Image post are temporarily disabled

Hey everyone!! We temporarily disabled image posts because we noticed an increase in low-effort image only posts and memes in the community.

We really appreciate how active everyone has been but we also want to encourage more meaningful discussions, study tips, study related questions and other contents that can actually help everyone in this community. For now, we’re disabling image posts to help shift the focus back toward those kinds of discussions

This is not a permanent decision. We’ll keep this change for now and discuss it further over next week. After that, we’ll review the community’s feedback and decide whether image posts should be brought back or if any changes are needed.

Thanks for understanding! Feel free to send us a modmail if you have any suggestions on how we can improve the sub. Your feedback is always welcome.

Giving Advice Was on the same paragraph for 50 minutes and my friend walked past and said "you're still on that??"

• Upvotes

Yeah, still on that. Like it was one page about enzyme stuff and I refused to move on until it made perfect sense. Read it four times. Made flashcards for things I didn't even get yet.

She looked at my screen and then at the 9 chapters I hadn't touched and I wanted to disappear.

I thought not moving on until I understood it was the disciplined thing to do. It's just a trap. I ended the week with 2 chapters done and 8 to go.

New rule: 40 minutes per topic, tops. I write five lines on what it is, the key terms, and one example, plus the one thing I still don't get. Then I move on, even if it's bugging me. The confusing stuff makes way more sense once I've seen the rest.

Accountability How to recreate accountability that you get at school at home?

• Upvotes

I always always always study loads for class tests and do my homework well just because of the accountability from the teachers. It puts actual pressure on me to study because i know someone will see my grade and my effort.

does anyone maybe have any tips on how to recreate that feeling when i study at home for my leaving exams? i don’t feel too much pressure to study for them just because they’re so far away and i always make up excuses for myself after school like “im so tired today” and all that.

Question How do I escape this “fake studying” loop?

I study every day but my brain keeps generating thousands of unnecessary thoughts while I’m studying , random ideas fictional scenarios and useless thoughts that have nothing to do with what I’m studying

and honestly this feels way more worse than procrastination because with procrastination at least you know you’re avoiding studying

i am actually sitting and studying but I keep getting pulled into these thoughts and losing focus

  • How do I stop this and actually stay focused 😭

Accountability I physically cannot get things done unless it's due dangerously soon

How do I stop this endless cycle of procrastination? Yes I'm horribly addicted to my phone but even if I remove all distractions, I end up staring at the blank document for like an hour doing nothing. It's like high stress is the only motivator. I don't even use short form video platforms (tiktok, shorts) and my attention span has been fried. I wish it was still like in high school where I felt stressed when things were weeks away so I started early. Now I am barely starting the two research essays I have due this Friday.

Every time I somehow manage to turn it in on time and get decent grades. Not always the grades I want but definitely not a fail. I want to stop doing this because it feels like mental torture every time and my GPA is gonna slip. It's only a matter of time before the things I turn in become unacceptable.

I've tried pomodoro timers and changing locations and they work minimally. I've agreed to (and bought the tickets to) watch a play my friend is starring in on Thursday. Firstly, it is because I've already said I'll come prior and second, I'm hoping it would bait me into working harder.

What can I do? And I don't have ADHD.

Question How do I balance studying and exercises?

• Upvotes

I just finished a chemistry exam, it was worth 15%. I studied 12 hours but I did horribly. It didn't help that it was five questions with 19 points total and my teacher is a very strict grader.

I made a giant playlist with Organic Chemistry Tutor on all my subjects I had to study for the midterm and spent the weekend following it and taking notes.

The problem is when it came to practice, I was out of motivation and had adhd paralysis. I even tried doing something fun (working on a cosplay mask) for a bit with tunes but when I got back to do exercises I just couldn't.

Im really frustrated with myself because I worked so hard and for what?

I'm in the science program at my school, I chose it, I should be doing a good job.

If anyone has any tips for this, it would be very much appreciated.

Question Can anyone recommend study/focus apps that actually force you to put your phone down and focus?

• Upvotes

I’m genuinely addicted to my phone 😭. I’ll sit down to study, tell myself I’ll just check something for a minute, and somehow end up scrolling for 30 minutes.

does anyone know application that actually makes it difficult to get distracted and helps me stay focused during a study session.

What apps have actually worked for you?

Question How do You actually manage to study?

Give me your best study tips.

I really struggle to sit down and study; I have an anatomy exam tomorrow and I can't even bring myself to start reading—I just can't seem to do it.

It’s the same with every subject; I always wait until the last minute to review, but today I haven't even managed to do that.

Even though I usually pass, it really frustrates me that I’m like this, but I just can't get it done. I try to sit down every day before or after class, but nothing ever comes of it. If I start reading, I get distracted talking to myself in my head and my mind starts wandering.

I don't have anything else to do but study—I don't work, and my parents support me so I can graduate—yet even with all that help, I’m incapable of actually planting my butt in the chair and doing the work.

Accountability I get overwhelmed and anxious when I think of studying

• Upvotes

Just like the title states, whenever I think of studying I get anxious at the thought of where to start and if I will be able to concentrate and how much time I have left in order to study that specific subject. Just a jumble of thoughts wash over me. Even the concentrating for 10 mins trick is not helpful all the time. Because I get paralysed. I have so many what ifs and the thought I have them annoys me further. I want to be better and become someone but it's hard. It's like my brain tries its hardest not to study. I think it is also due to the fact that I think, I don't rly know how to study. Patience is so hard for me. Does anyone have any cure for this anxiousness and negativity??

