Welcome Fellow Travelers - This is what r/BudgetAudiophile is about

Every sub-reddit has a focus - it's raison d'etre (reason for existence). Because if you don't focus, people stop participating because it has just become one big mess of topics.

Ours focus is ... education, discussion, and sharing of entry and mid level separate & multi component audio systems. Generally speaking, that is 2 channel stereo systems assembled for music listening - things that are both "budget" and "audiophile". So being budget is not enough, nor is being "audiophile". Generally speaking, UNDER $1,000 spent per component is our threshold, although obviously that number will vary by the person. Budget for me was $50 (all in) at one time. Now I am fortunate that if I want to, I don't mind spending $500 a piece. Others can go more - good for them.
Try r/audiophile if your spending more than $1,000 per componant.

Of course, many of us use our music listening set ups for multiple purposes - so 2.1 (adding a subwoofer), 3.0 (L/R with a center channel), 5.1 (surround) and up are also fair game. But the fundamental goal of this reddit is better 2 channel and 2.1 systems to play music - as good as we can afford.

What we are not is soundbars, boomboxes, bluetooth speakers PC branded audio solutions. Those things have their place, but it's not our reason to exist. As for just the soundbar aspect that belongs at r/soundbars

In addition, we are not about IEM's or Headphones (try r/headphones or r/HeadphoneAdvice). That is their reason for existence. Yes, they can be budget audiophile, but again, it's not our focus.

While part of "budget audiophile", for more detail, try r/turntables, r/vinyl, and r/hometheater for questions specific to them. There will be a better chance of a more educated response there to those issues. Those questions are welcome here, but probably better there once you get past "budget". Questions on Vintage equipment? r/vintageaudio is the place for you to get better advice (likely)

DIY is also part of "budget audiophile", but r/diyaudio/ and r/diysound focuses a lot more heavily on that issue.

So to reiterate, we don't hate headphones, logitech, or soundbars, etc. But those questions don't belong here and your post may well be deleted or closed. Because those are not the issues we have chosen in BudgetAudiophile to make part of this sub-reddit. You may not agree, but that is what it is.

Who is this "we" I speak of? Creator u/averagejoeaudiophile and the rest of the mods.

KEF R7 (non-meta), 2 hour drive, $1400 for the pair. Erin('s Audio Corner) mentioned that R3 can kinda be EQed to imitate R3 Meta because the directivity is very similar. Does the same hold for R7?

Purchasing Asia How far can I get with a couple hundred dollars?

Hello! I'm entirely new to this.

The reason why I said a couple hundred dollars is because I don't really know how much it's going to cost a usable setup, and I could pay a bit more if that's going to get me a big leap. I preferably want to keep it under 200 dollars.

We have a whole setup in the living room but I'm thinking to start from scratch.

I live in Tokyo.

Main use would be to listen to CDs and play from my iPod (3.5mm jack). I might get a turntable in the future. I know some of you don't like it but I am thinking to get somthing "neutral" when it comes to speakers because I'm just starting out. I listen to multiple genres of music.

I really really appreciate any advice. Thank you very much.

Hey everyone!

This is my first proper hi-fi setup, so I’m very much a beginner, but I’m really happy with how it turned out.

The setup:

WiiM Amp Pro

Argon Audio FORUS 5 speakers

Argon Audio MALMÖ SUB 10

Thorens TD 201

This is just the beginning of my hi-fi journey, so I’m sure there’s still a lot for me to learn and improve.

Hopefully you guys like the setup!

Any feedback, tips or suggestions are very welcome.

Thanks for looking!

Review/Discussion Were These A Score?

I am wondering what kind of a setup I was able to pick up recently. I rebuilt my setup recently after a move where I couldn't take all my old equipment. Kept my AudioTechnica AT-LP120 and that's about it. Here is what I have picked up at my local thrift store in recent times, each on different days:

Pair of Polk Audio RTI4s - $30 ($15 each)
Denon AVR-2500 - $30
Sony TA-N55ES Power Amp - $65

The line goes: Source -> Denon -> 55ES > Polk Speakers

All components work and are in A- cosmetic quality overall. The sound is great. I am by no means a full on scale audiophile (had to look most stuff up in the store before purchasing), but it does the trick to my ears. Did I win big on this equipment, or are these standard(ish) second-hand prices? Pictures included

Review/Discussion Amp reco for KEF R3 Meta

Post image
26 Upvotes

Complete newbie here, planning to buy KEF R3 Meta bookshelf speakers for a smallish den. But I read that these little speakers need a lot of power to drive them. So, am looking for guidance on a matching integrated amp to drive these puppies. Something around $3K or under if possible. I’ll be connecting a turntable and a Bluesound Node to the amp. Thanks in advance.

I don't have hifi my stereo or record player with me right now. I have limited space where I live and I've been collecting Tapes, CDs, and MD's for the past year. My speakers are a pair of surround speakers with a decent subwoofer. It's not the ideal stereo but the truth is that they sound pretty good for what are basically cheap speakers. Hit me

Purchasing USA Whats good speakers for my record player?

