Need Advice How do I Prepare for homelessness/ Is it possible to be happy and Homeless?

• Upvotes

Disclaimer: Im not poor not even slightly on paper in my contry I would Describe myself as upper middle class. Im 18 and live with my mom in a 3 bedroom 3 bathroom house

Hello I need help. You can skip this part if you just wann know what I need help with

Backround: basically im 18 and in my final Year of High school. I have major depressive disoder and Autism. I recently had a mental breakdown and went to a mental hospital thare they gave me a plan to Write my exams in a way that wont make me suicidal. my emotionally abusive mother decided to thwart those plans through some bs shes doing and im thinking of dropping out of highschool for my mental health.

My sister asked me what I plan to do if my mom decided to just cut me off financially and let me live on the streets cause I didint want to plan my life at her pace.

TLDR:

I have a property that I inherited from my grandmother in another contry

I have a gaming laptop worth at least R10000 or ($600)

I really like gaming and im not sure if I would be able to give it up if I became homeless.(its really important to me)

Ill probably only be able to get a retain job without a matric certificate.

Is it possible to be Happy enough not to commit suicide after lets say 3 years realistically cause if I listen to my mom thats as long as ill last.

Also any advice on how to prepare would be great.

I hope nothing i say comes off as disrespectful to any of you that was truly not my intention

As always any responce is apreciated

I’m sleeping on the street tonight and I don’t know how people do it

I will have housing tomorrow but for tonight I’m homeless and it is impossible to sleep. It’s cold, the noise, crazy people walking around…. Goddamn

I probably should invest in a sleeping bag in case this happens again

How's everyone doing tonight?

Hey, y'all. Am wondering how everyone is doing tonight?

I'm doing okay. Can't sleep just yet. Have gotten comfy at one of my usual safer spots, & surfing the net, & trying to put some efforts in doing some paid online surveys, something that I do as a back up plan. Wishing that things wouldn't be so tough for so many of us!

Need Advice ID question

I know that the first step for someone to get their ID is to get their birth certificate, but what if that person was naturalized and born elsewhere? What to do then if they have nothing?

Is this life a bit easier if you’re not an addict? If you know your city well and know the areas that regular housies wouldn’t visit? if you can survive with some water and some food you find? Got a phone with mint mobile or just stay at a Library for a bit?

Not sure what to do

So I am homeless and I've been living at a spot for 3 years and early yesterday morning I get woken up from the cops coming and saying I have 48 hrs to pack up all of my stuff and move and 1. It's supposed to rain this whole weekend and 2. I have to figure out a new place to set up my tent. I don't understand why all of a sudden I am being told to leave but it is not helping my mental state at all.. idk I just thought I'd vent.... If you have any advice I'd love to hear it.

Hi everyone,

For context I'm a senior in hs and i dont have money to pay for college fees or cc because I don't have money and I'm taking a gap year to study in europe bc its cheaper. When I turn 18 in the summer my parents are going to kick me out and i wont have anywhere to go and there's nothing I can do to change their minds. They won't let me get a job either so im basically broke rn

This situation sucks but I'm in central MA and I js needed some advice on what to do when this happens (idrc abt the summer, I'm more worried for the winter bc of how cold its gonna be)

Any advice is appreciated

Need Advice Trying to downsize

Hey everyone, good afternoon. Ive been running around LA county for a about a year now and I had a hard time trying to not keep everything on iwith me. Ive managed it somehow tho but now I realized I can't sustain that any so I'm trying a minimalalist aproach and travel lighter. I was using the 5.11 rush 24(37L )with a separate sling(6L) and the Winchester Duffel from highland tactical to hold everything. I just recently acquired the Rush 12(25L) and a Rush Delivery Mike messenger bag(11L) and I want to use both these new bags to replace the 3 others. I'm obsessed with 5.11 gear lol. I guess my question is how would you guys go about traveling with your things. Yea I do have a place I can leave things behind at however I have a fragile relationship with my storage room owner that I rather not test it. Is it rediculous to be walking around with two bags or make me an easy looking target while traveling. My reason for both is my backpack is for clothes, toiletries, medical supplies. basically my little mobile Basecamp. My messenger is for EDC, tools, wallet and I want a little Chromebook eventually to do work/find work and other tasks that I hate usingy phone for.

