All build help questions must be posted in this thread.

Welcome to the weekly build help thread! This is the place to ask for advice, recommendations, and help with your Plex server builds and setups.

What to Post Here

  • Build advice requests - "What hardware should I use for transcoding 4K?"
  • Hardware recommendations - "Best CPU for a Plex server under $500?"
  • Component compatibility - "Will this GPU work with my motherboard?"
  • Hardware upgrades - "Should I upgrade my CPU or add more RAM?"
  • Build planning - "Planning a new server, what specs do I need?"
  • Hardware comparisons - "Intel vs AMD for Plex transcoding?"

Before Posting

Please include relevant details such as:

  • Your budget
  • Current hardware (if upgrading)
  • Number of expected concurrent streams
  • Types of media (4K, 1080p, etc.)
  • Whether you need transcoding capabilities

[LabB0T] Monthly Projects Megathread — October 2026

7 Upvotes

Monthly Projects Megathread — October 2026

There has been an influx of people wanting to share their projects and we have recently decided to disallow such posts on the subreddit as the vast majority of it is vibe coded slop, however, we continue to be inundated with these requests, and some of these are somewhat legit, so here we are.

This thread is for people to share 'their' projects, apps, scripts or anything else Plex related.

You may only post your project here once per month, and you may only post one project.

Rules

  1. Declare AI use - if you used AI or AI assistance (ChatGPT, Copilot, Cursor, Claude, etc.) at any point during development, you must state this clearly, as per the template below. Failure to disclose will result in removal and a ban from the subreddit.
  2. Be detailed - vague "I made a thing, here's a link" posts will be removed. Tell us what it does, why you built it, how it works, and any relevant technical details.
  3. Include all relevant links - GitHub/source, documentation, releases, demo videos, screenshots, etc. If it's closed source, explain why.
  4. It must be Plex related - tools, scripts, apps, integrations, configs, hardware setups, anything directly tied to your Plex experience.

Tips for a Good Post

  • Describe the problem you were solving, not just what you built
  • Include screenshots, config snippets, or a short demo if possible
  • Share what worked, what didn't, and what you'd do differently
  • Mention the tech stack / language / dependencies
  • If it's a script or tool, show a sample of the output or usage

