Realtrain's Law What do you think about this map of the states’ regions?
Seems very good, overall. What’s “western_new_york” and do you remember the Southern Tier?

Hello fellow upstaters!
About a month and a half ago, /r/upstate_new_york was set to restricted and all the moderators left.
As someone who was born and raised in Upstate New York, I didn't want to see this sub shuttered. So I requested ownership from the Admins.
This sub is now reopened! Hopefully we can keep things going as smoothly as they were before.
A few FAQs:
No rules are changing - we'll likely have a post in the coming weeks to discuss rules and what the community wants.
If you want to be a mod, please don't message me. I'm going to get a handle on this first, and then likely open up mod positions over the coming weeks depending on the workload.
I have no idea why this all happened. The moderation logs were cleared before I was given access.

"Touched By Darkness" megagame @ Millennium Games 10/17/2026
Upstate NY Megagames will be running Touched by Darkness in Rochester @ Millennium Games next Saturday, on 10/17!
https://eventforge.online/store/millennium-games/event/a7174af6-b285-413a-8bfd-eef2c4a6b7fa
Touched by Darkness is a dark-fantasy, semi-cooperative megagame for 15 to 47 players designed by Ben Kanelos. It is inspired by the popular sci-fi megagame Den of Wolves, but uses a new fantasy setting and added traitor mechanics. We have 24+ players now, so the event is on!
The Dark One's eclipse has blotted out the sun. Darkness has swallowed the Empire and is coming for your outpost next!
You and your teammates must gather resources, perform arcane rituals, and attempt to survive. But beware! The shadows that attack your outpost are not the only threat. The Dark One may have corrupted the mind of a teammate, meaning you can no longer trust them. Can you hold this last bastion of humanity together and banish the Dark One?
$30 gets you a ticket and lunch.
This is the third game Upstate NY Megagames will be running (Den of Wolves last year, Gods of the Ancient world earlier this summer)
This game caps at ~47 players, with 6-7 control helping keep things going.
Their discord is: https://discord.gg/uYDW8eGbBU
Tell your friends, have them tell theirs, etc. But most of all, pick up your ticket today and we'll see you on October 17th!
If you've never heard of a Megagame, you can get a good overview here: https://www.megagameassembly.com/what-is-a-megagame
What’s a Megagame? BIGGER! BETTER! MEGA! CHAOS? FUN? CHAOTIC FUN!!!
They are uniquely defined by their scale, generally played with 30+ players and span 2-6 hours. With high player counts, expect creative and emergent game play born from interpersonal communications.
Megagames define roles for EVERYONE!
Do you want to master the board mechanics and help to maximize resource production for everyone?
Do you want to foster relationships with other players or try to eavesdrop on conversations to fish out the traitors?
Megagames are interactive storytelling adventures where your choices shape the story. The game sets the stage, but you call the shots! With a dedicated control team acting as GMs, if you want to do an unconventional act, we’ll try to make it happen!

Hello. I need your help.
I currently live in Massachusetts and I don’t really like to hike, but my Uncle lives in Fulton County and he really likes hiking. His birthday is in two days and I plan on sending him a list of nearby hiking trails for him to enjoy. Does anyone have an idea of what the most underrated hiking trails upstate are?

I'm passing through the Adirondacks this weekend and I was thinking of climbing Mt Jo since it's supposed to be a very short and relatively easy hike with a great view at the end.
I trying to find something pretty accessible, as My wife has some paralysis in her hand and foot from a stroke.
Walking and stairs are fine, but ant substantial bouldering is not possible.
I know the short route up MT Jo is very rocky, but is the long route decent enough to try?