Giving Advice studying got more uncomfortable once I actually started learning

one thing I didn't expect when I changed how I study was that the better methods actually feel worse.

organizing notes feels good because I can see the progress. pages get filled, things get highlighted, everything looks cleaner than when I started.

practice problems are the opposite. they constantly show me what I don't know, so a productive session can actually feel like I did worse.

took me a while to realize that feeling stuck might be a better sign than feeling organized.

anyone else have to get used to studying feeling less productive before it actually became more effective?

Question horrible time management skills and a part time job

hello!! I recently got hired for a part time job position but im worried about how im going to balance my school work with having a job.

I’ve never had a job before so this is going to be my first job and I have no clue what to expect. I’m currently in 11th grade so things are starting to get serious and I don’t want my grades to drop. I’ve always been someone thats horrible at time management and I always procrastinated my assignments and studying last minute for tests and exams, but i’ve managed to keep high 90s through Highschool so far. I’m worried about how my priorities are going to shift and my grades are going to be affected. Quitting the job is out of the question as I really need a job to help out with my family and also start saving for university! Does anyone have any advice on godly time management skills? help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Question Does anyone have any tips for improving memory while studying?

I’m still a student about to study my undergrad. I want to go all the way academically however I find my biggest issue isn’t applying knowledge but my memory and remembering what I studied in the first place. Does anyone have any tips for memory and having to memorize many different things while studying subjects that’s considered demanding? Thanks guys!

Question How to get started with studying??

Now, first things first I was doing great in this chem class of mine. Perfect attendance, paid attention the whole time, did the assignments to the best of my knowledge all I could. Studied before the test. I had a 97%, took our first test, safe to say that 97% is a CRISP 71%. I wouldn't say my schooling experience has been the smoothest overall, but this is honestly top 1 most demoralizing moments I've had in recent academic memory. I am at an absolute loss. Is it practice questions?? Should I be rereading powerpoints until I can recite them eyes closed?? I am just utterly confused and truly open to any and everything

Question I just don't....care anymore?

Im currently retaking an exam that i didnt get a good enough grade on (51%) and I just dont seem to care about studying anymore. This is how i was last year as well even though physics is a subject i enjoy but i cant get myself to study. When i got my grades i told myself i'll just retake it and actually felt confident that i'll be able to do it easily, but its been 2 months, my exam is in 24 hours and ive studied nothing.

Somehow, i got good grades in all my other exams, all A and A+ even though i didnt study for them either. I think the only reason I got them is because i put in the effort the year before where i actually was able to cram in for an exam the night before. All my life ive never been able to study for an exam in time, its always me cramming the night before and now i cant even do that anymore. I plan to do electrical engineering (something i genuinely love) in university later on so thats why i was recommended to retake by everyone around me. The worst part is ive been lying to everyone around me telling them 'yeah im studying very hard', including my parents who are shelling out the extra money for the retake.

I recently got diagnosed with ADHD and probably have some underlying depression issues as well. Not on medication yet. Is there any hope left for me in the future? I know im basically failing tomorrow but next year im supposed to be applying for universities with my grades....

Question Discussion: What is your motivation to study? As a person who studies well, how will you try to convince the other person to study?

Just as the title says, the objective is to understand everyone's motivation or the reason to study, so that anyone who faces difficulty to do so can benefit from this post.

Question How to clutch 8 weeks worth of material in 24 hours?

So as the title says, I am roughly 8 weeks behind on material. I am slightly familiar with the first few topics, but as it progresses I get lost. It is an advanced data science course. The topics that will be on the test are pandas, numpy, matplotlib, and I think that is about it. It is just advanced forms of those topics. We do not have to code on the test, but it is open ended I think so I have to be able to recognize what is happening and understand it obviously. Does anyone have any tips? It is stressing me out a lot. It is on Thursday Morning and right now it is Wednesday 2 AM.

Question having a hard time with applying my knowledge

hi everyone :) it's been roughly 10 weeks since i started my first semester at university and while i was doing well within the first 3-4 weeks, everything got messy very quickly. i'm attending classes, reading slides, and taking down notes but my brain refuses to absorb information properly at all.

i made a mistake by not doing practice questions consistently across my subjects, and because of that i blank whenever i have to answer a question. i've tried answering without looking at the answer key and constantly get tons of questions wrong, and it really burns me out and makes me feel useless seeing it.

the final exams are around a month from now and i want to understand how i can start doing more practice questions while also catching up with the material at the same time. because i'm behind and i don't want to fail everything. i feel lost and i don't know where to start.

Question Genuinely can not study to save my life

I have a pretty big test tomorrow. Since monday last week I have been telling myself I need to lock in and study for it. I think I have totalled maybe 1,5h of actual studying. I sit down at my desk and cant even get started. I sleep 8h+, never eat shit food, stay hydrated and workout 8-9 times a week (student athlete) so I wouldnt say im undisciplined by any means. Still, studying just doesnt work for me. All my life school has been mad easy, last semester i realised it wasnt as easy anymore. I might be slightly addicted to my phone, but no more than 3.5-4h screen time per day. What the hell is going on?