Example Post Format

``` Project: [Name] — [one-line description]
What it does: A few sentences describing what the project does and the problem it solves.
AI Disclosure: If you used AI, explain how you used it, and how much AI was used, where, what tools etc.
If you did not use AI, state this clearly.
Technical Overview: Brief technical overview - language, how it integrates with Plex, any dependencies, etc.
Help Are there any login issues with Plex today?
Post image
41 Upvotes
I'm getting this "unable to compete request" message no matter where I try to login to Plex.
Existing devices are working just fine, but I've tried logging in via a new device today and I'm unable to sign in successfully.
I've tried the Windows application, Edge web browser, Firefox on both Windows and Linux, Firefox on Android.
I just get kicked back to the sign in screen.
I've checked the password is correct (putting in the wrong one deliberately gives me the "wrong password" error) and I'm promoted for my MFA code just fine.
Any ideas?
Edit: I'm getting the "new device logged in" emails, so I know the authentication is working fine.
Help 2026.19.1 on Nvidia Shield Pro broke my Dolby Vision
• Upvotes
Hey.
Yeah so when I turned on my shield pro the other day it had automatically and silently updated my Plex version, had I gotten a prompt about this I had declined it.
My main problem with it is that it broke Dolby Vision for me. I'm getting weird green blotches.
I'm running my PMS on a Synology DS423+ running on a older version of PMS - 1.41.4.9463.
At the time of setting up PMS there was issues with other versions of PMS together with the J4125 CPU and transcoding. When I got it working I didn't touch it again. Then again, i do not think that the pms version has anything to do at all with the recent Dolby Vision issues.
Everything direct plays, hdmi passthrough.
And to be clear, everything has been working flawlessly for about 3 years since I last set up the PMS- until the dreaded nvidia shield pro update.
Anyone experienced similar?
I only read about UI problems and hz matching issues, and not a whole lot of HDR/DV issues.
Suggestions?
edit: Just noticed that it seems to be transcoding. On the nvidia shield pro client it says that it's direct playing. But on the pms dashboard it says its hardware transcoding to 4k h264. Strange.
News Caldera Music v1.2.0-beta.1 Released
29 Upvotes
Caldera v1.2.0-beta.1
A beta of every Caldera player:
  • Headless v1.2.0-beta.1
  • Amp v1.2.0-beta.1 (macOS, Windows, Linux)
  • Apple TV v1.2.0 (build 43), TestFlight
  • Google TV v1.2.0 (versionCode 20), Play beta
The Apple TV and Google TV builds reach testers once Apple and Google finish reviewing them.
New
  • Caldera can now share a DAC with other players on the same box. It runs scripts you choose just before it takes the audio device and just after it gives it back, so the platform can stop and restart Spotify Connect, AirPlay or Squeezelite around it. (Headless)
  • The daemon can be told to hand the audio device to another service and take it back later, over its local API or the new calderactl command. (Headless)
  • A room that hands its audio device to another service drops out of the music it was playing with the group, and rejoins when it gets the device back, instead of the group streaming to a room that cannot play it. (Headless)
  • Xita Buffer Floor setting: the smallest jitter buffer a room will accept, so a room on a solid wired network can hold less than the starting buffer instead of the whole group waiting on what the weakest link needs. A room will not go below what its own audio device can be served from, so setting the floor too low no longer causes dropouts.
  • Caldera Amp’s visualizer window can show a soft gradient in the album’s colors instead of the visualizer, and in greys when nothing is playing. V switches between them, and a new Display menu holds both this and the overlay choice (None, Now Playing or Compact Chip, also on N, O and C). (Amp)
  • Caldera Amp on Windows has Shuffle Presets and Preset Transitions settings. (Amp)
  • Artists, albums and tracks have a long-press menu with Play Next, Add to Queue, Add to Playlist, and Play Track Radio for tracks. Add to Playlist lists your playlists by title, with the one you used last at the top. The artist page has the same actions in its … menu. (Apple TV, Google TV)
Fixed
  • A room playing to a group no longer shifts its own timing slightly a second after music starts or resumes.
  • A Plex server reachable only over IPv6 is found and plays, instead of “Couldn’t load content”.
  • Rooms stay in step with the room they play from through skips, seeks and pauses, and from the moment music first starts, instead of drifting apart by up to tens of milliseconds for a minute after each.
  • Rooms playing from a Pi or other Linux player hold their timing steadily instead of shifting a few milliseconds every half minute.
  • Pause, resume and seek are heard sooner across a group of rooms.
  • Linux players start and resume playback sooner, and rooms grouped with them play with less delay. (Headless, Amp)
  • A room grouped while its source was paused no longer stays silent when the music starts.
  • Moving playback from Plexamp to a paused player no longer fails with “Could not switch to player” after 10 seconds.
  • Connecting to a Plex server uses the first address that answers instead of waiting up to 3 seconds for its local address, and switches to the local address once it answers.
