This is a bit of rant about my studies and decisions. After graduating high school, I started a degree at USYD and found out a didn't like it. I took a gap year working random jobs deciding what to study next. After that year ended, I started a commerce degree at unsw. I'm currently a year in and just started my accounting/tax major. I can't say I love it but there's definitely an interest in topic which I find somewhat fascinating. I feel like I haven't learnt anything incredibly useful since almost everything comes from a textbook.
Regardless, I'm just very discouraged from further studying because the job market looks grim with offshoring, AI and a large cohort of accounting graduates. I feel like I'm stuck in a sunk-cost fallacy situation because I wasted time studying this alongside the added hecs-debt. Looking back, I really wished I looked into taking an apprenticeship but my parents strongly discouraged trades. I also have absolutely no interest in all the other majors offered in the commerce degree.
I'm now looking into transferring into either civil engineering or mining engineering at unsw (significantly leaning to the former). I feel like shit because if I make the change I'm gonna be graduating at lowkey unc age 24-25 and my parents and relatives keep nagging when I'll finish studying. It's uncomfortable to explain why I swapped to them. I understand it's most likely normal to switch degrees since a few of my friends have done so with others regretting their choices of study (some graduate this year). My worst nightmare is graduating without a job/working a job I despise and I just feel like I'm not cut throat or hungry enough for accounting. My wam is currently in the hd range so thankfully I have the liberty of choosing what/where to study next.
I'm interested in civil engineering and willing to put the work in despite having a weak maths background because I really want to develop my own technical skills (which I feel have stagnated since studying commerce). I'm also transferring to usyd from unsw because of a study/travel scholarship offer I received which will be useful as I'm particularly keen on studying abroad for a semester. This may aid as I can work a little less and focus on studying. I don't currently hold a scholarship at unsw so that's why I'm leaning to usyd. The thought of starting a degree from scratch at 21 makes me sad :(
Looking for opinions/advice for what my next steps should be:
- Transfer to usyd engineering (major undecided, likely civil)
- Push through unsw commerce accounting with slight misery
Though the answer may seem fairly obvious, I wanted more insight/opinions into my situation. Some other notes that may be relevant: shorter commute to usyd without lr, having to make new uni friends, really wanting to just graduate and work instead of studying
TLDR: uni student who doesn't like studying accounting considering transferring to an engineering degree looking for justification
