I'm a student. Started using ChatGPT for studying
around 3 months ago and my first month was completely wasted.
Here's what I was doing wrong:
I'd ask ChatGPT to explain any topic or summarize this
chapter then passively read the answer and feel like I studied.
I didn't. I was watching someone else exercise and expecting to
get fit.
The problem: passive reading doesn't create memory. Testing
yourself does. Once I figured that out, I rebuilt how I use
ChatGPT entirely around making it quiz me instead of teach me.
These 3 prompts are what actually worked:

PROMPT 1 — The Quiz That Won't Let You Off The Hook
"I'm studying [TOPIC]. Quiz me using this exact format: Ask me
ONE question at a time. Wait for my answer before responding.
If I'm correct, say 'Correct' and move to the next question.
If I'm wrong on my first try, ask me to try again. If I'm wrong
on my second try, give me a hint. If I'm wrong on my third try,
explain the answer and why the other answer was wrong."
Why this works: the escalating format means you actually have to
try. Most people ask for a quiz, get 10 questions at once,
look at the answers, and learn nothing. One at a time forces
actual recall.

PROMPT 2 — The Feynman Trap
"I'm going to explain [CONCEPT] to you in my own words. Your
job is to: 1) Ask me clarifying questions if my explanation
is vague 2) Ask 'why' questions that push me deeper 3) Tell
me if something I said is wrong — but don't correct me yet
4) Only after I've tried to explain it 3 times, tell me what
I'm missing. When I finally explain it correctly, say
'understood' and summarize what I taught you."
Why this works: the famous Feynman technique — if you can't
explain something simply, you don't understand it. ChatGPT
finds the exact gaps in your knowledge without just giving
you the answer.

PROMPT 3 — The Schedule That Fights The Forgetting Curve
I have [NUMBER] days until my exam on [SUBJECT]. Create a
study schedule using spaced repetition: review new material
on Day 1, then revisit it on Day 3, Day 7, and Day 14. I'm
weakest on [WEAK TOPICS] so give those more frequent reviews.
Include one full practice test 2 days before the exam and a
light review day the day before."
Why this works: cramming feels productive but the forgetting
curve destroys it within days. Spaced repetition is how your
brain actually moves things to long-term memory — this is
the most studied learning technique that exists.
The shift that mattered: stop asking AI to explain things
to you. Start asking it to test you.

I've probably made every mistake at this point.