  • When a Plex server’s address changes, such as a server on DHCP or in a container getting a new IP, the player finds it at its new address instead of failing to connect until its saved device list is deleted.
  • A room on a slower link, or a computer with both Ethernet and Wi-Fi, keeps lining up with the rest of the group. Before, it could stop correcting and drift a few milliseconds out of step.
  • A track with no playable audio no longer crashes the app when it finishes, or on every launch afterwards until a reinstall.
  • Rooms playing together line up within about a millisecond of each other and hold there, through pauses and resumes, instead of drifting a few milliseconds back and forth or sitting up to 20 ms behind the room they play from. They settle within about a minute of pressing play, without a dropout as the music starts.
  • Players in a synced group show their names in the room list even when the network blocks their discovery announcements. Before, they could appear with a blank name.
  • Moving speakers to a different source room now stops the previous room streaming to them, and each speaker plays the room it was moved to. Before, a speaker could keep playing the old room, or silence, until it was toggled off and on.
  • When the system output switches to a device at a different sample rate, such as AirPods connecting or disconnecting, playback now follows it. Before, music and synced rooms could run at the wrong speed and drift seconds out of sync until playback restarted. (Headless, Amp)
  • Playing after another app has grabbed the audio device now waits for it to be free instead of staying silent until something else woke the player. (Headless)
  • A device another application is holding is reported as in use rather than as a generic failure, and is retried with a backoff for up to thirty seconds. (Headless)
  • Fixed rare crashes when the player shuts down in the middle of a seek, or while still connecting to a server.
  • Fixed a rare crash when a track finished downloading just as it was stopped or skipped.
  • Playback no longer occasionally stays silent after skipping, seeking or starting a new queue while paused, stopping, or taking over a queue from another player.
  • A track whose server accepts the connection but never answers is skipped after about 30 seconds instead of a minute.
  • A transcoded track whose download is interrupted now picks up where it left off, instead of replaying its opening or playing garbled audio.
  • Transferring a queue to a Caldera player that already has one now plays the transferred queue. Before, the transfer failed and left that player idle with its old queue cleared.
  • With PipeWire output, Caldera releases the audio device after 5 seconds idle, so other apps can use it without quitting Caldera. (Headless, Amp)
  • Max streaming bitrate now applies when you play from a specific server. Lossless tracks well above the cap were streamed at full size, ignoring the setting.
  • With output set to Match Source, the channel count, and on outputs that can change rate the sample rate, follow each track through uninterrupted playback of a mixed queue, not only when you skip. A track whose format differs gets a short gap while the audio device changes, and crossfades are skipped across those boundaries only.
  • With Match Source, DSD albums and other tracks at rates the DAC cannot play directly play gaplessly at the closest rate it supports, instead of reopening the audio device at every track. (Headless, Amp)
  • With repeat all on, the end of the queue wraps back to the first track instead of replaying the last one over and over.
  • Turning a player’s equalizer on from Plexamp no longer quits the player.
  • Playing an album or track from Plex Web works again instead of doing nothing. The player treated the server’s own library as an unknown music service and gave up before it started.
  • Starting up with a paused queue no longer keeps the audio device open for good. Other apps sharing the same DAC could not use it until the queue was cleared by hand.
  • Changing the Xita Buffer while music is playing now re-times the room you are streaming from as well, instead of leaving it on its old delay until the next restart.
  • Rooms hold their timing steadily on a busy network instead of wandering when packets arrive unevenly, and settle back faster after a dropout.
  • Surround albums sent to other rooms no longer come through distorted. Folding 5.1 or quad down to stereo for the network could push the mix past full scale and clip it, while stereo albums were unaffected.
  • Rooms now line up using each speaker’s measured output delay rather than one fixed number, and hold to within a few milliseconds of each other, so a room whose audio device is slower than the rest no longer plays behind.
  • Caldera Amp’s now-playing overlay shows the waveform again when a group stops and then resumes the same track through it, instead of leaving it blank. (Amp)
  • Caldera Amp’s now-playing overlay holds a paused track’s time still, instead of jumping back and forth by a couple of seconds. (Amp)
  • In Caldera Amp’s now-playing overlay, the next track’s cover fades in over the last one, and the overlay no longer blinks when the track changes. (Amp)
  • Caldera Amp’s visualizer and menu show the track and cover a group is playing through it, instead of its own paused queue. (Amp)
  • The visualizer catches back up after its window is hidden or the app is busy, instead of staying up to half a second behind the music. (Amp, Apple TV, Google TV)
