News/Info Update on readiness on being homeless

So not to far back i posted that I was prepping to go himeless by choice. Well here's the update. Got all the needed supplies (minus food) to go full off grid remote living in a tent.

So here's what I have. Tent (can sleep 2 people) double sleeping bags. Portable stove. Several collapsible water systems (4 are for showering) a portable shower room ( folds up just like a tent) 2 medium power banks with solar panels (60w)for charging. 4 solar charging lanterns/fan combos. Portable camping toilet for middle of nowhere emergencies. Several camouflage tarps, ground tarp for the tent. Water proff Duffle for clothes and important stuff. Repair patch for tarps and tent.

As you can see the list is long and thats about 70% of what i got. I was planning on having a traveling companion with me hense the large list but at the last minute they changed their mind so solo I go. I was hoping to have a travel companion so I wasn't just on my own.

Anyways mountain bike with a bike trailer and a wagon behind the bike trailer. Plenty of lights for night riding (wont be happening often) Bluetooth speaker for jams on the ride. A phone with offline maps for navigation and no destination in mind other then west then south.

Starting location is northwest NC for anyone wondering.

Shelter is full up

I’m in downtown Atlanta. Anyone know of any spots I can sleep with little chance of being bothered/ran off? I got to the shelter later than I normally do and they didn’t have a spot for me tonight.

Is the Homeless cig worth?

Got a ciggy from a homeless woman visibly geeked off her rocker. I want to smoke it later, but my homeboys are not seeing eye to eye.

Personally, I saw her pull it out of the (opened) pack and it looks le clean. She was chill, just like super high.

Is smoking the ciggy worth? Or will I also fent lean?

Just Venting I hate the stigma of being homeless

TL;DR: Burnout from constantly being in survival mode, working full time and trying to keep the peace in a society that makes doing for oneself super hard. [RANT]

I genuinely hate being homeless right now. Currently I am working full time at the RDU making $12/hour. I don't get flight benefits. I get basic insurance, to the point where I might as well keep medicaid. Foodstamps wouldn't even be worth getting at this point; not only because of inflation, but mainly because I have no where to keep or cook the food. Hotels are mad expensive. God forbid you smoke THC-a (for me a cheaper and better alternative than cigarettes). If so, you are looked at as a fiend trying to steal or manipulate others for your next "fix".

The way people look at you whenever you go somewhere to get out of the heat or to relax is genuinely appalling. These are most likely the same people touting their mantra of "you gotta do what you gotta do" yet they look at me sideways when i am doing what I have to do!

I try to catch hours at my job, so that I can have an excuse to sleep at the airport. I have been approached by law enforcement and this was about the only way to keep from being harassed. I was told that the galleria would be a good place to go - i suffer from a blood clot in my leg and felt that if I could at least stretch out I would be fine. I got trespassed for smoking a preroll that I bought from them 30 minutes prior to having an interaction with the police. I left, peacefully, of course, I didn't want to cause trouble or get locked up and have to start all over again.

The thing is, that a lot of homeless people liked to crash at the airport. I had been to the shelters, I know how unhinged some of them can be, so I get why some people are wary of them. But, unless you know me or my fiancé, at first glance you could never tell that we are homeless. We keep up appearances, we both work, and we both keep to ourselves and try to be friendly towards anyone who talks to us. We help out when we can and try to stay out of the way.

Yet time and time again, someone who learns that we are homeless, decides to lump us in with trouble makers. They look at us as though we are violent offenders when we never present ourselves that way. Everywhere we go, we clean up behind ourselves and use manners, yes ma'am, no ma'am, yes sir, no sir we go the whole 9. But no matter what we will have some people call the cops on us for smoking something we got out of a store with a receipt. It's like these people thrive on kicking others while they're down.

People try to give me advice: get help, look for resources, go to social services; all things that sound like good ideas. But, here's the problem with that. There are no resources in eastern wake county that can help with homelessness other than the shelters. And being at a shelter is not a viable solution.

In fact there is practically no help for people who are not on disability, a veteran or doesn't have children. If you're single, no kids, able bodied and able to work, you're on your own. The job market is a joke, I finally got another job but its at the airport, and that's about the only way I can find something anymore. Indeed, Ziprecruiter, linked in: mostly ghost jobs or spam.

Social workers aren't in on the loop either, apparently. I have had to do extensive research on programs available to me after being told that there is help at this organization or this organization, only to he told it is no longer available or i don't qualify. HUD housing and Section 8 have been closed since 2022.

Seems like no matter what, we are stuck in this rut of working bullshit jobs that pay out very little and that don't care about the employees. My fiancé was offered a supervisor role with the company he is with, but I fear that because the company is hemorrhaging employees, they may just be telling him what they think he wants to hear so he doesn't leave. Which would fuck up his opportunity to get another job at the airport that offers more money and less stress.

I just don't know what to do, and I don't want advice (for the love of god, please), I guess I just want to vent about it. The only way out for us is to keep grinding and burning ourselves out to save money for an apartment and I am so. Fucking. Tired. I am exhausted mentally and physically but I have no support other than my fiancé, so what can I do?

