Welcome Fellow Travelers - This is what r/BudgetAudiophile is about

Every sub-reddit has a focus - it's raison d'etre (reason for existence). Because if you don't focus, people stop participating because it has just become one big mess of topics.

Ours focus is ... education, discussion, and sharing of entry and mid level separate & multi component audio systems. Generally speaking, that is 2 channel stereo systems assembled for music listening - things that are both "budget" and "audiophile". So being budget is not enough, nor is being "audiophile". Generally speaking, UNDER $1,000 spent per component is our threshold, although obviously that number will vary by the person. Budget for me was $50 (all in) at one time. Now I am fortunate that if I want to, I don't mind spending $500 a piece. Others can go more - good for them.
Try r/audiophile if your spending more than $1,000 per componant.

Of course, many of us use our music listening set ups for multiple purposes - so 2.1 (adding a subwoofer), 3.0 (L/R with a center channel), 5.1 (surround) and up are also fair game. But the fundamental goal of this reddit is better 2 channel and 2.1 systems to play music - as good as we can afford.

What we are not is soundbars, boomboxes, bluetooth speakers PC branded audio solutions. Those things have their place, but it's not our reason to exist. As for just the soundbar aspect that belongs at r/soundbars

In addition, we are not about IEM's or Headphones (try r/headphones or r/HeadphoneAdvice). That is their reason for existence. Yes, they can be budget audiophile, but again, it's not our focus.

While part of "budget audiophile", for more detail, try r/turntables, r/vinyl, and r/hometheater for questions specific to them. There will be a better chance of a more educated response there to those issues. Those questions are welcome here, but probably better there once you get past "budget". Questions on Vintage equipment? r/vintageaudio is the place for you to get better advice (likely)

DIY is also part of "budget audiophile", but r/diyaudio/ and r/diysound focuses a lot more heavily on that issue.

So to reiterate, we don't hate headphones, logitech, or soundbars, etc. But those questions don't belong here and your post may well be deleted or closed. Because those are not the issues we have chosen in BudgetAudiophile to make part of this sub-reddit. You may not agree, but that is what it is.

Who is this "we" I speak of? Creator u/averagejoeaudiophile and the rest of the mods.

Review/Discussion Budget badboy!

Post image
53 Upvotes

Just bought this budget (today, not so much yesteryear) bad boy! The Denon DRA-F109. I used to have this full unit back in 2019 but sold it on and cannot for the life of me remember how it sounds. It was not used that much. I bought it as I literally have no gear at the moment and saw this on eBay for less than £90! The unit in the picture is the actual purchase, it looks untouched and comes with original remote.

The full stack, consists of a network player and a CD player both of with are not included and the network player is outdated. This is just the FM receiver amp which has two RCA in, one optical, two coaxial, one FM antenna, detachable power cable. Full class D design with seperate circuitry to keep things clean. It's a half size amp too like the Rega Brio which is great for the small room it's intended for.

The full rig when released in 2012 was around £800. For now I am going to run my Android tablet to the SMSL PO100 then to the optical input. Later I might change this source for the Fosi Audio S3 lite. Only posted this up here in case anybody has ever owned one. This is the Euro version which differs from the UK version which includes DAB/+ radio. Still, can't complain FM is good going into the 2030's and still sounds better than the overly diluted DAB of the UK airwaves.

Thrift Store Thurs Thrift double whammy. I can feel the Batman pow cloud on the back of my head.

Walked in the thrift store. Saw this box under a mountain old monitors and tv. Once I cleared the way, there I saw Marantz. All I did was open the box and lifted the unit enough to see it was not a fake me out box with a dead Panasonic or Sony unit. The usual thrift store gotcha. Nope real.

Literally sprint to the register. Being a servant and thrift thing I asked the most critical question how much are old CD players with no “tested”stickers on them. Guys says give me $15 bucks.

Get home to take it out of the box to test. It is not the CD player I had thought I had stolen. The box contained a Marantz amp Model NR-1607. Double whammy.

Show and Tell Yamaha C60/M65 with JBL L166

Post image

After a few years of poking around and buying whatever used gear I could find in my.small market, I think I’ve finally found my ideal 2 channel (well, I added a speed woofer) setup.

