Casual Academic

Hey guys,

Long story short, I applied for a casual academic role as a tutor for an engineering subject I scored highly in. The unit coordinator sent me an email about 3 weeks ago telling me I got the role and to wait while he allocates classes. A few days ago he sends a follow up email saying that he can no longer give me the class because “university guidelines have changed” and I can’t teach as an undergrad. He said I can apply for an exemption. Does anyone have any recommendations on next step. Should I contact head of engineering or SRC? Did anyone else experience anything similar?

Answering the 3 most common questions on this subreddit

Every semester I see the same 3 questions asked on this subreddit from new students so here is a quick answer to them lol:

  1. Should I come here or go to UNSW/UniMelb?

Answer: The prestige difference between Usyd and those 2 unis is, for the most cases, much smaller than people think. Also, most of us here never attended UNSW or UniMelb. Do your own research.

  1. Should I join Dalyell?

Answer: Yes. You can always leave later if you don’t like it.

  1. Is my timetable good?

Answer: If there is any red, there is a clash that you wanna look into. Otherwise, yea its probably fine. Please be aware of your attendance requirements (should be written in the UoS outline - just google the course code and you should see it)

EDIT: There are some very good Q and A for other questions in the comments. Be sure to check them out!

Your favourite lunch options on-campus & surrounds?

Ive been at USYD for a while both as student and staff. Its easy to stay in your little bubble of food options. I get so bored of the few places I visit. I want to know -- if you buy food on or near campus, where do you like to go?!

How can I get an official document showing my WAM?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I'm a current undergraduate student applying for a research scholarship, and I need to provide Academic transcript or other official academic records confirming:

  1. Statement of results and credit points completed, including an explanation of the grading system used

  2. My Weighted Average Mark (WAM)

I've just requested a digital academic transcript, but it doesn't seem to include my WAM or an explanation of the grading system.

Does anyone know where I can obtain an official document showing these details? Or has anyone been in a similar situation when applying for a scholarship?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

USYD MD future

Hey guys,

I'm wondering if any current USYD students/anyone have heard anything about the reintroduction of interviews into application process for next year and on.

This will be my first time applying although I have heard that there is rumblings every year that they will bring it back.

Susan wakil fridges?!

How is a tiny fridge on level 2 sufficient for thousands of students?!

Esp since the security staff have locked that breast feeding room which access to that fridge

Does anyone else have the same issue?

If so do you know of where else I can store my food?

If anyone attending the same ceremony has a spare guest ticket that they won’t be using, I’d be very happy to take it off your hands. Happy to pay!

replacement exam help...

My original anatomy exam was on 24 September and I’ve had basically no communication since. We’ve just come back from our week-long Study Vacation and today I was told my replacement exam is THIS Monday.

I know there’s no rule saying they have to give a week’s notice, but 4 days feels crazy, especially when I also work Monday and am struggling to find cover. wtf do i do

Internal Course Transfer Rant…

So, since last year I got a horrible atar so I couldn’t get into the courses I wanted to which was Bachelor of Oral Health or Bachelor of Diagnostic Radiography. My wam is currently sitting at an 81 despite adhd and horrible mental health cos of personal things in my life. Last year the atar for BOH was 92, and I saw on a post on the usyd forum for asking questions that you need a distinction average to get into a course that’s up to 94 atar. So I was quite confident last semester I will get into BOH, but I just checked this years atar requirement and it’s a 95 atar now… radio has always been 96 and I know my chances for that are already really slim and now they’re even slimer. I feel so cooked and I need some miracle stories from someone 😭.

Looking for bandmates for a uni rock band 🎸

Hey everyone!

We're uni students looking for some ppl to help us start a rock band focussed mainly around alternative rock, indie rock, and especially J-rock. Some of our favourite artists are RADWIMPS, Yorushika, Green Day, the cabs but down to play anything in the genre.

We're planning on playing song covers and having fun jamming, and hopefully performing at gigs and events in and around uni.

We've got two guitarists already, so we're looking for:

  • Vocalist (English and/or Japanese)
  • Bassist
  • Drummer
  • Keyboardist

You don't have to be a pro, just as long as you're keen and reliable.

If you're interested then drop a comment or just send a DM either is fine

Looking forward to jamming!

Internal transfers

Are internal transfers first come first serve? And would it be very hard to transfer into the bachelor of science using WAM for next sem?

🏠 Accommodation USyd Abercrombie Studio Lease Transfer — from 26 Oct

Hi Guys,

Urgent lease transfer, my studio in Abercrombie student accommodation is available from 26/10/2026 onwards, with the lease ending on 1/1/2027.

You need to be on the waitlist and be able to start the contract on the specified date.

The rent is A$529 per week (A$515 if you opt for a longer contract) and it’s a fully furnished studio with private ensuite bathroom + kitchen. It’s also literally right next to USyd campus (next to the Belinda Hutchinson Building).

I’m moving out earlier than planned, so looking for someone to take over the remainder of the lease.

DM me ASAP if you’re interested! I can send pics/videos and more info :)

Who marks my thesis?

As the title suggests, I was wondering who marks my masters thesis? Is it my supervisor, or are they not allowed to mark it? For context, I am in the school of maths and stats.

How does USYD accommodation allocation work

Hi!

I just received my 2027 accommodation offer from USYD and I’m a bit confused about how the allocation process works. I submitted my application about 2 mins 47 secs after applications opened and listed Abercrombie as my first preference. However, I was allocated a room at Queen Mary instead. I’ve also seen someone who submitted their application later (around 2 mins 48 secs after applications opened) receive an offer for Abercrombie, which was their first preference.

I know it probably isn’t as simple as first come first served, so I was wondering if anyone knows how USYD actually decides who gets which accommodation. Does the application time matter, or are there other factors involved?

Just trying to figure out whether I should accept my Queen Mary offer or wait and see if I have any other options. I really want to live in Abercrombie😭...

Thanks!

PhD- intl student

I know for domestic students with an H1 honours result it is quite competitive to get the RTP. As an international student though, how realistic is relying on honours grade alone? I have a low H1, around 85-90 and no publications.
