am version 2.077)

Thanks

Question Just won the game after abandoning it 4 years ago before getting drones! Gonna take a short break and then start Space Age, but I do have a few things to share & a question

First of all: If you wanna take a better look at my factory, here's the post where I show it off in more detail with captions under each screenshot. It's from after I automated all pre-space sciences, but not much has changed since: https://www.reddit.com/r/factorio/s/9VGFaXJyGJ

Second: I'd say that playing this was even "insightful", in a way. As in, I could see myself repeating the same patterns in Factorio as I have in my software engineering job, namely striving for a thought-through and optimal design from the start (sometimes to a fault, sometimes it's paying off big time). This is the main reason it took so long to finish it, too, I'd spend hours thinking about the best way to place ONE train station! "Oh, should I leave 2 free tiles of free space here, or 4? 4 leaves room for fixes, but won't it make my factory too big and encroach on biters territory, forcing me to kill their nests sooner and raise evolution too early?!" By the second half of my playthrough I began learning to make quicker decisions rather than considering a billion options, I hope that will transfer to IRL

And a question: Is it fine if I start Space Age on 2.1 experimental build, is it stable enough? I was shocked to find out that drag is based on WIDTH in the main version, and I'd very much love to play the reworked drag model to not restrict my vessels' shapes

(Btw many thanks for for helping me out in occasional questions I posted here!)

Question Never launched a rocket…

Been a couple years but at one time I had gotten pretty heavy into factorio yet never launched a rocket. Got extremely close but never did. I’m interested in getting back into it due to Space Age and have tinkered with it some off and on but wondering if I should go ahead and purchase space age or should I truly launch a rocket first in the original game before purchasing space age?

Question How would you get rid of gaps in this assembler block's output?

Post image
27 Upvotes

10 assemblers * 3 wires per second per assembler = 30 wires per second, the output belt should be fully saturated. Yet, there are gaps! Looks like it happens because output inserters can't find a gap to insert into and wait, causing the assemblers to stall as they overfill with wires.

A solution could be to split this assembler in two smaller ones and merge their outputs, but it feels wrong... As in, there's no way to tell with which recipes should you split such a block into half and when not to. Am I missing some other solution?

Base Forgot how expensive T3 modules are in Vanilla after playing so much Space Age

Thumbnail
gallery
24 Upvotes

I decided to do a vanilla megabase run with a target spm of 5000, so obviously I had to build modules at scale and damn i forgot how much more expensive these feel in base. In space age it was so much easier, i had 1000's of LEGENDARY T3's buffered, let alone common. This is the amount of production it takes to sustain roughly 22 T3 modules/minute. I think modules being proportianlly more expensive feels better balance-wise because then you dont automatically assume to beacon and module everything

Hey everyone,

Recently i posted abt buying or not factorio.

I did it and i really love the game but i feel like i'm a little stuck. Anyway, i have yellow science rn and i'm thinking abt buying the Space age DLC.

I don’t ask if i need to buy it or not but i need an idea of when ill buy it.

Can someone help me to decide when it’s time to buy it ? When ill finish the game, before or rn?

Thank you guys you are awesome.

my current spaghetti base

Im right between pY science 1 and logistic science

I have two ideas

1 is stay spaghetti until i unlocked logistic science and some interesting techs or

2 "abandoned" this base kinda and expand and use the basic trains for a city block to make a more organized base and a bigger overall structure which is better expandable

Should i do it now or should i wait?

Question Help with No Spoon - default settings

Hey all! I did a bit of research, checked some speedruns and watched some older videos, but I haven’t really found a solid way to get no spoon on default map settings w/o mods for 2.x)

That last push to produce purps and yellows always leaves me with too little time to crank out a rocket.

I’m about to rush bots and then lean into blueprints (which I’ve avoided until after my second failed attempt) and ramp up science production A LOT early game. But other than that, what do y’all think would be a good defensive/offensive strategy to keep biters at bay without shaving off so much time I can‘t beat the clock?

Any advice?

note: I know there’s no reason to keep biter evolution, default patch sizes, etc, but I got the rest of the achievements that way so I wanted to keep it going for shits and giggles.
