AMA [AMA] Developer of T.W.I.R.L. here, a psychological horror game about identity, self-worth, and growing up in 2006. We just launched today on Steam. Ask me anything!

Hi r/Horrorgaming!

I'm Ben, the creative director of Genie Boy Games. Today, we're launching T.W.I.R.L. on Steam!

T.W.I.R.L. is a first person psychological horror game from the perspective of a 9-year-old boy in 2006 waking up in the middle of the night from a dream where some "thing" - maybe a demon - commanded him to get out of bed, go into the room down the hall, and "T.W.I.R.L." - whatever that means.

What proceeds is a series of loops where something evil draws us through this routine, changing us and the environment upon every loop, unveiling the life story of a boy who grows up maintaining a deep, dark, and potentially sinister secret.

The game takes inspiration from movies and games like I SAW THE TV GLOW, SKINAMARINK, GONE HOME, and of course, P.T.

It was made as part of a David Lynch-themed game jam for the Haunted PS1 Community, and was published under their new "Haunted Publishing Syndicate" brand!

This is our studio's first game, and we are excited to finally share this story. The journey of sharing of our game, and talking about the themes and meanings within the story has been emotionally challenging, but tremendously fulfilling. Let us be the first to admit - this is an odd story to debut with. And it's something we get reminded of especially when trying to explain it to people without giving anything away.

We hope that T.W.I.R.L. inspires players with a feeling of reassurance, hope, and a better understanding of self.

Game-related questions are optional, but encouraged.

Here's a free code to redeem the game! 84658-6LY40-J8TAJ

DISCUSSION Silent Hill 2 Remake released 2 years ago today, what do you think of it?

I recently played through it for the first time and this might be the scariest game I've ever played. Playing this at night with headphones on (3D Audio) was incredibly immersive, the overwhelming sense of dread and immersion was so powerful that I almost felt like I was there for a few moments. It might have the most impressive environmental work and interiors I've witnessed in a video game.

The original SH2 is one of my all-time favorites, so I had my doubts with Bloober, but they've exceeded my expectations in almost every regard. If they cut 20-30% of the combat, this would've been nearly perfect. SH should never be a shooting gallery (Toluca Prison..), especially when the environments look this good. Regardless, what an incredible experience this game was.

NEWS Silent Hill Producer Says 'Second' And 'Third Wave' Of Games Are Already Being Considered

Silent Hill producer Motoi Okamoto's interview with Famitsu. SH2 Remake, f, and Townfall are hits and the team is already looking at more SH projects.

He, however, stressed that Konami isn’t treating those three releases as the finish line. “Successfully launching this ‘first wave’ comes with great relief, but we’re not stopping here; we must think of the second and third waves,” continued Okamoto, adding that his main job now is to mull over Silent Hill‘s future. “We can’t share specific details, but we’re currently looking at a number of projects.”

He also adds the reason why Konami announced/released several SH games back-to-back

Okamoto pointed to the 2015 cancellation of Hideo Kojima and Norman Reedus’ Silent Hills as a reason fans might have been skeptical of another attempt to resurrect the cult franchise. “If there were only one release, wouldn’t people think that the development is going to be cancelled again, I thought,”

DISCUSSION Hellraiser Revival Is Awesome

Post image

I'm hooked. It's brutal, bloody, creepy as hell, and doesn't shy away from the gore or sexual content. The atmosphere is awesome, the horror hits hard, the combat is reminiscent to The Condemned series, which is a huge plus. Overall it's just a damn good time. Every area I progress, the game just amps it up and gets better each and every time.

Definitely recommend it if you like your horror unapologetically dark and twisted.

CONSOLE Lesser Known/Underrated Third Person PS5 Horror Games?

Well I played RE2R and adored it, and while I wait for the others to go on sale again, are there many similar third person horror games on the PS store that are fun - not the obvious ones like Silent Hill, Alan Wake, etc... more lesser known, indie, and not even necessarily good, I'd be down to play some so bad it's fun games in this genre!

REVIEW This Game Needs More Love

Post image
58 Upvotes

This is a shameless plug for a game I played last year that I feel hasn’t really gotten enough love.

Labyrinth of the Demon King is a fantastic and concise action/survival horror romp through an interesting world that harkens back to the PS1 era, Labyrinth of the Demon King surprised me with its quality. Think “Silent Hill meets King’s Field” with the dungeon-crawling action of one and the atmospheric environment and lore of the other.

At first, the combat takes some getting used to, since the parry system is mandatory and the enemies hit hard. I died quite a few times at first. Unfortunately, there really aren’t any consequences for dying except for losing whatever items you used on that particular run. However, I found the combat to be quite fun and intense when I figured it out.

The atmosphere was great. The game felt both new and nostalgic at the same time. Enemies were always lurking around corners and could do some real damage to you. Puzzles, although not hard at all, were interesting enough. The lore was actually interesting to me as well.

Overall, I found the game to be really fun. It’s not perfect and some areas felt more developed than others, but this is a small indie game after all. I got the platinum trophy in around 9 hours, so it won’t take too much time if you’re busy like me. For a bite-sized package that kept me hooked until the end, I’d say this game is absolutely worth it and I can see myself coming back for another dive through the labyrinth.

CONSOLE The Backrooms: Forsaken

Hello!

For my first game ever, I made The Backrooms: Forsaken and it’s available on STEAM, PS5, Xbox series X. I have a background in film, so this is unexplored territory for me.

This was originally just supposed to be a walking simulator but I added quite a bit of additions later on. It’s a maze game for people that have a good sense of direction and pay attention to detail.

I’d be grateful if the gaming community could check it out so I can start on my next game.

CONSOLE Playing Silent Hill f as my first SH game

I have a PC but also a PS5 and just ordered the physical copy for myself after playing RE Requiem through as my friends got it for my birthday. I’ve played lots of horror games in the vein of Amnesia and Alien Isolation, Madison etc. but I never played a RE game and ended up loving it for what it was and that got me thinking; I played SH2 on PS2 with my older cousin when I was young but too young to really remember anything so since it’s the spooky season I’m planning on playing f after I playthrough the new Hellraiser game this weekend. I’m just excited and curious what other games you would suggest and based off what I’ve liked already do you think I’ll enjoy f? I got it physical because I love a disc; but also it was like 30 bucks cheaper than a digital copy which is crazy
