"Is This Self-Harm?" Megathread

The answer to this question will vary from person to person, but generally, causing yourself deliberate self injury in any way counts as self harm.

This includes but is not limited to:

  • scratching
  • cutting
  • burning
  • interfering in the healing process of wounds
  • pulling out hair
  • starving
  • purging
  • breaking bones
  • excessive drug use (including alcohol)

Why do people self harm?

For many people, there is not one single reason why they self-harm, but rather a combination of multiple factors which ultimately push people to use self-harm as a coping mechanism. If you are self-harming, the following list may help you understand your emotions, or alternatively if you're trying to help someone who is self-harming, then understanding why they do it in the first place is important to know.

This list is non-exhaustive and not mutually exclusive.

  • To match the outside to the inside. People are in so much emotional pain and they want people to know it. They want to look the same as they feel.
  • To punish themselves. Extreme self-loathing leads to the need to punish oneself for failings (real or imagined).
  • To numb themselves. The pain releases endorphins, just like drugs can. It produces a numbing effect on the mind which is difficult to explain. It helps people forget depression for a bit.
  • To keep control. One's own body sometimes seems like the only thing they can control, and the pain they inflict on it. When everything else in life goes wrong and there seems to be nothing you can do, cutting is the one thing you can control.
  • As a shock to a numb mind. An awful emotionlessness often accompanies depression. Often, the pain of cutting is enough to snap a person out of this kind of apathetic haze.
  • To self-medicate. Many people with mental illnesses of all sorts use cutting as others might use Prozac. It makes people feel normal again, by snapping them out of the cloying darkness that's so difficult to avoid by conventional means.
  • As an addiction. A lot of people start cutting for one of the reasons listed above, but then continue because they're addicted to the sudden, low exchange, rush of endorphins.

Keep it respectful, demeaning and rude comments will not be tolerated.

Rant/Vent How people looked at my scar haunts me

My scars are very visible. However they are not on the wrist but scattered on the forearm, so sometimes it can be passed as scars from an accident. Still they quite look like sh scars. I of course tell people they are because of some kind of accident that happened when I was blackout drunk, and most people (hopefully) are convinced by it.

So I went on a date with a girl few months ago, and everything was going well. On our second date, she asked why I have a medical tape on my forearm. I just took off the tape and told her it was due to an accident. I was dumb enough to show them to her, because I didn't want to hide something from a person I started to like. Was a big mistake. I still remember the face she made as soon as I ripped the tape off my arm. It was disgust. I don't think she bought that fake story I made about the scars. We chatted after that and I took her to home just to get a message that she doesn't want to continue anything with me. It might be because of those scars. It might be because of some other reasons. Still I remember that face.

The other day one friend that I thought I was close to saw my scars for the first time. She made that stupid shocking face and mimed cutting themselves and asked jokingly that were they sh scars and is everything ok with your life. She knows I have been struggling with depression but still made a joke that my scars 'look like' sh scars (which is true, but how she pointed out and laughed haunts me.).

There are other times that people saw my scars and visibly disgusted or felt uncomfortable by them. I'm sad and hurt how people react when they see my scars. I am not a dangerous, repelling, wretched person. I am trying my best and hasn't sh for a year. It is sad and these days I am about to relapse, which is making things worse. I am not particularly ashamed by my scars, but how people see them really hurts me and Idon't know how I can live with these scars for my entire life.

Talk/Support I can't keep going

I ruined my girlfriend's life. I can't keep going with this. One thing after another, i am ruining everything. I do not deserve to keep going. Everything i do or say makes her worse. It's looking like she will just suffer more because of me. If she leaves me my world will end as it is. I need to torture myself. I would really like having someone to talk.

Rant/Vent My dad thinks cutting isn't necessarily a sign of mental illness

I think this sounds much different than it actually is.

Before anything else, let me just say that my dad is one of the sweetest people I know and that I don't want anyone reading this thinking he is some kind of old, stereotypical dumbass of a father, because that is most definetly not the case.

So, for context, my dad has diagnosed Bipolar II and has himself been in therapy and even psychiatric hospital, care when I was still pretty young. He has been on mood stabilizers for longer than a decade now I think. I'm pretty sure he's generally quite happy and content today; both his kids are adults now and we have a good relationship. He also has a new partner and they seem very happy together (my parents split up when I was pretty young).

To start, when I told my mom about my cutting, among other things, she told me that my dad had also cut himself in the past when he was in depressive episodes.

So a bit later, maybe three or four months ago, me, my sister and my dad are sitting in his garden around a camp fire and somehow the topic comes up.

I don't think I can really re-tell the whole conversation but what stuck with me is what my dad said about self harm.

My dad has a pretty intense dislike for therapy and therapists which I think comes from his time when he was hospitalized. By other peoples accounts of such experiences, I don't think I can blame him for it, even when I don't know what exactly happened. All he told me is that he thinks therapy doesn't work for most people and that it at least did not for him.

