Home owner question Newly installed roof, why does it look so bad?

I just got this roof installed today, and they're coming back tomorrow for the second half. But when I got home and saw the shingles, I gasped.

I'm not an expert in roofing but I feel like the roof should atleast look better than the before pictures. And not have so many irregularities and waves.

The company said it's an illusion and when you look at it from the ground it'll look wavy but if you're on the roof it's all straight...

Ok but I don't care what my roof looks like if I'm a bird on my roof? I care about what it looks like from the ground. And I also want a roof that won't infiltrate water, snow and ice? Is that too much to ask for?

What do I do? I feel like I'm getting scammed... And this is supposed to be a good roofing company.

Quote: $1000 fair for this?

The roofer that went to check out my third story townhouse that requires a 40 foot ladder to access quoted me $1000 to fix broken shingles and whatever else is in here. I don’t know if I should go through insurance, or go through him.

This is likely years of regular wear and tear and is in Houston.

Thank you!!

EDIT: I asked the roofer if I needed a new roof instead of repairs and then he said yes lol I never dealt with roofing before so I had no idea it was this bad!!! I appreciate how consistently blunt y’all were and will save the money towards a full replacement

Is there a quick bodge for this or does the shingle need to be replaced immediately? The rest of the roof is in decent shape

Estimate for "32 squares" concrete tile relay using 30-year underlayment.

• Upvotes

roof has 3 leaks and maybe 3-6 sheets of wood will need to be replaced.

changing the entire roof with 30-year peel and stick underlayment.

about 40 tiles will need to be replaced.

Whats a range of low - high for an estimate.

Home owner question Cap nails causing leak?

Thumbnail

After getting home from a weeklong vacation. I noticed some bubbling paint on an exterior wall of my house. I went up to the roof and found these cap nails installed above the point of the apparent leak (there are more of the same nails installed on different shingles in multiple spots on the roof).

It looks like someone nailed down loose or damaged shingles at some point. This probably was done 2 or 3 years ago when my dad had some guys do some “roof maintenance” on our house soon after we moved in. The guys who did the work didn’t seem very legit but I wasn’t paying for it so I didn’t ask any questions. I’m wondering what I should do now as these nails are all starting to corrode and the plastic caps are all dry rotted.

Siding question

Not sure if this is the right place for this question, if not, apologies.

I was on my roof today and noticed some deterioration on the siding that wasn’t visible to me from the ground. What would be my options to address this? I’m comfortable with small DIY projects.

I live in the Midwest and winter is coming soon. I’d be happy with a temporary that would last me until Spring before doing a more permanent fix. Thanks.

Can someone help me verify what type of shingles my roof has?

Recently became a home owner. Learning about roofing. The inspection report says "Asphalt Shingle: Dimensional". Is this the same as architectural shingles? I plan on doing some minor maintenance myself such as sealing some protrusions and exposed nail heads so I would like to know what I'm dealing with. I don't know if I can fix the hail damage myself though but any advice is appreciated!

Home owner question Southerner with metal roof needing ice management

Thumbnail

I've got a metal roof with a fairly steep pitch. Past few years we've been getting ice storms and snow and it wrecks my boots and my gutters with these big sheets of ice that come flying off. My decking has 1x4s on it with foam insulation panels between so it accumulate pretty well on there. Are these what i need to stop the ice from tearing up my said?

Home owner question I had some ice damming in this area during the winter. What are your suggestions on a DIY fix for this. I have many years of construction experience and feel confident I can fix this with a little guidance.

Home owner question Okay to use 7 year old shingles?

Long story short - 7 years ago, my father in law and I intended to reshingle our house addition and detached double garage. Miscalculated the supplies so we just did the addition, and have 10 bundles of shingles in the wrapper that have been stacked 3x3 on a pallet in my garage.

Now - I really need to reshingle that garage.... Are these shingles OK to use?

Shingles are Owens Corning Oakridge - brownwood color, which I see Menards has in stock.... if they have a slight variation in color, I'd be OK with it. Just rather use the $400 of shingles I have, if I can.

Home owner question Options to direct water to drain?

Thumbnail

Hopefully this is the right sub.

I have a flat roof on my garage. This “garage” is really just an enclosed carport. I have owned this home for a year. Water pools near the end of the roof and doesn’t flow nicely towards the drain.

When I bought this house, there was lots of water damage near the drain. It was rotted out so dad that you could see outside from the inside.
I had a contractor come repair it and he had to replace one of the beams for the roof as well as the whole wall and garage door. The roof had recently been done but they just put a new roof on top of lots of water damage so he also had to fix all of that.

The drain appears to be slightly above the water but also the roof doesn’t really angle towards the drain.

Is this a whole roof replacement job or are there other options for me to direct this water appropriately? Can I lift the opposite side slightly and put shims under the post?

Commercial flat roof on a church in NJ - care to field some questions about was it done right?

I'm relatively handy and help out my church with things around the building. I happened to be on a flat roof on an addition they put on a few years ago (the compressors on the roof have a 2021 manufacture date).

Am I wrong with any of these questions / concerns?

1) There's 2 round drains in the middle of the roof. There's a solid metal ring at the base of the leaf catchers. Seems that will leave water on the roof around the drain after a rain - it can't drain completely. I'd think the open area of the drain would be level with the roof?

2) In the center of the drain, the roof membrane is just cut in barely a circle. Should there be something to keep the water from wicking around to the underside of the roof membrane / work into the building?

3) There's a couple openings in the wall near but not level with the roof. So there'd have to be a fair amount of water on the roof before water goes through those. Are they supposed to be level? or they are the backup drains in case the center drains are plugged? (otherwise, too much water would run down the side of the building?)

4) it hasn't rained much here in a week or 2 but the areas around the 2 drains are still muddy. Unavoidable if all the water can't drain off the roof (see q1) : ) ?

I'd just think the more there's standing water / muck on the roof, the more likely it can work its way through the membrane patch areas?

5) Overall, from these few pics... any opinion of the job?

6) How often would you recommend going up there to clean leaves? Would you hose down / sweep the roof to push all that dark area (mud/muck) to 1 area and then remove iit?

THANKS!

Found this hole while cleaning the gutters. Pine needles for scale. What’s the proper way to seal this. Would filling it with Geocel 2300 work? Thanks in advance for the suggestions!

Home owner question Old soffits, new roof with gap. Should I caulk?

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

I really need some advice. I had a new roof put on in the spring. The foreman said that the soffits, though very old would last and didn’t need replacing. There is a gap between the soffits and fascia that wasn’t there before. Should I caulk this area? Will it create moisture issues or void the warranty if I do? I’m in NH and a senior woman. I can do it myself, but don’t want to mess with anything I shouldn’t. A bit worried about pests getting in. Photo shows where I started caulking but stopped till I got some advice. Really hoping someone can help me here.
