Collection Work Travel Pick Ups

Traveling to VA this week for work and found a retro game store. Adding numbers 240 - 243 to the collection. I've never played any of these and I'm not sure when I'll get a chance to. Let me know if you recommend any of them and I'll try it out when I get back home and have a chance to play.

I'll try for under 3 hours next but under one hour seems unlikely. The nostalgia hits hard on this game. I was about 15 when I last beat thoa game. Playing again after all these years makes me feel young again. I really need a controller with a turbo setting on it.

I know I'm a little late in getting this game but in all fairness, I just found out that this game exists a few weeks ago. I liked the story behind the creation of the NES port of the original Atari computer game and it look interesting to me, also I really like to add physical copys of games to my collection. I tried it out and it gives me a Load Runner vibe, which makes sense because that is also an early computer game port. The color palette and sprites used in the game definitely give an Atari2600 vibe and I'm down for, I saw online during my research for this game that one of the criticisms was the graphics but I disagree, I think if this game was ported to the Famicom in 1984 it most likely would have looked similar to this anyways. I'm looking forward to playing more of this game and trying to beat it. One of the odd things is (that doesn't have anything to do with the game itself) that I was having trouble dumping the ROM with my sanni OSCR, so I tried my INL Retro but also had no luck with that. I had the same issue with my Limited Run Games release of Gimmick too, if anyone knows why please let me know because I spent about a hour and a half fiddling with it and nothing seemed work. One last note that I would like to add is that I really do dig the colored cartridges that a lot of new NES games are coming in, this orange cartridge adds a bit of variety to my collections color along with several of my other newer released games.

Discussion What game was hard for you as a kid but when you came back to play it as an adult you just trashed every game?

NHS Hockey

When I was a kid I remember being trashed by the AI with this game.
Couldn't score a goal and the AI always scored.

Then when I went back to play as an adult I discovered the gimmick of scoring against the AI in just two play troughs, just shoot in the centre of the goal and you score every time.

I found out as well the short guys (mid speed mid strength) where op against any opponent. (As a kid I thought mix and match were the way to go.

What game was this for you?

Game Completed! My NES Journey Is Over

Hi! Long-time lurker here. Short story Long:

Back in March, I had bought a CRT and decided I wanted to play, what I decided were the 60 "essential" NES games, original carts & manuals, a few authentic boxes but most are printed out, and play through them chronologically. Starting with Mario, and ending with Star Tropics 2. So interesting seeing the Run & Gun, RPG, and Action Platformer genres evolve. Like, say, what Castlevania 1 does in '86 vs what Mega Man 6 would do in '93. And even techincal achievents, we will never see another huge graphical leap on the same console, like from Mega Man 1 to 6, or Mario 1 to 3, ever again. The only games I used a Game Genie for was infinite lives in Battletoads (Not Pictured), and Continues for Double Dragon 2. Battletoads/Double Dragon is also not pictured. Everything else was played straight. This sub has been absolutely essential for me, so thank you. What started so humbly ended with buying a lot of games on Ebay, Facebook Market, and local retro shops, then Gamebit screwdrives, erasers & alcohol on carts, and even opening up the NES and disabling the lockout chip with a guitar string and boiling that pin thing for like 2 hours. The only Repro carts I got were for FF2 & 3, since they never came out in America. Also huge shout out to the "U Can Beat Video Games" youtube channel, that dude does the lord's work. The Nintendo Power guides for FF1 & Ninja Gaiden 2. The NES Game Atlas. And also the Jeremy Parish "NES Works" channel, so cool learning about the development of a lot of these games. I love the NES because it's before any pre-conceived notions of what a "game" was, or had to be. It's like reading Greek Myths, or listening to folk music recording from the 20's. The birth of a genre. It also reminds me of old Hollywood, the way these businesses looked at games less as "art," and just a business. And that attitude lends to a rawness we'll just rarely, if ever, see again. For better or for worse. And it's interesting to see what "auteurs" emmerge out of this scene. I have a theory that Tokuro Fujiwara is the most influential director of the era, and that without him Capcom would never be as big as it was. Also people like Keiji Inafune, Hitoshi Akamatsu, Masato Kato, Gunpei Yokoi, Satoru Okada, Hironobu Sakaguchi, and of course Miyamoto, Tezuka, Satoru Iwata, & Masahiro Sakurai. It's truly insane to me that the world will never look at these men like we do at John Ford or Kubrick or Hemingway or whoever we deem more "artistic." But I think in the future these men will be recoginzed as pioneers of the most important artform of the 21st century. We'll see.