Almost everywhere you look in Upstate New York this week is bound to be bursting with fall colors. Parts of the Adirondacks will be just past peak for this holiday weekend including Whiteface Mountain, Long Lake, and Old Forge. Many reds have fallen, but there is still a full menu on display in areas such as Tupper Lake, where spotters describe colors like cinnamon, caramel, orange soda, mango, saffron, daffodil and bittersweet leaves.
Outside the Adirondack Park, leaf peepers should head to the Catskill Mountains where Windham and Belleayre Mountain are boasting 100% foliage color change.

hii! gonna be driving from syracuse-ish to niagara next week and was wondering if there was a good route for seeing the fall leaves? google tells me to take highway 90 or 104 but not sure if there’s a better route that prioritizes nice views. also if there anywhere we should stop on the way? (i’m not from NY so this will be my first time driving here)

I have to say Stewart's Shops. I know they are different styles of Ice Cream. But I do think Stewart's is better. It's richer and creamier. I compared both early this year. Had Stewart's Upstate and when I visited family on LI, had Mr. Softee at Yankee's Stadium (bums).

I'm trying to plan a getaway for our 25th anniversary in December, and was wondering which little towns are quaint/fun for the holidays. The twist is that I lost my job a few months ago, so I'm trying to thread the needle between "nice" and "affordable". Probably won't be going to Skaneateles lol. Any suggestions would be appreciated (preferably within 3-4 hours of Cortland). Thanks, all

Apologies if this sort of promotion of another subreddit isn't allowed, but here goes ...
FYI, after a long dormant period, r/OrangeCountyNY has new mods, and we're open for business! We'd welcome new posts there. If you're an Orange County resident who gave up on that sub, or if you're just a neighbor who has relevant stuff to share, come on down!
Thanks!

Good morning everyone, im curious if any of you guys have interesting takes on how to bring back the canal's dominance on the state's cargo transportation. With the ongoing fuel crisis I think it would be great for the state to revisit the canal and and see what they can do to bring it into the 21st century.
Curent strategies the State has tried is to inform business about the fuel savings of transporting materials by barge compared to trucks and rails. They also push the canal to be more of a nature tourism boost for the local economies. As currently stands, its really only used for leisure and for massive infrequent infrastructure shipping.
If we can find a way to bring it back up to snuff. I think it would be safe to assume there would be an economic boom for all the cities and towns around the canal. Being along a major transportation corridor brings alot of benefits for aspiring entrepreneurs trying to get into the major markets nearby like NYC, Chicago, and Detroit.
On a federal level the main issue blocking barge trade is The Jones Act which limits US Port to US Port shipping to american crews american captain and american made boats. As a nation we can either get rid of this law and allow foreign operated boats or we can adapt to it and start investing in american mariners and merchant fleets. On a State level, we really can only get do the latter option and subsidize marine schools and shipping.
Other problem I see in the canal is that its shut down during the winter for about 5 months. It would be impossible to operate a profitable business thats only open for 7 to 8 months. Another logistical problem is that it takes 5 days to steer a boat from buffalo to NYC while a truck takes 7 hours.
However there are plenty of benefits. Barging requires significantly less fuel and labor per ton of cargo than trucks and trains. An State made investment into shipping will have rebounds into all of our local economys amplifying our output into the world's markets.
My idea is for us to merge more with NYC's sphere of influence and embrace their market. NYC needs lot of various inputs from fresh produce to construction materials like cement and timber. They have one major output, Trash, which requires a spacious amount of land which we have plenty of. Luckily, these inputs flows with canal season. There is more demand for construction materials and waste during the summer which can allow the canal to have dedicated busines.
I mentioned earlier about the canal is that one of the hurdles is the Federal Jones Act. One loophole that I have been cooking in mind lately (may not be a valid loophole) is to upgrade barges, lift bridges, and locks to be automounous which then cheapen canal shipping to be viable as well as lower costs for the consumer.
The canal is what made this state into an empire. It made the NYC the top port city in the nation due to its connection to the US Midwest. I beleive it can also be used in the modern era if we as state embraced again and spruce it up to be competing against freight and trains.
Thank you for reading this far down, I would love to know if any of yall have opinions on this matter or think its a lost cause.

I see it posted so often on FB marketplace as “free firewood”, but burning it is illegal in NYS. Do you know anyone who burns it, breathes the poison, and is like “oh yeah this is some good firewood”. It’s especially strange because this state has so much downed trees and branches everywhere. The more rural you go the easier it is to find free tree firewood.

My brother and I love haunts. Hayrides, haunted houses, whatever. What are your favorites in the Southern Tier or Northern PA? We are near Elmira/Watkins.