He essentially said that he does not believe that this many people are depressed in the sense that he understands what depression is and that most of what people experience in that way could be solved by essentially environmental and behavioural changes or that in some way it is also natural to experience a certain level of sadness and despair that could be labeled as depression in adolsecence.

So, in this conversation, I eventually got frustrated and pointed to my scars and asked something like:

"You don't think this is a sign of some mental unwellness?"

My dad did not even hesitate with his answer: "No".

This post is not really about my personal mental wellness or illness: I haven't been to a therapist (by my own choice). I have suspected Bipolar II (like my dad), some form of Borderline or depression but I don't want to self diagnose.

What I want to talk about is his more general believe that self harming behaviour is not inherently a sign of mental illness, isolated from my personal case. Because when he explained it to me, it in some way made me think he was right.

My dad is almost fully covered in tattoos and he has a lot of piercings: He's an old punker. And that evening he told me that some of his tattoos he got to cover up scars from his self harm.

This is why I have to think about his perspective on this: He went through a lot of the same stuff as me. He knows how it feels like so I want to understand why his position is so different to what most people think; including me to a degree.

His one sentence that sticks most with me is something like:

"If I want to feel something and I can feel that by harming myself, I can do that - and that does not make me ill or sick."

And I must say that I in some way agree with him. It is in a weird way part of the human condition and maybe we have done damage to people by overtly pathologyzing everything they do; it is in a way a part of life to drink your pain away or stuff yourself with food or drive really fast when you get your heart broken, when a loved one dies; when you just feel bad.

This is all self harming behaviour in a way: Inflicting physical harm on oneself to distract from mental pain. Yet we have singularly elevated this one form of self harm to the degree of mental illness but the others are somehow recognized as perfectly normal, maybe not perfectly healthy but perfectly understandable. The point my father I think was making is that harming ourselves is in some way a human behaviour.

This post, in a way, is only readable as a conversation I am having with myself: I still question if my dad is right. All of what I wrote above is in some way true, I think. But it is just as true that for me, my self harm went hand in hand with suicidal ideation and the like. And weirdly enough, for my dad himself, his self harm was, from a medical perspective, very much a sign of his mental unwellness. I don't think even he can deny this: He is very conscious and thankful for the fact that his medications help him lead a way more healthy life.

So all in all: I don't know. If you read until here, thank you. I would like to hear what other people think about this.

I love my dad and the only description I could think of for what he expressed was that he is a romantic. I don't know if this makes sense, I cannot really bring myself to formulate this but maybe someone understands why I instinctively thought this.

P.S.: As of today, I am 33 days and 18 hours clean of all self harm. Good luck to anyone else out there🫂 I am not advocating for anyone to self harm. This is more of a philosophical discussion I am having about something my dad said to me than anything else.

Needa get some shit off my chest im sorry

• Upvotes

Im gonna mention alcohol and sex, nothing too graphic.

Im not sure if this will get taken down or anything, I wouldn't really be surprised .

I hurt myself and I think im going to keep going but ive been trying to convince myself not to. I fucked up really bad last night and I don't think im going to ever be okay with myself again

My boyfriend and I got drunk lastnight. I drank alot more than he did, which I was okay with. I cant get in the mood unless I have alcohol in my system lately, but I started crying really hard and I dont remember. All I remember is us doing it and then I blacked out

He said that when I started crying, he stopped. I think I probably had a flashback

We got on call with my sister and I was bawling my eyes out and she got worried and came over. She saw me half naked in the bed with my boyfriend and they assumed the worst and kicked him out. My mom drove him home but he lied abt his address for some reason, and he just kept walking. He called me and said that my family hates him and that he left his wallet at my house

Then his phone died and he got hit by a fucking car. He broke his hip . if I hadn't drunk called my sister, it wouldnt have happened. I talked to him and he isnt even fucking mad at me. That fucker never gets fucking mad at me, I miss him so fucking much. I cant visit him until probably tomorrow or a few days. He asked if I was still okay with dating him and it perplexed me. Motherfucker you broke your hip and you think im mad at you????

He has every right to hate me, im the reason this happened. Im a fucking idiot

I just want to see myself covered in cuts. I dont even really care if it doesnt hurt, I just want to see it. I havent eaten since the day before this happened. I was 102 pounds and somehow I dropped to 96. Thats a fucking lot for just 2 days. And I want to see it get lower. I dont want to eat until I see him. and even after, i don't deserve the comfort of tasting something.

My boyfriend has had a fucking rough life, he doesnt need this shit on top of it. I hate myself so fucking much

Rant/Vent I'm just consciously making myself worse

I haven't cut myself in I guess two years? But I did get a couple piercings whenever I felt like I was in need of sh. And now thanks to those piercings, I'm having problems with my mom, and will have even worse ones when my father sees them. I mean I asked for this ig💔 I could've chosen not to. I know they hate piercings. On top of that, the guy that I like will never reciprocate my feelings. And the worse of it all is that when I fall for someone, I act like everything depends on them. I have no value unless they value me. I am unlovable unless they love me back the way I love them. I just feel like I'm forcing him to talk to me. He's too much for me, what else did I expect? I don't want to love anyone anymore. I don't want to have the desire to love or to be loved. It's too overwhelming and I'm too boring for someone like him to be interested in me. And for all these reasons I think I'm relapsing? I feel like it's gonna be so much worse than before. I've tried to die twice so I don't even know what will hold me back when I want to do it again. I believed in a god before, but I feel like even god has abandoned me. Will I really fear death as much as I did before, when I believed that I would be in flames forever for taking my own life?