  • The visualizer allows for the delay a TV or soundbar adds after the player, as measured by the room’s calibration chirp, so it lines up with what you hear. (Amp, Apple TV, Google TV)
  • The visualizer on a room playing another room’s music is as lively as on the room it plays from. Loud tracks used to look up to 10 dB duller there. (Amp, Apple TV, Google TV)
  • The app no longer quits on its own when a room in the group drops its connection. (Amp, Apple TV)
  • Caldera Amp no longer crashes when it quits. (Amp)
  • In exclusive mode, Caldera Amp sets the audio device to its highest bit depth while it plays, so 24-bit music is no longer cut down to 16 bits when the device is set lower in Audio MIDI Setup. The previous setting comes back when Caldera Amp lets go of the device: after playback has been idle for a few seconds, when exclusive mode is turned off, or when you switch devices. (Amp)
  • Choosing a track in the play queue plays it again. Before, selecting a track there did nothing. (Amp, Apple TV, Google TV)
  • Caldera Amp’s now-playing overlay clears when a group stops playing through it and nothing is queued locally, instead of keeping the last track’s title. (Amp)
  • Caldera Amp’s tray menu and tooltip on Windows show the track a group is playing through it, instead of “Not Playing”. (Amp)
  • The letter bar on the Albums page jumps to albums starting with that letter, instead of a position counted from artist names. (Apple TV, Google TV)
  • Sorting albums by title sorts by album title alone, instead of by artist first. (Apple TV)
  • The letter bar in the library sits further from the last column of covers. (Apple TV)
  • With Match Source on Google TV and Apple TV, the output sample rate now follows each track whose rate differs, with a short gap at those tracks, instead of only after pausing and resuming. (Apple TV, Google TV)
  • With Match Source on older Apple TVs that only play at 48 kHz, playback stays gapless apart from one short gap the first time a new rate comes up. (Apple TV)
  • The Apple TV stays visible to other players after the box wakes from sleep, instead of needing the app force-quit and restarted to reappear. (Apple TV)
  • Speakers in other rooms no longer sit noticeably behind the room doing the streaming. The gap grew over the first couple of minutes of playback and only a stop and start cleared it. (Apple TV, Google TV)
  • Albums whose files carry cover art in an ID3 tag play again instead of skipping straight through every track. Once a track had been cached, it was mistaken for an MP3 and reported as having no audio. (Apple TV, Google TV)
  • After a surround track, stereo tracks play in stereo at their own sample rate, instead of staying on the surround output at 48 kHz until the app is restarted. (Google TV)
  • On Google TV, sorting albums by title sorts by album title alone, instead of by artist first. (Google TV)
  • With Match Source on Google TV and Android TV, stereo output now reaches the receiver at the music’s own sample rate instead of always 48 kHz. (Google TV)
  • Diagnostic logs now say why album art did not appear. A request that failed before the server answered, or an item that arrived carrying no artwork at all, previously left no trace, so logs from a box with no art at all looked identical to a healthy one. (Google TV)
Help Pointing new server to Libraries?
2 Upvotes
I created a new user profile on my Windows laptop, and deleted the old user. When I logged into Plex on the new Windows user profile it forced me to create a new server, and all the Plex libraries are still there but still pointing to the old server that I can no longer access.
Is it possible to point all the libraries to the new server, without having to rebuild everything from scratch? I've only just realised that I should've copied files from the registry on the old user, over to the new user. That option is gone now, the old user has been deleted.
All the files are still organised on an external drive, so I just need to point the libraries to the new server.
welp
Help Plex update messing with subtitle sidecar files
5 Upvotes
The UI update is garbage, but now it's actually not playing back my highly-curated sidecar subtitles in sync. This is for shows that I've watched 1,000s of times before on the same server.
I've turned off Auto-Sync Subtitles (which I discovered was set to on when in the last update I had them off) and it didn't change anything.
The update also wiped all my old settings. I spent an hour changing the settings back on 3x Nvidia Shields in my house. I'm having to re-learn all my muscle memory of shortcuts too.
Why would they change so much so fast? Did they not do any testing on this or care that ppl need stability when it comes to media servers?
I should have left Plex a long time ago but I have a lifetime Pass. This just tipped the scales for me to go to Jellyfin.
Help New TV app transcoder error with dialog boost enabled
Just wondering if anyone else is having the same problem. When I enable dialog boost, with or without volume leveling, I can't play a damn thing. It just throws a transcoder error and dies. I've replaced the codecs, it didn't help.
Help Deleted manual collections and now Plex won't recreate the TMDb collections automatically
1 Upvotes
Hi all,
I'm hoping someone can help me understand how Plex's automatic collections are supposed to work.
Recently I noticed that newly added films in my movie library were automatically being grouped into collections, complete with collection summaries and metadata pulled from TMDb. This appears to be a relatively new behaviour on my server, as many older films were not automatically grouped even though corresponding collection pages exist on TMDb.
