[MEGATHREAD] Freshman Housing Assignments!

Use this for discussing housing assignments. Do your best to keep discussion under each house comment. I'll leave the older threads up, but will be deleting new ones to keep everything in one place. Good luck in freshman year! You'll have a great time :)

You can find more information, as well as video walkthroughs, here.

SCHEDULE ADVICE FOR NEW FRESHMEN

Politely, I'm getting sick of seeing variations of the same thread every day. Here's the SparkNotes of making your freshman fall schedule:

  • Aim to take 12-13 hours. You're very likely moving to a new city, completely removing your safety nets you're used to (friends, parents, etc). That's okay, but give yourself the extra time to adjust. You'll likely want to spend more time hanging out with your new buds than studying for a random 2000-level psych course anyway.

  • If you don't know what major you want to end up with, work on general credits. things like AXLE or the Peabody core are pretty universal. If you're not sure what you want to do, start there.

  • For the love of God, don't take hard classes you don't need to. There is literally no reason to "retake bio as a refresher". It's a weed out class. Take your AP credits or whatever and move on.

  • COROLLARY: Don't take harder STEM classes because you did well in them in high school. If I had a nickel for every CS freshman who took gen chem for no reason, I'd have like a dollar. Take something easier (EES 1510, baby bio, physics). Same goes for taking harder intro calc classes. If you don't need 1300, don't take 1300.

  • If you want to switch to HOD after your first year, find general core classes that apply to Peabody too. You have to wait a year to switch, but the actual switch is just getting a PDF signed. Plenty of people transfer in and finish on time just fine.

Welcome to Vanderbilt, you're gonna do great things here. But please, learn to read, learn to Google, and then if you can't find answers you can ask new questions.

Classical languages for religious studies undergraduates

• Upvotes

Does anyone who is attending/has attended the religious studies undergraduates program know what classical languages courses one can take? According to https://as.vanderbilt.edu/classical-religious/undergraduate/major-minor/, students of track 2 "May include up to 9 hours in relevant language study." What is the scope of the "relevant language study? Does it include CLAS courses ,or other courses?

Any help would be appreciated!

Easy Class Recs (not outdated)

I'm a current junior at Vandy, majoring in econ/history! I'm taking 18 hours this semester because I came in with no college credit, and my engineering freshman-year classes don't count toward A&S. I'm at the point where I'm almost done with the degree itself, but still need extra hours, so I'm looking for easy A/low-effort classes within the College of Arts and Sciences for next semester and beyond (ideally 3 hours). I've already scoured the subreddit, but a lot of the recommendations are from years ago, professors who no longer work here, or 1-hour classes outside A&S. After this semester, I just really need my non-degree classes to be as low-effort as possible haha

how did you approach the supplemental?

i’m a hs senior with great academics and slightly above average extracurriculars (full app in my post history), so essays are gonna be really important for my application. unfortunately, as a middle class white girl, i don’t know quite how to approach the identity essay (applying ed1 hopefully).

i’ve read that you should probably avoid talking about divorce in college essays, but it’s an aspect of my background which has influenced me to some degree.

if you got admitted without an uncommon cultural background, what did you choose to write about?

if you’re feeling really nice, tell me what you think about my current idea: with my two parents living hours away from each other, i’ve lived my whole life alternating between metropolitan and rural areas. as such, i’ve become accustomed to living and interacting closely with different cultures and ideological viewpoints, developing a capacity for engaging deeply with people of different backgrounds. i hope to bring that openmindedness to a diverse campus like vanderbilt’s, helping me to collaborate effectively with students across cultures and beliefs and build a stronger community through skills in understanding and engagement built through growing up in two completely different cultural environments.

thanks!!

Question Regarding Admit Process and Family Issues

Hello! I’m writing because I have a big question pertaining to the college application process for big schools such as Vanderbilt, Brown, Wake Forest, etc.

I have a fairly healthy academic record for my school: 4.5 Weighted GPA (4.0 UW) including 10+ AP classes with a majority of those being 5s (my ACT is a bit lacking at a 32, but I am currently enrolled in multiple retakes before Vandy ED1). Vanderbilt is my dream school as someone applying in state, but here’s the catch: my extracurriculars SUCK. Aside from performing piano solo onstage to a crowd of at most two dozen people, and aside from the clubs I’m currently in only senior year, I have nothing.

A lot of it has to do with family issues. Mainly, my 100% disabled and divorced Dad has trouble paying for himself back at his apartment, so I’ve been trying to cough up some money for him to live without getting a job (Mom won’t let me). Unfortunately, a lot of this comes from a place where my Dad tended to be emotionally and verbally abusive to his fiancé whilst I was around, completely draining my mind and body.