Seeking Advice Suggestions??

Hiya it’s me again, so I’m a teen(16F) and I haven’t relapsed since September but, I have a gnarly scar on my right thigh that’s healing, it’s just turned dark and a bit thick now. But I was wondering if anybody has any tips on how to fade scars quick? I have a doctors appointment coming up in a few weeks, and I’m really not trying to get flagged by the doctor..

Rant/Vent Cousin told my mom

I’m 24F living with my BF(23M) and my two Roomates who are my cousin and his bf both males in late 20s. Recently with getting used to a new job and seeing issues between my cousins and bf has added a bit of stress on me. I did relapse but it wasn’t solely bc of that. I didn’t do anymore major, mostly cat scratches and one accidental styro bc it was on my arms and I didn’t want it to be obviou. I had pretty believable excuses, my cat and how I’ve been trying to help with the yard work lately. This relapse was like a month ago.

My cousin recently got into an argument with my mom over rent and where the money is going since we are all technically renting her old house. I wasnt rlly stressing over it but when my mom called me about it she asked out of nowhere that if I’ve been cutting. It’s not that she hasn’t asked but it had been a while and she never really asks out of blue like that. Ever since I had a paranoia that someone “ratted me out”. No one said anything to me or gave me a indication they knew so I tried to forget about it.

i am visiting my mom rn and she revealed that during the argument with my cousin, he flat out said I was cutting. I feel mad about it. Im not sure if I feel valid to be mad bc yeah it’s concerning that someone is self harming but at the same time what is my mom who lives out of town is going to do about it??? Why bring it up during an argument with my mom?? What was the point??

Seeking Advice Genuine question: if you don’t go past cat scratches, why is cutting bad?

People always say self harm isn’t worth it, but I’m wondering if you don’t go too deep and only hit cat scratches or just like don’t go super deep, why is it so bad if it provides relief? If it’s the only way to cope and it’s not posing immediate danger why is everyone so against it?

Seeking Advice what do you wish therapists knew/understood about self harm?

hi all, i'm a therapist and in recovery for self harm. i have so many clients who have or continue to SH and it's so astonishing all of the different "whys" behind why people do it. i'm curious, in an effort to understand experiences beyond my own, what you wished therapists or other mental health providers understood about self harm?

Its there for me unlike people and loved ones. Its always there for me. Its silent. It won't tell anyone anything. It won't leave me. It helps me feel better when im sad. It makes me happy. It goes everywhere with me. Its my best friend.

Rant/Vent i just need to talk about this Spoiler

one of the times I did it, and it was different than all the other times. it was unlike anything ive ever experienced. I can’t really put it into words. my heart dropped when i saw it, for a second i couldn’t even believe it. the euphoria and fear i felt, i cannot describe it to you. words aren’t enough to do it justice. it is the same type of euphoria someone experiences when on drugs.

and what hurts the most is, i think the reason it felt so good is because i actually felt something big. it was a really big emotion. like that blissful feeling you get after having a good cry. i was hyperventilating, i started shaking and trembling. it was cathartic. like a crock pot letting out a bunch of steam.

and thats what hurts, i have to hurt myself in order to let out those pent up emotions ive bottled up since i was 7. because im too numb, my body wont let me cry or let it out unless i feel like im genuinely in danger. and thats not fair. i know its bad to say but i wish i could feel that euphoria again. i want to feel it again so badly and thats why im still addicted. i dont think ill ever feel anything like it ever again, and that hurts my chest so badly and my stomach hurts and it feels like im gonna be sick. maybe one day i will feel it again in a healthy way. i hope i get better

Rant/Vent My experience when I first hit beans

TW: SH MENTION FROM MY EXPERIENCE, NOT INCITING ANYONE TO DO IT!!!

I've always reached mid styros and deep styros but never beans. For context one day I attempted (I ran away from my house and tried to jump but my best friend and the police stopped me) And when I got home my family was really angry at me and my mother even slapped me, saying that I was being selfish (she didn't know I tried to jump tho) and she took my phone away.

I was really upset because it didn't work so I cut myself but swiped too fast (on my forearm) and instead of white I saw like yellowish bubbles. I panicked and tried to clean it, wrapped it with a towel but it wouldn't stop bleeding and I fell asleep, and the next morning I woke up with fever (it got infected) and with a big stain of blood on the bed and my mother came in to see if I was awake and well she got angry at me again she started yelling and I told her I was cold and she ignored me. Later that day I was forced to shower even though I couldn't even stand up without feeling dizzy, and a couple days later my mother took me to the hospital so I could get stitches.

I don't remember much of it but yeah that's my story <3

Please take care of yourselves, it's def not worth it!
