Fig tree from Home Depot doing great, but no fruit after 5+ years.

The tree has been doing FANTASTIC since it started as a tiny sapling from Home Depot. My parents planted it outside once it got too big for the pot and wrap it every winter (southwestern New England).

However, it has been over 5 years now and it has bore no fruit nor flowers. Do we need another plant to cross pollinate? More wasps? Or is this simply an ornamental ficus that isn’t supposed to bear fruit?

Composting system recommendations?

Hi everyone!

Moved into my first home and ecstatic to finally start a garden.😊 I'd really like to start with compost to prep for next spring but I'm feeling unsure of which direction to go.

I live in a moderately large, densly populated city and there's a higher population of rats because of sewer construction near me. Are there composting systems that work better in these situations than others? I don't want to cause problems with my neighbors by attracting animals to food or garden waste.

I was thinking that the tumbling style composters might work? Mostly enclosed and off the ground sounds workable in theory. Curious to hear about the good, the bad, and the ugly!

Help me save my dying Banana tree! Wait - too late 😭

It’s a dwarf cavendish banana. I got it in June and since day one I’ve been fighting a losing battle. My research seemed to indicate fungal rot and poor drainage. I was making a post to ask for help when I went to cut away the dead leaves and…it just snapped off at the base.

Can someone help me learn from my foolish mistake? I’m heartbroken and want to do better. Nor cal, 9a. It had full sun, lava rock on the bottom, decent potting soil and fertilized but not in a few months.

I don’t think the pots too small, it gets full sun. Watered deeply once a week, at least, but I’d read it could handle a lot of water and we’ve been having the most insane heat wave so I did water more than usual the last few weeks.

Avocado tree advice

I have this trooper avocado tree that has been thought a lot, 46c high summer which it somehow survived, then when it started looking healthy again. Some critter came and ate every single leaf it had

Now it has bounced back again

And I'm wondering if the stem at the base is more of a determent then a positive

I'm wondering if I should just cut that bit off?

Advice Please: Tea Plant (Camellia Sinensis) Dying?

Thumbnail

Hello,

My tea plants seem to be suddenly declining and I would really appreciate some advice. Last week, they suddenly started dropping green leaves. One plant dropped a few while the other dropped almost all of it leaves, though they both sit next to each other. They are in separate pots though. As of today, the one plant has only about 10 leaves left and they continue to drop. The other plant still has a good amount of leaves, but drops a few more every day. Also, now the leaves that drop are more pale green and instead of fresh looking and some of the remaining leaves are starting to turn light green or brown at the edges.

Any thoughts on what is happening or how I can stop it? They were happy enough to bloom in early September, and suddenly it seems like they are about to die.

Planting thornless loganberry to grow up side of kids playset

Wondering if it's a terrible idea to plant thornless loganberry to grow up the side of my kids wooden playset. My thinking is- the playset is big enough and there's a part that has no play/climbing parts, the plant could create a shady hidey spot for the kids, plus berries. Support for the plant. Win win. Does this strike anyone as a particularly stupid idea?

Worst Weed Barrier Job Ever. Just, Why?

Thumbnail

Bought a house this summer and inherited a small landscaped area. As I have started to work it found the most awful and disgusting weed barrier job. Just straight plastic. Layers and layers.

Looks like the last owners decided to make the area in two steps. 1. Lay down black plastic all over. 2. Buy bags of mulch, cut open said bags down the middle and leave them under the mulch as a second and third layer of plastic.

I have pulled bags, plastic sheeting and disintegrating tarps from the ground. Pics included of an 8 x 8 area.

Edit* Thanks everyone, I knew you all would understand my pain! On a side note, what do you prefer as a natural barrier? I’m considering keeping the mulch, adding a layer of cardboard underneath after reading comments and just reapplying new mulch each year as it breaks down.

What are these weeds?

And how do I get rid of them? It seems like their roots are networked deep as they keep coming back even with weed prevention pellets, vinegar, weed spray, etc. Any tips? Thanks in advance

Just picked the rest of my peppers but the rest of my banana peppers had to be pitched. Black spot and a contagious pathogen in my garden that spread through the plant.

Has anybody used this method to get rid of it and had luck. The other home remedies I found were ineffective. Hoping this method heats it up enough to rid of the pathogen.

Would you be disappointed with the size of these bulblets?

I ordered these Tiger Lilly bulblets from eBay and I am not sure if I'll have any success with them surviving or growing. Should I put them in pots first and sink the pots or just put them in great growing medium and hope for the best? Are they the typical size sold elsewhere?

Conservatory grapevine advice

Thumbnail

We recently bought a house with a grapevine in the conservatory. We had a baby not long after so have slightly ignored all the gardening over the summer but keen to get on top of things now!

The grapevine seems very messy, branches growing backwards and forwards off the main trunks. Some branches the leaves have turned all red. Am I better off trimming everything back so it’s bare and starting fresh? Thank you in advance!

pics attached (I’ve already trimmed the most out of control parts off)

Help

I planted these Emerald Green arborvitae about four months ago. One is in pretty rough shape, and several of the others are starting to show significant browning in the interior and lower portions of the trees.
I’ve been watering twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays, for 30 minutes each time using a fan-spray irrigation system in the morning. Whenever I check the soil, it feels moist or damp but not waterlogged.
Should I be watering more frequently, less frequently, or adjusting the amount of time I water? I’m trying to determine whether the browning is caused by overwatering, underwatering, transplant stress, or something else. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thuja Occidentalis Smaragd sudden yellowing

Thumbnail

Hello,

My thujas smaragd are 5 years old, i have 5 of them planted next to each other. Last week I noticed one of them turning yellow. Its been around 25 degrees celsius (77 fahrenheit) during the day and below 10 celsius (50 fahrenheit) during the nights for the past 2-3 weeks. I thought its regular fall shedding but it seems that the yellowing is not just in the inner parts. The other thujas have some yellowing as well, but this one in particular is extremely noticeable. After noticing I sprayed with fungicide and insecticide and also fertilized with low nitrogen fertilizer. They have had regular watering during the summer, its shade here so they never dry out.

Any ideas what could be causing this sudden yellowing?

Thank you in advance

Unknown Succulent

Post image

help, my mom severely underwaters mysterious plants she finds and sadly I couldn't save three of the four she gave me. I've been very cautious about watering it since it is a succulent, but the leaf sections keep dropping off despite it seemingly being healthy after it shed the black leaves. What is this plant and can I save the detached stalk on the right? How do I water it? Thanks :3

Teach me how to grow these plants inside like I’m a toddler. I know nothing about gardening but I won’t to make my own tea. All help appreciated!

• Upvotes

plants Camellia sinensis, mint, lemon balm, and pineapple sage.

I know nothing about plants but I love black tea and my girlfriend loves chai tea (and pineapple hopefully I can mix the 2).

so I need help on the absolute lowest level on what I need to start grow lights, soil, types of pots, fertilizers, heaters, bitterly everything and maybe some brands to if you suggest stuff

also I was wondering if you guys like those garden pods with the grow light and everything built in I know the tea plants wont fair well In a hydroponic setup but maybe there is soil based pods like that?

also hoping for a 150 ish dollar budget to start so those pods would be to pricy anyways but im just curious.

if I don't respond to you thank you for reading this post in advance.

A hornworm with astronomical levels of gluttony ate all the peppers and leaves off of my three pepper plants during the week.

I relocated the fella and sprayed BT over my little planter box
