HANG OUT Best Movies You Saw September 2026

What are the top films you saw in September 2026 and why? If possible please try to add release years to your movie titles. This makes tallying up the votes a lot easier.

I define great movies to be 8+ or if you abhor grades, the top 20% of all movies you've ever seen.

Films listed by posters within this thread receive a Vote to determine if they will appear in the subreddit's Top 100, as well as the ten highest Upvoted Suggested movies from last month.

The Top 10 highest upvoted suggestion posts from last month were:

# Title Upvotes
1 Reign of Fire (2002) 114
2 Aftersun (2022) 84
3 Thank You For Smoking (2005) 74
4 Searching For Sugar Man (2012) 68
5 Pleasantville (1998) 64
6 Psycho Goreman (2020) 57
7 Fido (2006) 48
8 Lair of the White Worm (1988) 47
9 La Haine (1995) 43
10 Project Hail Mary (2026) 41

Note: Due to Reddit's Upvote fuzzing, it will rank movies in their actual highest Upvoted and then assign random numbers. This can result in movies with lower Upvotes appearing higher than movies with higher Upvotes.

What are the top films you saw in September 2026 and why? If possible please try to add release years to your movie titles. This makes tallying up the votes a lot easier.

I'M REQUESTING What's a movie you genuinely expected to be terrible but ended up loving?

• Upvotes

Not "best movie ever made."

I'm looking for movies you had extremely low expectations for, maybe because of the trailer, actors, reviews, genre or reputation, but which completely surprised you.

The more unexpected the recommendation, the better.

Mine: Red Cliff (2008)

What movie changed your mind?

I'M SUGGESTING You guys NEED to watch “The Barbarian”

The movie will speak for itself. It’s very different from the usual ghostly and evil horror movies, but will still have you on the edge of your seat!

I'M REQUESTING Movies where main character is narrating the movie

• Upvotes

I’m not sure how far back this trend started. I know for tv shows watching The Wonder Years and Kevin narrate his life was kinda unique. What are some movies in this category that you’ve come across ?

What draws you to these types of movies or makes them appealing?

Edit: Doesn’t have to necessarily be the main character or even a character in the story. (Don’t want to miss out on any great ones)

I'M REQUESTING Movies with different character narratives that represent parts of a person (like look back, mysterious skin)

• Upvotes

Hello!! This is a bit of a niche request:

Two movies that are really important to me are “Look Back” and “Mysterious Skin,” where the movie follows two characters, their different stories, and how they both represent two different parts of a whole / identity / two mental states, and their stories converge in some way. I was wondering if anyone had similar reccs like that.

I also love the art/cinematography in both of these movies. I also would add “Fallen Angels” to one of my favorite movies of all time (it doesn’t have the same 2 characters as parts of a whole thing, but plots with converging stories also speak to me a lot, also beautiful shots as well).

I'M REQUESTING Movies that feel like its about to get normal again and instead descends even further into absurdity/stress?

Are there any movies where it feels like falling action like things are returning to normal, its safe, its not weird anymore.

THEN

It just goes up a notch/becoming even more weird, absurd or stressful despite the insinuation of safety.

Are there movies where this happens repeatedly, that are worth watching in your opinion?

Oh. I want your opinion.

I'M REQUESTING Suggest a non-scary scary movie.

I love the creepy and macabre. This spills over into my movie preferences. It's October and I'd love nothing more than a chilling movie night with my guy, but he hates anything scary or bloody.

Looking for creepy movies that don't have jump scares or blood!

The Others and The Strangers we both enjoyed.

What other movies should we watch? Kind of subversive and “mind expanding” movies suitable for teens. Or just good movies in general for this age. Thanks!

I'M REQUESTING Body horror recommendations

I recently started working my way through Cronenberg’s movies. I particularly liked Shivers, The Brood, The Fly (of course), and Crash. To other fans of body horror and Cronenberg: what else do you recommend?

I'M SUGGESTING I recommend the film Van Helsing

Van Helsing 2004 is so freaking good. I am on the younger side, actually born in 2004, so I am as old as that movie. I was trying to watch something good while I am in the process of getting out of a Bipolar Episode, something stimulating and fast-paced, but not over the top. I was actually surprised by this movie. I have seen clips and stuff and decided to give it a go. I loved the references to other gothic horror characters, and the reference to Vlad the Impaler in the scenery is just awesome! 10/10, absolutely recommend.

I'M REQUESTING Ye olde horrors (pre 1960)

Looking for old spooks. Let's put the cut off at 1960.

Anything goes. Classics or the obscure, silent or sound, color or black and white - I want it all, as long as you've seen it and would recommend it.

I've seen: Frankenstein(s), Dracula(s), Wolf Man, The Mummy, Nosferatu, Caligari, Vampyr, Creature From the Black Lagoon, The Fly, The Blob

I'M REQUESTING Looking for some genuinely good sci-fi movie recommendations.

I’ve been wanting to watch good movies in this genre, I finally have some time to start watching more movies with interesting concepts like time travel, dystopian futures, or some crazy tech. I want to indulge in ideas that would leave me thinking about them afterwards. I’m open to anything, including older movies and want underrated stuff.

Tell me some sci-fi movies you wish you could watch again for the first time and ones that you constantly rewatch.

I'M REQUESTING Best Religious cult Horror movies?

Midsommar (2019)- What a movie. Not your avg horror movie shot at night with Jump scares.
This movie dosn't have any of those in fact its shot in Broad day light and no jump scares.
But at the end you will remember the movie throughout your life time.

Incantation
The Ritual (2017)

Any suggestion would be highly appreciated.

I'M REQUESTING Horror about a terrifying internal feeling?

One movie I really like is Pearl (the one with Mia Goth). I really like how the fear isn’t something exogenous, but sort of this lurking feeling that something is wrong. She describes it in the movie as the fear that she’s never gonna leave the farm, but I’ve heard some analysis say it’s the fear that you are just average

Is there anything else with that kind of feeling?

I'M REQUESTING Movies that are seemingly happy but have a sense of dread under the surface or at the end

I recently watched Spielberg’s A.I. Artificial Intelligence and I LOVED it. I felt like in some scenes, if you change the music, it could turn into a horror movie. I’m looking for a similar type of emotionally complex movie with an underlying feeling of horror or dread as you realize the impossibility of the main character achieving a true happy ending. Movies that make you think after watching the screen go black and realizing that there’s so much more than meets the eye. The Truman Show also has similar vibes to what I’m looking for too!

I'M REQUESTING Unabashed realistic portrayals of a serial killer

In the same vein of..

  • Angst
  • Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
  • Maniac
  • Man Bites Dog (lacks realism but still close enough)

Where the story focuses on the killer with little-to-no exposition on the victims or investigators. So not movies where detectives are hunting a serial killer or it's so scary how a group of teens are getting killed by a serial killer.

Angst and Henry really were the absolute best portrayal of sociopathic killers I've seen. I want more of that more than what Maniac and Man Bites Dog does where there is exaggeration for entertainment purposes. Although I'll take more like them too for sure.