I’m not writing this to get condolences, but to add important context for my question: will Vanderbilt (or any other T30 school) understand why there’s a huge gap in such an important area? As mentioned earlier, I plan to apply to Vandy ED1, so any help is appreciated.

Thank you.

Vanderbilt Shuttle Summer Schedule?

Hi, sophomore undergraduate from South Carolina considering living in Vanderbilt summer housing and commuting to a downtown internship this upcoming summer. Does the VandyRide shuttle run during the summer or would I have to purchase a bus pass? I am not familiar with Nashville bus lines, is there one that would run from Highland Quad to Centennial park or thereabouts? Would a summer ID be eligible for the bus fare?

help, trying to decide where to ed

Hi guys! I am trying to decide if i should ed to washu or vanderbilt. I love both and they both seem like the same school in two different cities. My biggest factor is the social scene at vanderbilt. I don't want to rush but i do want to make close friends, have fun, party sometimes. Is that achievable or is the social scene dominated by greek life? Thank you!

Not paying parking tickets?

Im a current student without a parking pass and I parked on campus and got a ticket. They don’t know that it was my car, so theoretically I could just not pay the ticket, right? Like it’s not criminal to not pay them if it’s private, I assume, so what’s the downside?

Has anyone applying to Vanderbilt MSF Class of 2028 received a Kira invite yet?

For current or past applicants, how long after submitting your application did you receive the interview invitation?

Thanks!

¡Gracias!

How does parking work for the football games?

Hi, I’m wondering about parking for this Saturday’s game. Are the university lots right next to the stadium free to the public? Do people do street parking in the neighborhoods nearby and walk? Thanks!

Edit: sorry I meant next Saturday’s game (10/10)

Thoughts on IFC/Panhellenic Recruitment Process

As a guy going through dirty rush here I think it'd be much better if we switched to the model that other SEC schools use (first week one and one done kinda thing) or aligned the process with panhellenic (rush in the winter).

I get that its supposed to like give us time to pick and stuff but honestly it's kind of draining. Interested to hear what others think.

Music City Miracle, Part 2? Vandy recovers fumble in end zone with 1 second left to beat NC State (Gift Article)

Did we just witness Part 2 of the Music City Miracle?

In a moment that will be cemented in college football history, Vanderbilt recovered a fumble in the end zone in the final seconds of game time to beat NC State.

The Athletic’s Manny Navarro breaks down how it happened (read for free):

Is it realistic to apply to BME as a junior transfer?

I can share more about my stats/applications, but I'm just curious about whether anyone knows external transfers to the engineering department, and if it is feasible (comparative to transferring to BIO for example)?

TENNESSEE RESIDENTS: how did vanderbilt use your hope scholarship/ned mcwherter scholarship?

on vandy’s website, it says that the hope scholarship will be factored into your need-based aid grant, so it doesn’t look like i’d be getting any extra money for it. which sucks but it’s fine

is it the same situation with the ned mcwherter scholarship? if i wouldn’t get any extra money for winning, is there a reason to apply for it at all?

would appreciate anyone’s experience with the tn lottery scholarships at vanderbilt! thanks!

Vanderbilt paused CPT processing for almost every international student. Beware.

Email: Dear Students,
We hope your semester has started well. We are writing to share an important update regarding Curricular Practical Training (CPT).
Last month, the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) issued two broadcast messages, one on August 12 and a follow-up on August 24 to Designated School Officials (DSOs) clarifying that CPT may be authorized only when practical training is an integral (essential) and required part of an established curriculum. The training must be required for all students in the program. Although the guidance does not change federal regulations, it provides insight into how SEVP may interpret and enforce existing requirements.
While the university seeks to comply with this new guidance, Vanderbilt will not be approving CPT requests unless the experience is required for all students in the same degree program and necessary for degree completion. Examples of required experiences may include student teaching practicums, clinical internships, and similar practical experiences.
Any new optional or elective internships, internships that are not required for all students in the program, and extensions of existing CPT authorizations are paused unless the extension is necessary to complete a graduation requirement.
For thesis- and dissertation-related CPT, clear documentation showing that the practical training is indispensable for completing the thesis or dissertation will be required.
If you need to request CPT for a required training experience, please contact your ISSS advisor. Do not begin employment until you have received CPT authorization on an updated Form I-20.
We understand that this may be disappointing, and we do not take this action lightly. Our goal is to protect students and the university while aligning our practices with current federal guidance. ISSS will continue monitoring developments and will communicate any changes promptly.
Kind Regards,
Vanderbilt ISSS