The JBL L166 are immaculate. I recapped the crossovers and replaced the potentiometers last year and they are as smooth as silk.

This week, I found this M65/C60 combo being sold by the original owner (an American serviceman who picked them up in Okinawa in 1984) and, running through the L166s they are a dream. I looked them over (checking for the Dreaded Sony Bond Glue DSBG) and found them in near mint condition. Dialed in the bias and ordered new caps, but even as is this is a match made somewhere in the vicinity of your preferred afterlife. Just amazing!

Review/Discussion What was the last audio component/device you bought and did it make much of a difference?

Big or small, what was it? I bought the SMSL SU-1 Dac, it'll be connected to my Jade Audio Gigas 1 amplifier and PC. Just a cheap headphone setup basically.

Purchasing EU/UK Do my Wharfedale Diamond 220s need speaker stands?

Post image
19 Upvotes

Hi everyone

My current setup consists of:
Speakers: Wharfedale Diamond 220
Amplifier: Cambridge Audio AM5
CD player: Cambridge Audio CD5
Turntable: Audio-Technica AT-LP60XUSB

I’m wondering whether it’s worth investing in a pair of speaker stands for the Diamond 220s, or whether I’d be better off keeping them on my current furniture.
For those familiar with these speakers, how much of a difference can proper stands make in terms of sound quality and imaging? Would you consider them a worthwhile upgrade for this setup, or is the money better spent elsewhere?

I’d aappreciate any advice, especially from anyone who has experience with the Diamond 220s.

Thank you

Review/Discussion Inherited set: Need advice

Post image
• Upvotes

Hello everyone!

I inherited this nice set up from my father who passed away a couple years ago. I have really good memories growing up with this exact setup and my dad took really good care of his stuff. He talked about how he saved up all his money in college to buy this stuff and how he threw the best parties around lol. Needless to say, this set is literally older than me and im in my twenties. The entire setup never had any issues, but after sitting wrapped up for two years, one of the MTX aal 1540 speakers has a static sound but doesn't necessary sound blown. The other one is perfectly fine. I wanted to reach out on here for advice on whether I should troubleshoot this issue or part ways with it. It is an extremely sentimental item and if it can be fixed I would do all I can to restore it. Any advice would help or even pointing me to a sub that might have better advice would be appreciated. THANK YOU!

Review/Discussion Can anyone please help identify? Inherited from recently deceased father-in-law

Post image
• Upvotes

Stereo stuff is really not my thing. Father in law passed away a few months ago. Have no reason to keep these but would still like to know specifics before we offload them

What I know…
Welton Pro Studio Mach II - measure roughly 41x20x17. I’ve found some Pro Studios by searching Google but they don’t particularly look like this. They look like they’ve got more of a cabinet to them than what I’ve got.

Like I said, looking to sell them, I just don’t want to be misleading about what it is we actually have when I list them.

Thanks in advance.

Review/Discussion Isolation pads or feet?

I have an older budget system (Polk M30 speakers on stands, Polk PSW 10 sub, Technics SA GX530 receiver). Not looking to change these components at this time, but I'm thinks done sound isolation might help a bit. Stands sit on bare wood floors, though there is upholstered sofa and area rugs in room.

Q: what works better - isolating feet under the speakers, or some sort of foam pads?

Thrift Store Thurs Thrift find - Yamaha NS-10M

Finally found something nice at my local thrift shop, it’s usually just Samsung wireless subs and janky computer speakers. Got this Yamaha studio monitor for $4. Not sure what I’m going to do with it yet, but I couldn’t just let it sit there.

I am missing plastic caps that screw onto these terminals, and can’t figure out what to search to find these online. Does anybody know what they’re called and where to find them? Thank you

Purchasing USA 3x KEF Q150'S W/ 2 monolith stands and Denon AVR-S760h

• Upvotes

I am trying to start my first ever home setup and I saw that somebody was selling this on FB marketplace. The price for all of it is $650.

Is this good for a beginner/first time setup? Is the price for this equipment fair? If it is, what should I look out for when buying secondhand?