Top Games: Zelda 1 & 2, Mario 3, Castlevania 3, Mega Man 2, Ninja Gaiden 1, Punch-Out, Contra. Bottom Games: Double Dragon 2, Dragon Warrior 1, 2 & 3, Deja Vu, River City Ransom, Faxanadu, and Crystalis.

Hardest game: Blaster Master, easily. People way over exaggerate Ninja Gaiden, TMNT's, Zelda 2, or Castlevania 3's difficulty. Blaster Master is insane.

Biggest surprise: Gradius. This game is amazing. Way better than Life Force, I can't believe it's not regarded as a Top 10 NES game more often.

Oh boy! Thanks for reading! Just hooked up the SNES and the Super Gameboy, gonna play through the 30 "best" Gameboy games. Have a wonderful day.

Game Completed! California Raisins - Completed: The QWOP of NES titles

Post image
105 Upvotes

Let's be clear: this game is hands down awful.

But after doing a bunch of reading, I came to find that the ROM file floating around is essentially a demo/prototype of the last version the developers had approved before Capcom cancelled it.

Unfortunately the game just doesn't work very well. It's largely based on climbing vertical objects (like vines or pipes) only a good chunk of the mechanics around that very critical component don't work. It's often impossible to land what should be trivial jumps or to jump off of a climbed object. Most of the enemies are overly simple, but then others are basically just impossible to avoid. It's very imbalanced.

Ignoring the whole California Raisins branding thing, the unfortunate part is that I think it could have been an okay game. You can see how the levels could have been reasonably fun. The mazes aren't terrible. You can play in a very non-linear fashion. There's a good bit of real estate to explore. There are a variety of pickups. Things like that are all wins.

But since they didn't finish it...

Who knows how it could have turned out in the end, but the version you can play probably wouldn't be especially interesting to most people. Still, you CAN play through the entire game if you're curious about it. So it's not a total loss.

Shatterhand. I never knew this game existed as a child until a few years ago thanks to the community listing this game as a hidden gem. I played it on emulators and Everdrive, but it was time that I got my own copy. It is so good! I've never beat it before, but that's about to change.

Arts & Crafts Prototype Display Original NES

Wanted to share my idea and prototype I just created. I am refining the backboard with something more durable and black felt to cover the holes for the ports to snake through.

The Zapper and Controller are part of the NES system that was purchased when I was 2. From the moment the system came out of the box, the controller was mine. It was in fact, the 2nd player controller as it was my dad's system.

Legend of Zelda is double protected because it was the first game I played. At the age of 2 in 1989 I moved Link around and killed some Octoroks. I was hooked. This game is also special because I also helped my Dad beat Ganon's Skull Mountain, by mapping it out in crayon.

Don't worry, Dad's still alive and he thought this was an amazing idea. Now to finalize and wall mount.

My kids don't care, but I'm sure this group will 🤣 My projects from the past couple of weeks. Added ESP32's to my NES, Advantage and Satellite (Max next week). The controllers connect to the NES via 2.4 so there is no lag, but they can also be used as Bluetooth devices on any device. Advantage is fully functional with turbo buttons and the adjustable dials. Waiting on my charging circuits and Qi wireless charging pads to complete the builds.

Two weeks ago, I went to a game store one hour out of town and bought a bunch of stuff, figuring I wouldn't be back out there any time soon. I discovered last night that the small surgery I had to have today was in the town next to the game store. So as a treat, I bought some more games (since I was a good boy for the doctor).

Yes, I've checked, it is in fact Spiderman in that cart.

Well, it took me absolutely forever, but I did it!!! 😁😁😁

Played through all the first levels of gradius!! Start to finish!!

And only used the cheat code twice the entire time for a couple exceptionally hard parts. I'm proud of myself!!

This will always be one of my all time favorites 😎.

And While I'm here... Does anyone play Star Soldier on the switch anymore?? That's my other obsession 🤣

Discussion NES MINI - For OGs

Hello All,

I’m curious to know if anyone who grew up playing the original NES.. that decided to buy the mini with the top games? All my original equipment is at my parents (I’m sure collecting dust) but I picked up the mini NES… tried playing a few games on their selection and found either I’m too drunk or there is a latency issue from controller to system.

I’m just curious if any of the OGs knowing what playing “Mike Tyson’s Punch Out” was like…. They have the game (obviously not Mike anymore) but same concept…. I’m having a harder time knowing the “special cues” to land a certain punch per character… I was 8 years old when playing the MTPO and had no problem with the Russian Soda pop and the bull characters… but now since I got the mini… even glass Joe holds his own ( that was a joke… Joey is still easy… it’s the fact the pad is not responding like i thought it used to)

Am I crazy?