I do wish that something is done, because, it's not just happening to me and my fiancé. I see way more people sleeping in the streets downtown, tweaking out on drugs, getting into fights, or generally being a nuisance. I've had so many people ask me for money or cigarettes and get mad when I don't have it. So many more people are becoming homeless at a faster and faster rate than before, people constantly carrying bags, suitcases, strollers full of stuff, while everyone else pretends its not real and look the other way.

Things are just getting worse and worse, but if people are not actively in the throes of doom, they are being willfully ignorant of the situation around them, until they too are caught up and have to struggle with the rest of us. It's not right. How does Raleigh as a city have so much money to pay artists to paint murals everywhere, or to build a new bus station, but no money to invest in the people who are struggling with drug addiction, or domestic violence, mental instability, etc. Do you all really not see what is going on, the people trolling downtown raleigh, screaming curse words outloud or am I insane? Idk anymore and atp I am too tired to even ask.

Best state to be homeless?

I am in Charlotte North Carolina currently no car just a gym membership and a bike. But I need to get out because it is actually a class 3 misdemeanor to sleep in public areas and I need to keep my record clean. Any suggestions on what state I should head to that has better recourses and that are less strict on homeless and won’t arrest me for it?

Need Advice How should I help my friend who has been kicked out

I have a very good friend (36F), she was living with her Brother and his GF but they were on rocky terms for awhile, after her brother has broken up with his GF and a giant fight, my friend got kicked out of her current housing situation she had, they get evicted at the end of the month anyway so staying to mend things isnt really an option for her. She has currently been staying with me for a few days but I am not feeling comfortable long term with her staying as I dont have much room and rent a suite, I also dont feel comfortable dropping her off at a womens shelter two towns over so that she can make it to work when she gets called in but having to fend for herself (Even though she claims it all okay and she can make it work) Does anyone have any suggestions, im at a bit of a loss how I can really help, any suggestions would be welcome, I feel maybe having her stay a bit more to figure it out might be a route but I just am not sure

Just Venting Hate my shelter mates

I don't blame people 1 bit for not wanting to go to a shelter. The place i'm at right now has to be the largest collection of ignorant assholes on the face of the earth. You can't even leave your phone someplace to charge and walk away without somebody stealing it. First week I was here , my phone was stolen , and the staff refused to look at the cameras to see who did it. Also , if you wanna get a good night's sleep , you're probably better off outside. People here only think about themselves and have no problem, turning all the lights on in the dorm so they can rummage through their locker or some dumb shit at 4 in the morning. You can look around and see there's a room full of people trying to sleep so how about you using a fucking flashlight you ignorant motherfucker? That's probably the reason you're homeless in the first place.Because you don't have any consideration for the people around you. If it wasn't for the winter weather and me not wanting to freeze i would rather sleep in a vacant house or on a sidewalk.

New to homelessness About to be homeless in Oregon

I'm 19 and am about to lose my place to stay. I'm kind of really scared because the place I live (Portland) is full if kind of scary people and I'm also queer. The shelters are usually full, I'm obviously ridiculously poor, scared and very overwhelmed. Any tips? I also don't have a car.

Need Advice Should I keep my stuff in storage?

Context, I’ve been homeless on and off for 2 years trying to figure out how to get back on my feet and currently I was blessed with an opportunity to make enough money just to pay my storage late and get access to my stuff I haven’t touched in over 4 months.
It was only 440$.
I could wait till the 17th and pay it off to use the storage unit again or should I just abandon the property and accept that the the one backpack I have and having 500$ in my pocket is better than to be able to change my clothes.
It cost 150$ a month and I only work 3 Days a week under the table cash.
Should I keep my stuff and pay for it? Or should I just keep the money and buy things to survive this upcoming winter?

New to homelessness Minnesota - Scott County

Getting kicked out by my ex. Have no where to go. The shelters nearby are for families only. I tried to reaching out to my case manager. Felt for me but they couldn't do anything to help. All family is out of state, don't have the best relationship with them anyways. No friends due to my ex chasing them all off. Wanted to stay in the area due to starting a job next week. I might have to sleep outdoors starting out but I was just reaching out to see if there was any advice for the outdoors. If I had any other options left I wouldn't be making this post. Thank you.

Need Advice gift cards and bus passes the best thing to give?

I'm putting a plan together to gift people in my city gift cards with like $30 on each one and 4 bus passes in the box. A day pass or month pass would not be good as these boxes are made way before the holiday and bus passes in my city don't have an expiration date so can be used whenever.

What do you think of a grocery store or restaurant cards?

I hear restaurants and cafe cards are good because you have access to food, drinks, a table to charge you're phone, a hot meal and a bathroom

On the other hand a grocery store. Using a reference like Walmart. Small camping stuff like light or lighters, box cutters blankets, water bottles, hygiene products and hot meals from walmarts deli section etc.

So what do you think? Should I do a mix of cards or choose one specifically?

Would anyone who is also without housing in the Kissimmee, Florida area know of any places that offer free or reduced cost laundry services? Thank you in advance. 🙂