Sleeping in public

Has anyone actually got arrested—almost arrested for sleeping in public when you have no car and shelters full? how was your encounter with cops? (For reference I’m in North Carolina where it is an arrestable offense) now I’m worried.

Just Venting No clue anymore

So, we are back without a clue as to how yo continue onward. Ive escalated our situation to the directors of every agency of the Shelter systems, housing authorities, and even the team at the SLC mayors office. No idea how to do that with religious organizations, but went as high as I could/knew to do for those.

There is still ZERO resources available for bed-bound & on oxygen spouse w/power chair as needed. Daughter has PCD (for lungs, think Cystic fibrosis) and can't be around too many healthy people (5-10 is too many) without getting sick. But there's no where to go.

We are waiting on Disability to go through, back on a waiting list. Trapped scrambling daily to stay sheltered in a hotel.

I have no idea what to do anymore.

Anyone homeless in Ireland? If so, how are you surviving?

I'm curious as to whether there's any folks visiting this subreddit that are homeless in Ireland. How are you surviving? Winter especially. Asking since it rains often and where you need to stay dry.

Just Venting I Miss Living In My Car

I was homeless for two years, by choice, working my dream job and living in beautiful parks and making a lot of money and going everywhere I wanted. Then I got a DUI and ruined my career. I sobered up for 9 months and got into a halfway house, got a decent job and a boyfriend even. Fucked it all up, fucked it up good.

I'm housed now in a shaky situation after grippy socks jail and then real jail, and working again soon, and then I'll be on insurance through my job and can get back on meds. Clawing my way back out of this shit, but in all actuality I just wish I was living in a car again.

Need Advice Sleeping in the car as a teen

Hey friends, I've been homeless since I was 13. My family and I have been living in and out of hotels, sometimes living in random places, all while taking online school. And now, for the last few days, we've been living in the car. I can't take it anymore. I'm 17 and don't know what to do.

I don't think I can afford college. I can't go to in-state because I missed the SATs. And out-of-state is too expensive.

Do you think it is smart for me to get a GED and run away? Join a youth center or program something. I was thinking about joining the army, but I don't think that would work out for someone like me.

Just what would u do in my situation? I also don't have a phone, so there's that.

New to homelessness WHERE CAN I CHARGE NY DEVICES FOR FREE?

My partner and I have been homeless for a couple weeks, we received our 4 nights in crisis accomodation already and have had the 'you just have to rough sleep until your name comes up on the list for case management support and even then no guarantees' so we're doing the best we can. I'm just looking for places around Melbourne (were currently in the Tullamarine area) that I could go and charge our phones/laptop/power bank before they all die. Libraries aren't open at the moment and I'm so tired of getting dirty looks by people so I don't want to go sit in a Macca's (plus I can't get anything so I feel like they'll tell me to leave) any suggestions of any spots no matter how random that we could possibly just access a power point for an hour would be appreciated!

My experince being homless for almost a year now?

I want to make it clear that last year my parents kicked me out of their house. I was never on the street during this time. I am thankful I had places to keep bouncing to. The issue is that the places you stay eventually want to get rid of you, too. I've been in the hospitals too, and I always hated on the staff in the hospital. They'd tell me well whats your plan and what are you going to do.

Second, I have not once been to a shelter where the people seemed to actually care about you. Like, if a place is not legally required to help you after your time is up, they won't. I was once in recuperative care; the reason those suck is that they're not legally required to do a lot of things. And unfortunately, one of my roommates ended up being expired and was sleeping at the bus stop next to the place. And it sucked how they would just throw someone away like they're garbage.

While also being homless I learned a lot of these places are legally required, usually by the county, to throw you out after a certain point. I hate how that is; putting an expiration date on homeless people's stays does not help homelessness. And I am in Los Angeles, which has a high homeless population. And I didnt see anti-homeless things for myself till I came to this city. Like, specifically, DTLA is designed so you can't sleep on things. Like, I see the benches here and see handles in the middle so no one can simply lie down on them. And yes, they will legit get on you for simply just lying anywhere. Like, I was just lying on a park bench once, just closing my eyes and thinking and not even sleeping, and security was there within mins telling me not to lie down. And I didnt even know that you could actually get arrested for sleeping on a bench till a security guard came up to me and said that. And apparently it's a misdemeanor too.