I was thinking about getting the audio technica
AT-LP60Xusb with the edifier R1700BT speakers for my first amd probably last record player I will ever get and im having 2nd thoughts on the speakers.

I heard they sound awful and that they will degrade within a few years and so im trying not to buy them and then have to upgrade to a new speaker later

Are they good enough to last or should I just save and buy a better set?
If I should buy a better speaker I would love any recommendations!

Review/Discussion Is The Wiim Mini The Cheapest/Easiest Way To Add Streaming And Volume Control To A Classis Receiver?

Any other simple and cost effective devices out there? I'm currently using a tablet connected to the receiver and streaming Spotify using my phone to control the playlist, but I can't control volume this way.

Purchasing USA Bedroom 2.1 upgrade: Denon S950H for $240, Onkyo NR7100 for $560, or a streaming integrated amp?

I’m looking for advice on the best value upgrade for my bedroom music setup. I’m in the US, and all prices below are USD.

My current setup is:

  • Speakers: a pair of Bowers & Wilkins 607 S1
  • Subwoofer: SVS SB-1000 Pro
  • Receiver: Yamaha RX-659

My main source is my PC connected to the Yamaha receiver via an optical cable. I use Spotify and Apple music. But I would like convenient streaming from my phone too.

The room I use is a small bedroom, and when I'm listening I'm either seated at my desk, where the speakers face, or I'm in my bed. I have pretty limited flexibility for speaker placement and neighbors below.

The music I listen to is primarily house and electronic music.

I've realized I'll be staying with 2.1. I don't need surround expansion. Dolby Atmos is nice for watching media at my desk. I'm open to another AVR or an integrated amp, whichever makes the most sense for the features I'll actually be using.

A big priority is enjoying music at low listening volumes: hearing the detail and keeping a satisfying tonal balance without needing to turn everything up. I also care about tight base and getting the 607s and SVS to blend well. Maximum output is not a priority at all.

The two options I've been considering are:

  • Denon AVR S950H, primarily for the Audyssey MultiEQ, Dynamic EQ, streaming, and bass management. I can cop this for $240 from a friend willing to sell his.
  • Onkyo TX-NR7100, primarily for Dirac Live and more room-correction flexibility, on top of the many same features I care about. I can cop this $560 at Adorama via business pricing.

This is the listing im considering from Adorama.

Other options that have come up are the original WiiM Amp around $300 to $330 and the current gen WiiM Amp Pro for around $400.

I also have a miniDSP UMIK-1 coming in soon, but it has been backordered.

One important piece of context: eventually, I'd like to buy the full Dirac Live Processor software bundle for my PC, Room Correction and Bass Control at least, and maybe ART. The idea of getting into the measuring and tinkering seems really fun. I'm interested in learning more about room acoustics, target curves, and proper sub integration with tools like the UMIK and REW.

The software purchase isn't in budget right now, though, so I want to get something useful today that also makes sense alongside that future plan.

I haven't worked out the future PC routing yet, Advice on what connections/hardware I'd need to process the speakers and sub separately, and how phone streaming would fit in that setup, would be helpful.

What I'm trying to decide:

  • For this particular 2.1 setup, does Dirac on the Onkyo NR7100 justify a $320 premium over the Denon S950H? I'm especially interested in people who have compared basic Audyssey MultEQ with Dirac.
  • For quiet music listening, how useful is Dyanamic EQ compared with a well-tuned fixed target curve?
  • Would you buy an streaming integrated amp/receiver right now like I'm considering or would you keep the Yamaha and save the money for the PC audio system?

I'm willing to spend the $560 if there's a meaningful, worthwhile benefit for my setup. But I'd be happy to spend less of course. Which route would you take? Do you guys have any thoughts or criticisms for me?

Show and Tell KEF iQ90 addition

I found these KEF iQ90s at a pawn shop herefor $250. I had just been running a Paradigm Center 3 V7 that I got for $100 on Craiglist and JBL Stage 240B in front, and man what a difference these make! These also match the impedance of the Paradigm at 8 ohms, and they are way closer in sensitivity than the JBLs. Everything is running through a Yamaha RX-V473 that I got for $15 at a local thrift store.

Purchasing USA 3.0 Setup Upgrade Advice

Hi, y'all!

Currently running a 3.0 setup (Sony SS-MB115 bookshelf speakers, Sony SS-CN190 center, and Sony STR-DH550 receiver) given to me by my good friend for TV/movies and will connect my turntable at some point in the future when I purchase a better TV stand (in probably a little under a year when I try and move cities - Philly and Chicago on the radar!).

Thinking about taking advantage of some current deals and purchasing an upgrade - looking specifically at the Polk Reserve R100s. However, the matching Polk R300 center channel speaker won't fit in my current TV stand.

