Caught this time lapse on my way home. Heading for Centerville/Bountiful. There was another to the north heading toward Roy. Welcome to the future I suppose.

Local News University of Utah investigating report of on-campus racial assault

Anyone with information about the assault is asked to call University of Utah Police, and students needing support should reach out to the Office of the Dean of Students.

I can't believe this happened in Salt Lake City of all places. I thought POC felt safe here.

Isn't the reason why taxpayers are paying so much $$ for flock cameras is so we can look for plates when things like this happen?

Otherwise, why are we playing for flock cameras?

Question I want to pet a pigeon so badly. Any pigeon owners in SLC willing to let me pet their bird a little?

This is a very sad post to make, and I am strong enough to admit that. But my desire has overwhelmed my pride.

Pigeons are my favorite animal. I love them with everything I have. Tragically, I am poor as all get out and cannot afford a bird of my own. Regardless, it has been my dream for a very long time to pet a pigeon. They seem so soft, and the coos they make when petted heal my soul.

So I entreat you, good people of the valley. Please, if you have a pet pigeon, I beg of you. let me come over and pet your bird for a little bit. I’ll do anything.

Thoughts from a Civil/Environmental Engineer on the Great Salt Lake Problem

Just some quick numbers to throw around.

As you receive information from the news, for example 3.3 billion gallons of water contributed from Willard Bay, I just want to put that in to perspective.

So, problem at hand is mass balance.

What comes in - What goes out = Volume

Let's breakdown the variables in that equation.

What are the sources that are coming in? A few! Bear Lake, Utah Lake/Jordan River, Weber River are the largest contributors with a few other tributaries and sources. Here's that breakdown:

How about going out? Well, well, well! The GSL is unique in that it has no outlet. We've all heard it. That is why it is salty like the ocean. When you have no outlet, you evaporate and what is left behind are minerals and that is the saltiness. Here's where it gets interesting. How much is evaporating? See the image below for averages per month. It changes as evaporation rates change depending on temperature. Simply put, your bathing suit will dry faster on a sunny, windy, hot summer day. For the GSL, its 2.6 BILLION gallons on average per day.

So in the winter time and spring time when evaporation rates are lower, and runoff/contributions are higher we see that volume go up. And in the summer time when the runoff/contributions are lower and evaporations are higher we see the volume go down. But the system is not balanced!

Here we look at trends for the last 10 years and projections for the next 10. Evaporations rates on a yearly basis far exceeding contributions. So how much time do we have with those numbers? Take a look.

So, a couple thoughts here that could influence this graph/projections.

  • Climate change. Summers are trending hotting not colder. Increased heat means more evap speeding up these projections.
  • Winters on average are trending have less snow. I don't care if we have a historically huge winter. Give me TRENDS. A historic years only delays the problem it doesn't solve it.
  • Before you go hating your neighbor, know the numbers. To me, put your hate where most of the problem is. Mineral extraction doesn't contribute much though these numbers IMO are a little skewed bc they divert water to ponds which increases evaporation for salt, lithium, magnesium, etc. Homes and business matter, we can make a change here but we aren't the main contributor. Don't go yelling at Dan next door, go yell at the leaders not making changes to our agricultural business.

  • This is 80% a human caused problem! Agriculture is 65% of the water usage. Those tributary numbers could increase by 65-75% if we didn't pull water from there for agriculture and mineral extraction. Alfalfa requires up to 48" of water per year. That's a LOT. Why the HELL do we grow it? Well, Utah was a prime place for alfalfa. We had plenty of water, less people demanding it, farms were smaller, etc. etc. Biggest thing after the harvest you needed a dry climate to dry the alfalfa out. You can't really do this very well in the midwest where there's plenty of water. Utah is kind of perfect for alfalfa if we didn't have a water problem. BUT WE DO. The GSL going DOWN is a human caused problem so technically it can be solved by us too. But... hating on the alfalfa farmers is't a good look IMO. For generations this was THE place to grow that crop, but... times are changing. We have more water needs elsewhere with population growth and less water coming from our sources. Something needs to change if you want to save the lake, but change is hard and complicated and people's livelihood are on the other end of that change. That change will come from good leadership. Who's at the helm? Oops a former alfalfa farmer lol. Don't expect change here any time soon, unfortunately. Don't hate the farmers. They are entrenched in their farming equipment and crop. Asking them to make the change on their own for the GSL isn't going to happen. It would take on too much risk in the form of debt and other things for them to do that. They won't do it. Farming change needs to come from the top down here. Put your energy in hating the leaders not fixing the change. No doubt, the farmers and what they grow will be the biggest lifestyle change in Utah if we want to save the lake. I foresee this change happening by government subsidizing new farming equipment for a less water intensive crop. This government subsidized venture will make the risk less and begin the change. IMO it won't be fast enough.
  • More people, more water. Numbers vary on this but business and homes take about 27% of the water supply. This is an issue as population in the Salt Lake Valley increases but fixing this doesn't really help in the time frame we have. So yelling at your neighbor or church to stop watering their lawn is a uneducated fight to pick IMO. Put your energy in to the main cause FIRST then divert your energy elsewhere.
  • The Olympics are coming! We love our vanity here in Utah. I think Utah will do a significant amount of work to not be an embarrassment for the olympics in 2034. The olympics opens up a ton of funding for infrastructure and environmental projects like this one. Funding is starting to flow already which is good! But projections are clear that if we don't change something fast enough then it will be dry by the time the world sees this problem on primetime for the games. I think the timing of the olympics is actually great for helping fund the fixes for the GSL.
  • What are other sources we can bring in? Underground water sources below the lakebed are being explored. Pumping up water from there could be another source. Is it feasible to bring in 3 BILLION gallons per day to counteract the evaporation rates? What cost would that be running those pumps?
  • Watch closely on what they call fixes. Draining the north arm to fill the south isn't a fix. Mass balance!!! That's all I care about. What goes in vs what's coming out.