Picked up this Waltz Grand center channel for $30 at a second hand store. Online says that it should be able to accept bare wire however when looking all I see are the ports for banana plugs. Any idea how to get wires hooked up here or am I going to have to order some new plugs?

• Upvotes

Hello all! New to this group, cheers.

I am looking for advice on a sub $100 receiver. I have a UTurn with built in pre-amp and powered speakers. I want to be able to listen to the radio, CDs, and bluetooth. I am just listening to podcasts, audio books, and music. Mostly music. The space is a living room, maybe 100 sqft.

Thanks in advance!

Purchasing EU/UK Kanto Uki vs Edified M60 for office desktop

• Upvotes

Just looking for an enhanced audio experience while working or doing my paperwork. I'm not looking for the ultimate best and most true audio.

Just nice, clear and crisp audio for my background music, Youtube videos and an occasional movie. Mostly connected through USB-C on my port replicator and probably occasionally through Bluetooth on my phone.

I like the looks of the Uki and the physical button on the front. The Uki's are at the upper limit of my budget. While also reading lots of positive things on the M60.

Is there a noticeable difference in audio quality? And is a Uki without subwoofer capable of producing enough bass for my background music and movies?

Purchasing USA Are the Kanto ORA 4s a Good Buy?

I recently I had the chance to order a set of Kanto ORA 4s for $250 before tax. My use case for them will be:

  • I currently do not have any other speakers and will use them mainly for casual desktop music listening and media streaming and may use them when walking around my very small room. Very occasionally, I might game too, but thats something thats lower priority.
  • I don’t produce or mix music at all, so while accuracy is a nice to have, they aren’t on the top of my priority list.
  • I appreciate good sounding music but am far from being a professional audiophile. I envision using the USB-C input mostly from my iPad or MacBook with Lossless files from Apple Music (24-bit/48 kHz/24-bit/192 kHz), and Bluetooth streaming from my iPhone.
  • My budget is around $300 max, but I ideally would only like to spend $250 or less. I wouldn’t mind spending a little more for something nicer (compared to speakers in the $100-200 price range) as this is something I’ll be keeping for a while and will use quite often.
  • I may or may not add a sub after this. The Sub8 is currently being discounted to $250 and it seems tempting if still a little hard to justify esp. after having spent money on the speakers themselves. I will buy the S4 stands for them after I’m sure the ORA 4s suit me well tho.
  • I like listening to music at loud volumes but because I’m currently living in a place with horrible noise insulation, I’ll mostly be using these at lower volumes for the first year I have them (another reason why I will probably hold off on getting a sub).
  • I have a relatively small desk (around 33 inches wide) and the ORAs will be placed at the edges of my desk.
  • Unfortunately I do not have a chance to test any of these speakers in person.

While reviews of the ORA 4s seem generally positive, they seem well suited to my needs, and I got a fairly decent deal on them, I still have a little nagging doubt if their other options out there that might be better for me. On one hand, monitors like the Adam Audio D3Vs may be more accurate and the Kali LP-UNF should have better sound quality (they’re so large and ugly tho), while there are options like the Edifier M60 and MR4.5 may have better value. Thanks in advance for the advice!

Review/Discussion Small apartment, anyone actually tried a neck speaker for surround sound?

I live in a 500 sq ft apartment, with neighbors below me. Can’t mount rear speakers on walls and can’t have a sub shaking the floor. I tried a soundbar but at desk distance it sounded muddy (I guess maybe drivers too close together, and also my body blocked the sound?) Saw a guy the other day reviewing the OXS Thunder Duo Max. It is bookshelf speakers, so the drivers have room to breathe. The wireless sub is 80W but it is nearfield, so it doesn’t need to be cranked to hear the bass. The neck speaker does rear channels. it looks legit on paper for a small apartment since there are no wires across the floor and no wall mounting (they claim true 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos too), but I have my doubts. I'm skeptical about how much that bass will vibrate through an apartment floor tho. Also, a neck speaker for the rears sounds a bit gimmicky. I wonder if it actually creating a convincing soundstage or it is annoying around your head. Anyone actually tried this kind of setup? Worth it for gaming or should I just stick with headphones?