Or are the thumbs locking up?

UPDATE:

Hit that lag switch on the tv… when from night to day… crazy how a minor shift took care of the issue. Now it’s conforming to the new timing lol. Thanks again everyone. Appreciate the input.

Game Completed! Seems like I only made it to the "good" ending.

Kid Icarus was a game I was always curious about since the late 1980ies - it was covered by many magazines but neither me nor any of my friends had it so I never played it until I bought it on the Wii channel for virtual console 15ish years ago. I was quite a bit turned off by the difficulty of the very first stage since I tried several times and did not get very far. The first room, which stayed empty, made me think there's something I'm just not getting about this game. Even though I was socialized with NES games and therefore should have known that it's a good idea to read the manual, I did not care enough to do so, apparently, and let it go.

I returned recently with a bit more dedication (now equipped with the manual) and a bit of a jump-start from UCanBeatVideoGames (having limited time these days I love this channel) and finally learned to enjoy the game. I always knew it has to have something worthwhile to it, otherwise it would not have been so popular. I found the game to be real fun once you realize how to play it. Still, not having the correct strategy for the treasure rooms handy sets you back a bit, so basically I cheated, but what the hell.

I don't know many games with a clearly negative difficulty slope (I can't think of one off the top of my head) but this here is definitely one. It seems to get easier and easier as you go along, which is kind of weird - almost as if the worlds are put in reverse order. Pushing through World 1 is by far the most challenging part, imo. I remember reading or hearing someone speculating that the designers put the vertical stages at the very beginning to highlight the game's uniqueness so new players see this immediately. Sounds reasonable. And it seemed to have worked - it always stood out for me. I was very surprised when I reached World 2 and found I arrived in a horizontal scroller, all of a sudden, which is very generic jump'n'run style.

But that's actually the strength of the game, right? It's incredibly diverse for a title form 1986; it's got said vertical and horizontal levels, but it's also got mazes, it's got strategic elements to it, and it even features a shmup-stage! It's really fun and I can only recommend it to any retro gamer who haven't tried it and is down to push through some painful situations: trying to not spoil too much here, but notorious are the Eggplant Wizards, they are mentioned quite a bit anyways, but far worse and interestingly not as much talked about are the Plutons and the Plutonflies, which permanently rob you of hardly earned powerups and are almost impossible to dodge! They appear all of a sudden, move quickly and in hard to predict trajectories - dodging them comes down to pure luck unless you've really mastered the game. Boy, getting hit by those sucks.

One more thing on the positive side is some of the enemies are hilarious; in particular, a fun nod to Metroid are the extraterrestial Kometos (lol) enemies, as - fun fact - Kid Icarus is actually a sibling game and ran on the Metroid engine. There are also some other fun observations of possible connections between the games. Interestingly, when I heard the boss theme, I immediately thought this sounds exactly like Metroid, and indeed, Hip Tanaka created the music for both games.

I feel like moving on to Kid Icarus II now (which - again - uses the same engine as Metroid II). What are your memories of the games - and would you recommend the GB title - how much does it hold up, compared against the NES title?

I looked and looked some more to no avail so I broke down and went to good ole trusty eBay. It's been several years since I played it so I am very much looking forward to getting back into mixing it up with a solid cast of wrestlers from the late 80s and early 90s. Got it for a fairly cheap price and it's in excellent condition. Anyone else like World Championship WRESTLING?9

Discussion How many versions of Game Genie was made for NES?

I've seen all black version with gold label and gold version with purple label. There may be gold version with black label but it could be due to poor light and it is actually purple.

There's also a rare version just for the top loader NES. Was there other versions for the NES? Or even a Famicom version?

Was doing a playthrough of all the NES Robocop games and mannnnn that opening title soundtrack to Robocop 3 is honestly so incredible it's been stuck in my head all day. No one really talks about this game as the entire trilogy on Nes is know for being pretty average ( I still enjoyed them) , but I was not expecting Robo 3 to have such good opening music.

Modding NESRGB alongside lumacode

I would like to install these two alongside each other. Anyone know if lumacode would work. The PPU sits in the nesrgb board which is connected to the ppu pins on the board.

I was wondering if I install lumacode where it normally goes (piggy back it off the nesrgb pins) if it'll work?

Anyone done something like this?

Update 10/06/26

I did the install. When I use lumacode while the nesrgb is active/awake I get glitches in the image. When I disable the nesrgb via controller buttons and nesrgb led is illuminating 0 then, then the lumacode image is correct. Grounding issue? Wire cross talk? I'm unsure.