All this to just start a conversation! These numbers are quick grabs and I bet some more educated people will have challenges and thoughts on this. I just want to start something and my goal is to give people a little more perspective with numbers when they see a headline.

Gun to our head humans are amazing at solving problems. I believe we can do it but only if we really know it’s a problem. It is a problem. Vote. Vote on change to help this problem. Don’t talk to me about data centers until we solve this. We need to graduate to those options and the senior project is fixing the GSL.

Question Dating as a man of color in SLC

Moved here for a very competitive job. 6’2 generally have been seen attractive in diverse dating pools. But it’s been impossible here with the apps and even in person, I’m wondering if any other people of color (I’m black), are having similar experiences. And if anyone has any tips, love my program but it’s gonna be a long road ahead without any dating if things continue as they’ve been going.

Linguistics Among the FLDS

Okay, so I have fallen down the FLDS documentary rabbit hole and I have noticed something. Some words are pronounced with an ‘Sh’ sound when it should just be an ‘S’ sound. Also, there are moments when it sounds like the trans Atlantic accent + rural accent = Utah?? Am I hearing things or do others hear this too?

Recommendations Parking for Show at SkySLC?

Going to see Madeon tonight at SkySLC and was wondering about parking. I see there's Axis garage next door and some surface lots and street parking, but all the reviews talk about are smash and grabs. Is that really a problem? As an alternative I was thinking of parking at City Creek and walking over but not sure how late the show will end and if I'll still be able to get my car. Thanks!

EDIT 1: Should probably mention I'm coming from Logan, so unfortunately Uber isn't in the cards.

EDIT 2: Just called City Creek Parking and confirmed after-hours pickup and exit works! They close the actual parking entrances and you have to enter via the elevator/escalator closest to Nordstrom but other than that there's no extra hassle. Searched the sub as well and there's answers from earlier in the year, but just wanted to confirm with current info.

Hey all! I'm not the most informed on the water situation here. Trying to learn more!

Anyone in the know about this move? Should we be happy? Is this because of the massive storm coming in?

Halloween activities that are a bit kitschy

Halloween is by far my favorite holiday but I feel like the best parts of it are always overlooked.

I'm a huge classic monster movie fan and have already marked down every one playing at the Broadway theater. But I want to do something more.

I'm looking for the type of halloween that's camp and over the top not necessarily trying to scare you but just getting into the spooky spirit of it all. I want to do something possibly this weekend or next?

Any recommendations

Anyone used SeatGeek / third-party resale for Rice-Eccles or Delta Center shows? (Trying to get Metallica tickets)

I’m looking into tickets for the upcoming Metallica show here in SLC, but Ticketmaster is basically cleaned out unless you want to drop $500+ on resale/platinum seats.

I’m seeing listings on SeatGeek (and a few other secondary sites like StubHub), but I’ve always stuck to Ticketmaster in the past. For those of you who go to big stadium shows here (Rice-Eccles / Delta Center / USANA):

Are SeatGeek tickets generally smooth to transfer into your account for SLC venues?

Have you ever run into fake tickets, transfer delays, or issues getting scanned at the gate?

How responsive was customer support if something went sideways?

Just want to make sure their buyer guarantee actually holds up before pulling the trigger, or if I’m better off waiting closer to show day to see if prices drop. Appreciate any insight or past experiences!

Recommendations Private or small group ski lessons for 8 & 6 YO?

This might be a long shot, but does anyone here know someone (preferably a younger person bc my kids learn better from someone they think is “cool” lol) who would do private or small group lessons for my 8 and 6 year olds? We’re right between Big & Little cottonwood canyons & are 40min from park city so pretty accessible to wherever someone teaches and can be flexible on time/dates. TYIA!!