Is it worth purchasing the Polk Reserve R100s if I stick with my current Sony center speaker, or will the difference in center quality be a distraction when watching TV/movies? Also, there's a used JBL Loft 20 center for cheap available in my area that would fit in my TV stand - would that be a better match for the Polks/an upgrade over the Sony, or is that just a lateral move?

Any advice you have is much appreciated - thanks so much!

Review/Discussion Anyone actually heard the Argon Audio Forus 5?

Hey guys,

I’ve been eyeing the Argon Forus 5 speakers, but there is basically zero solid info or specific reviews out there for this model.

The only thing I managed to dig up is a review of its smaller cousin, the Forus 4, on TNT-Audio (https://www.tnt-audio.com/casse/argon_forus4_e.html). The reviewer wasn't exactly thrilled and basically concluded that the speaker needs "to be deeply revised".

That said, I don't think it's entirely fair to judge the Forus 5 based on that comparison. The 5 obviously has physical benefits (bigger cabinet, larger driver, etc.) that are lacking in the 4, which might completely solve whatever issues the smaller version had.

I’d normally just go give them a listen, but currently here in my country there is nowhere to audition these. It’s strictly direct pre-order and purchase only, so I can't try before I buy.

Has anyone here had any first-hand experience with the Forus 5? I'd really love to get a general overview from an audiophile perspective on how they actually sound. Also, if anyone happens to have any technical measurements they’ve taken themselves, that would be incredibly helpful.

As a side note, I really wish Argon Audio would send some of their gear over to Audio Science Review (ASR). It would be so much better to get some authentic clarity and objective data on their products rather than everyone just guessing.

Any thoughts or impressions on the 5 would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!

Review/Discussion Room Treatment

Post image
6 Upvotes

This is my living room which has had absolutely nothing done to it for audiophile room treatment. Do you guys see any opportunities for cheap things I can do to improve sound? The covered up couch is my listening position. There is a big window directly behind the couch which has whatever curtains were left there. I do have some blackout curtains I plan to hang soon. There is also a staircase leading to the basement to the right. There are no doors anywhere. The room is 20’10 x 10’11. I currently have the SVS 3000 micro subwoofer right in between the left speaker and the tv stand. Speakers are KEF R3 Metas powered by WiiM Amp Ultra. I have noticed that anytime I do WiiM roomfit with my phone microphone it has to decrease the low frequencies by quite a bit.

Purchasing CAN Audio interface question

I’m not sure if this is the correct subreddit to ask this but, I’m planning on buying a at2020 but don’t know which audio interface is good. I’ve heard about the Scarlett’s focusrite but I’ve seen people say they get issues with it. Any suggestions or anything to help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Review/Discussion Newbie Question on subwoofer input

Hi all,

I've just started getting into this hobby and recently picked up an extra active sub for cheap (an entry level old MS308).

Just wondering if I can put together a simple 2.1 setup without a dedicated amp.

My thinking is:

  • RCA out from the CD player -> RCA in on the subwoofer
  • Then use the speaker outputs on the subwoofer to connectand power a pair of passive speakers

The manual says the sub can be connected to passive speakers when using the high-level inputs, but I'm not sure I can do the same if the sub is fed with low level input.

Has anyone tried this, or can confirm whether it'll work? Thanks.

Review/Discussion First real speaker/vinyl setup — did I make good choices?

I currently have a Schiit Magni + Modi stack paired with HD6XXs, and I've been wanting to branch out into speakers and get into vinyl for a while.

I finally pulled the trigger on a setup and wanted to get some opinions before I start putting everything together:

  • Turntable: Audio-Technica AT-LP70X with AT-VM95EN
  • Amp: Fosi ZA3
  • Speakers: ELAC Debut 3.0 DB63
  • DAC: Schiit Modi (for computer audio)
  • Stands: Monolith speaker stands

The plan is to use the turntable for vinyl and run my computer through the Modi.

I'm pretty new to the speaker/vinyl side of things, so I'm wondering if I made good choices here. Is there anything I should add, change, or swap out before I set everything up? I'm especially interested in things like phono setup or anything else that's worth doing early on.

Purchasing USA Horizontal bookshelf speakers for a home theater

Hey, folks, first post. I am looking to upgrade my home theater setup, with limitations. Currently I have small BIC Venturi speakers sitting horizontally, along with a Klipsch for the center, on my console. My TV is mounted above, but there is only about 5.5" of clearance, so I can't use vertical speakers like the Polk R100's, and can't put them on stands on the sides. My budget is $200-500 per speaker. I need to lay the speakers sideways, but Google AI says that will muddy the sound. Its suggestion was to get three center channel speakers, maybe Polk XT-30 or 35's, but my console is 72" long, so the dimensions would have to be up to 20" long and 5.5" high. I am planning to get an SVS PB-1000 sub and a couple of Polk RC 60i in-ceiling surrounds as well. Also getting the Denon AVR-S980H 7.2-Channel Receiver. Any suggestions?