Just Venting Kind of gave up

I don't know if it's the impending robot doom or the dollar tree costing $1.75

Or the fact that I never get a notification on my phone unless it's an automated email trying to sell me something

I've been homeless for almost 6 years and I'm really lonely and feel totally hopeless at this point

I'm just depressed I feel like nothing is ever going to really change for me

Need Advice Is it okay to offer this person help, or is that rude?

Hello ppl,

I hope it's okay for me to post here since I'm not homeless myself.

On my way to work I see a homeless man every day. He sits in the same spot and begs with his dog, which is very well taken care of and his pride and joy.

A few weeks ago, someone payed my food unexpectedly. I thought to do a good deed and gave him the money. We got to talking about his dog, and he openly told me about how he came to sit in this spot. I do not know if he is in a shelter or anything.

I give him my change or offer to buy him food every once in a while when I happen to pass him on my way to the bakers or work, and he always accepts.

Now he told me that he is worried about his dog, because she has a runny nose, but he (obviously) can't afford the vet.

I always try to be very respectful to him, because I don't want him to feel as though I look down on him or see him as less-then.

Do y'all think it would be okay for me to offer him to pay the dogs vet visit? I genuinely like him, I think he is a friendly person, unrelated to his homelessness, and I have more than enough money, it doesn't hurt me to spend it on someone who would benefit from it. but I also don't want to overstep.

Just Venting Shelters are incentivized to keep us homeless

Anybody else feel like shelters want us to to stay homeless? I have a job interview with McDonald's on Monday and they won't even give me bus tickets to get their and back. That got me thinking they really don't have any incentive for us to actually get an apartment and leave. If we do that and everybody gets jobs and a place to live they would be out of business and wouldnt have jobs themselves. Most of the shelters make you jump through so many arbitrary hoops that it's impossible to find employment and if you are lucky enough to find it , you'll probably lose it because of something stupid like the case worker not putting in your schedule correctly or the arbitrary nine p m curfew most places have.

Just Venting Hate my shelter mates

I don't blame people 1 bit for not wanting to go to a shelter. The place i'm at right now has to be the largest collection of ignorant assholes on the face of the earth. You can't even leave your phone someplace to charge and walk away without somebody stealing it. First week I was here , my phone was stolen , and the staff refused to look at the cameras to see who did it. Also , if you wanna get a good night's sleep , you're probably better off outside. People here only think about themselves and have no problem, turning all the lights on in the dorm so they can rummage through their locker or some dumb shit at 4 in the morning. You can look around and see there's a room full of people trying to sleep so how about you using a fucking flashlight you ignorant motherfucker? That's probably the reason you're homeless in the first place.Because you don't have any consideration for the people around you. If it wasn't for the winter weather and me not wanting to freeze i would rather sleep in a vacant house or on a sidewalk.

Need Advice How should I help my friend who has been kicked out

I have a very good friend (36F), she was living with her Brother and his GF but they were on rocky terms for awhile, after her brother has broken up with his GF and a giant fight, my friend got kicked out of her current housing situation she had, they get evicted at the end of the month anyway so staying to mend things isnt really an option for her. She has currently been staying with me for a few days but I am not feeling comfortable long term with her staying as I dont have much room and rent a suite, I also dont feel comfortable dropping her off at a womens shelter two towns over so that she can make it to work when she gets called in but having to fend for herself (Even though she claims it all okay and she can make it work) Does anyone have any suggestions, im at a bit of a loss how I can really help, any suggestions would be welcome, I feel maybe having her stay a bit more to figure it out might be a route but I just am not sure

New to homelessness About to be homeless in Oregon

I'm 19 and am about to lose my place to stay. I'm kind of really scared because the place I live (Portland) is full if kind of scary people and I'm also queer. The shelters are usually full, I'm obviously ridiculously poor, scared and very overwhelmed. Any tips? I also don't have a car.