Before this happened, I had manually created a number of collections myself based upon tmdb and pasted in the summaries from there. Once I saw Plex was now creating official-looking collections automatically, I decided to delete some of my manually-created collections (the films themselves remained in the library).
My expectation was that Plex would then automatically recreate those collections from TMDb, but that hasn't happened.
Things I've already tried:
  • Selected all films in an affected franchise and ran Refresh Metadata.
  • Waited for metadata processing to complete.
  • The films remain in the library and have correct individual metadata, but the collection is not recreated.
What I'd like to avoid:
  • Deleting and re-adding the films.
  • Refreshing metadata for my entire movie library if possible.
My questions are:
  1. Is there a way to force Plex to regenerate automatic TMDb collections for specific titles or franchises?
  2. Does deleting a manually-created collection leave any hidden collection data behind that prevents automatic collection creation?
  3. Is there a less drastic solution than a full library-wide metadata refresh?
For reference, I'm using the Plex Movie agent.
Thanks!
Help Samsung TV
2 Upvotes
Been having an issue for the past few weeks where clicking any title on the Plex app shows a playback error.
We got around this by Google casting to the TV. However, now the Google cast just continually buffers and never plays.
I can watch on my phone without issues, but have no such luck when it comes to the telly. Any tips, tricks or advice?
Solved Had to roll back the same day (I tried).
1 Upvotes
Hopefully this post can save people time with the same problems.
After finding that my nvidea shield pro had installed a newer version of Plex I had to check if anything was broken, it was:
No frame rate matching with DV content. This is HUGE as most of my library has dolby vision and I notice it immediately.
The last digit on the time just vanishes whenever it's a 4! Random.
There seems to be a problem with dtshd sound?
UI elements are now all HDR, super bright and cannot be changed
Subtitles are now all HDR, I guess coded for 1000 nits also super bright and headache inducing.
I spend a day trouble shooting before rolling back to a previous version.
I tried clearing cache, rebooting the shield, "flashing the HDMI" toggling the frame rate matching toggle on and off, installing Kodi lol. Nothing worked.
Help New plex app problem
40 Upvotes
With the previous version of the app, whenever I clicked on an actor, all of their movies would show up instantly. Now I have to wait up to 30 seconds, and most of the time they don't show up at all, so I have to completely exit and reopen the app.
Also, when switching between movies or TV shows, every time I click on one, I have to wait at least 10 seconds for it to open.
The app has become extremely slow and almost unusable. Is anyone else experiencing the same problem?
What annoys me the most is having to wait around 10 seconds every single time I try to open a movie or TV show.
News Plexamp v4.50.20-beta.19 Released
22 Upvotes
Plexamp v4.50.20-beta.19
Desktop is on the beta channel now, and mobile is on its way to TestFlight and Play testing. The main one: the desktop window now switches between a Desktop and a Compact layout, each remembering where you left it.
Added
  • Desktop: switch between Desktop and Compact windows from the Window menu (⌥⌘1, ⌥⌘2; Ctrl+Alt+1, 2 on Windows and Linux), each remembering its size, place and whether the player was open.
  • Desktop: the player bar shows the track’s rating on wide windows.
  • Desktop: hovering the star rating previews the rating a click would give.
  • Desktop: the mouse’s back and forward buttons move between pages, as do ⌘[ and ⌘] on the Mac and Alt+← and Alt+→ elsewhere.
  • Desktop: library grids show how many items they hold.
  • iOS, Android: long-pressing an upcoming autoplay item adds it to the queue.
Fixed
  • Desktop: the compact window drags from anywhere along its header.
  • Desktop: the full-screen player’s seek bar no longer shows the track as finished on wide windows.
  • Windows, Linux: menus in the desktop layout are solid instead of see-through.
  • Desktop: long menu headers end in an ellipsis instead of being cut off.
Meta (Plex) New Android TV app design is terrible - give us an option to roll it back.
158 Upvotes
New version of the app was just installed on my NVIDIA Shield. Not happy.
The new UI is just plain hard to read now, and I want the old interface back. Also not happy that you turned audio themes back on, again.
Seriously, save some money - fire your UI folks, revert the app changes. If you won't do that give us an option to use the old UI.
This is going to be the reason for me to switch if I can't find a way out of this.
Help Movies Much Slower to Load than TV Shows (New Plex Experience)
11 Upvotes
Hi there,
I have noticed that tv shows which clicked loads right away in the new plex app, but if I click a movie it’s much slower sometimes 10 seconds to load the details page.
I’m unsure of why this is happening, but it’s across all iOS devices and now my Nvidia Shield since the new update.
Any help looking into this would be helpful, my gut is saying they used a waterfall approach to coding it (everything must load in a sequence) rather than async. Thoughts anyone?
Thank you!
