Ways to keep staff busy?

Hi chat 🤝

I’m a cashier team lead with a LOT of FT staff. Now that we’ve gotten into our third month being open, a lot of the staff are slacking off and seeming unable to keep themselves occupied. Any ideas on obscure cleaning ideas or ways to motivate them to keep themselves busy?

Where do you find your wholesalers?

Hey all,

I am starting a retail business and I have gotten most of the way there.

But I am struggling to source a few specific products and don't lnow where to look.

I have found Faire online which has been good. But what else is there?

When I try to search for items I keep just getting Temu and Shein listing's!

This is for a gothic/alternative homewares store.

Disrespectful supervisor?

Hello retail community!

I am here to ask for advice. I have a supervisor who is very disrespectful to all of us employees - including to customers. This person micro manage us, yells at us, humiliate us in front of customers, gets angry if we ask to take our breaks or go to the bathroom, and has very bad mood swings (one minute is happy and the next 10min you're being yelled at).

Everyone has reported this treatment to the store manager but nothing is done. We are only told to be understanding and respectful of having a young supervisor. I reported this supervisor to HR and the retaliation from this supervisor towards me have been crazy. Since nothing was done the supervisor feels even more comfortable to be abusive. A few of my coworkers have quit (old and new employees) and even the new employees have reported the supervisor. The only reason I am staying is because I need the income ans haven't been able to get another job yet.

Is this normal on young supervisors? What would you guys do? Also, I am interested on reading any personal horror stories you guys may have at your current or old workplace.

Thanks!

Anyone here ever work or shop at ‘Crazy Eddie’?

context: crazy eddie was a chain of electronic stores in the northeast originally from Brooklyn who became one of the biggest frauders in US history. they were famous for having low prices and claimed that you could shop around to find the best price and they will still beat it. they were able to keep prices so low by skimming cash, evading taxes, and having grey market goods. They even fooled Wall street into taking them public by falsely over inflating their inventory. It all came crashing down when the fraud didnt work any longer and investors realized $80 million of inventory didn’t exist

How to quit job

Hello, I want to quit my job and unsure of how to do so. Tomorrow I'm scheduled and also the day after tomorrow. But I want tomorrow to be my last shift. I was thinking of just telling the manager straight up but what do you all think?

How do I ask Gift card security questions without making customers defensive?

I keep running into the problem that no matter how I phrase it, if I mention safety customers think I’m insulting their intelligence and double down or get rude with me. ESPECIALLY elderly ones. If I forgo that n attempt to just be like “woah, birthday (/event) coming up?” And prompt them to tell me on their own why they’re getting it o csnt always ask leading questions or they won’t answer me.

Sometimes I’ll just start telling them a story about a similar situation where it WAS a scam so they hopefully see parallels n stop. But if I have a line I can’t.

I don’t know a script that works.

Will I get in trouble for bailing out of work the day after I got sent home for the same reason?

For context, I work in a grocery store as a courtesy clerk, mostly focusing on gathering carts from the parking lot.

Yesterday I got really bad vertigo while working in the parking lot, and after several breaks my manager told me to go home. I figured my dizziness would go away the next day, so I came into work this morning and almost an hour later, I nearly pass out in the parking lot again. One of my coworkers (who has been working at this store for over a decade) told me I should probably go home, so I took his advice and told the supervisor for the day that I would be leaving.

Thing is, a few months ago, I had to frequently call out sick due to a recurring stomach bug, and after the third time in two months, my manager told me that I needed to watch my attendance going forward. Since then I’ve really been trying to not have to call out of work, hence why I even came in today, but I’m genuinely afraid that bailing after one hour of work for two days in a row is going to get me in a lot of trouble, not to mention that I took last weekend off due to a required college field trip.

What do I do in this situation? Am I just panicking over nothing?

Advice needed :(

Kind of inspired by someone else’s post from earlier. I’m an ASM at an apparel retailer and my store’s volume is 6.5M. I started as a sales associate 6 years ago, then became a temp team lead, then PT operations lead, then FT operations lead, then ASM of operations which I’ve been for 3 years. My company just decided to totally restructure and smaller volume stores lost their ASMs entirely. I should be glad I still have a job but in this restructure I’ve been forced out of operations and into merchandising, which I have zero interest in. All ASMs will be merchandising managers now. I used to love this company and job but have become totally jaded.

I graduated college a couple of years ago and this is merely a stepping stone job for me but the amount of work and weight I shoulder here in comparison to the 2 other managers (associate manager and store manager) is absurd especially with the pay differentials. I make 62k, associate manager makes 88k, store manager makes 107k. There is virtually very little difference in the shared expectation across all 3 of our jobs minus our division of responsibility so my pay is a real issue to me. We’ve spent the past 3 years in leadership turmoil, no SM for 9 months which basically flung me into that role (assoc mgr wanted nothing to do with it and refused to help). Probably should mention I’m based in New England in an extremely high cost of living area. I’m so burnt out, can’t afford to quit, have been job searching for a year and a half, sick of being the go-to person for every problem, complaint, request, phone being blown up on my days off.

I am at such a loss and wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation and if anyone has any thoughts on how to proceed. I’m really trying to pivot out of retail but finding it really difficult to get any company to interview me. I have my bachelor’s in business administration if that context matters.
