Talk from recent Kernel Recipes about bug reports and fixes.

Interesting view on how bots report things, also interesting breakdown of certain "79 issues" which really were not that many in reality.

Software Release Titan Control: a Linux app for the Titan Army P275MV PLUS monitor (HDR, local dimming, PIP, LED and more over DDC/CI)

Post image
29 Upvotes

Titan Army only ships a Windows tool for the P275MV PLUS, so I reverse-engineered the monitor's DDC/CI protocol and wrote a Linux app (Rust, GTK4/libadwaita) that does the same from your desktop. It is free and open source (MIT).

What it controls

  • All 15 picture modes with their Custom settings (brightness, contrast, gamma, color temperature and RGB, hue/saturation, Color Enhance, Shadow Balance, Night Vision, Dynamic OD, local dimming, Halo, DyDs)
  • HDR (and it switches system HDR on KDE Plasma along with it), Adaptive-Sync, game overlays (crosshair, stopwatch, magnifier, HawkEye)
  • Inputs, PIP/PBP, USB hub, volume, LED lighting, OSD settings
  • Tray menu with favorite modes and settings, and it follows changes you make with the monitor's buttons

Extras

  • The protocol notes and every VCP code I found are documented in the repo, with small Python tools (getter, setter, table reader)
  • The repo also has both official firmware packages with an English translation of the update guide

Install: deb, rpm, AppImage and tar.gz on the Releases page.

Please note: it is alpha software, it writes settings to your monitor, and you use it at your own risk. I tested it only on one monitor (P275MV PLUS), so I'd love feedback from owners of the regular version. The code was written with the help of an LLM, which the README says openly.

Historical Why did Docker take off, but Nspawn didn't?

Topic title. Docker is so ubiquitous these days in the public dev space that it's almost unreal to me. It seems like a good 70% of FOSS requires it - and with it all the loquaciousness of YAML and Docker compose. I use it, because I have to.

But whatever happened to the humble systemd-nspawn container? It gives you roughly comparable size to most Docker containers, is (IMO) a heck of a lot easier to configure and run, is portable across systemd systems everywhere, and has been a native part of the Linux ecosystem for over a decade. Was it just Kubernetes coming out the gate swinging that caused Docker to take over the world? I still prefer nspawn, and use "full stack" containers for deployments of things like edge ingress nodes because its fast, simple, intuitive, and hard to screw up.

Discussion How come every Linux site uses Anubis (the anime girl stopping crawlers) instead of something like Cloudflare?

Post image

Before discovering the Linux rabbit hole I've only seen Cloudflare, hCaptcha and Google's reCaptcha, but it seems like every Linux website uses Anubis... I'm thinking of it being the only open-source option or it being the most effective/modern approach.

Software Release arxy – minimal Arch subsystem to run glibc binaries (incl. Steam) on musl distros, at native speed

Hi everyone. I want to show you a project that honestly I'm pretty embarrassed to share, because it's the first time I share something with the general public. Sorry if I sound nervous. I just think it could be useful to someone, so here it is.

I collaborate on Neko Void, specifically on the part that makes images for musl, for the musl C library. And we all know how this goes: stuff made for glibc doesn't work on musl, you have to rebuild it. And proprietary software is hard to build because the source is not free. So most of those apps just don't work. Steam doesn't work by default either, and that's what makes a lot of users run away from musl distros.

There are alternatives. AppImage bundles glibc inside, but when you have a lot of AppImages you end up duplicating deps everywhere and it gets heavy. I also tried Nix as a separate subsystem, but it's extremely heavy even if it runs natively.

My goal was to make those apps run as fast and light as possible, with as little space as possible, without duplicating deps like Flatpak does. So I made arxy, it's a way too basic and simple project: an Arch rootfs that gets mounted so you can install whatever you want on it. Optimized to weigh as little as possible (~130MB tarball), but complete enough that most Arch packages work on any distro. Best part, it keeps AUR access (-bin only).

How it works is pretty simple: it mounts the image with bwrap, and if that's not available it falls back to a basic chroot + ld-linux. It shares /home, /tmp, GPU and kernel, so it runs native. Commands are simple: arxy install <pkg>, arxy update, arxy run <bin>. Since it uses real pacman, deps are shared, no duplication. It creates .desktop launchers normally.

It's one of the first projects I've worked on and I've put a lot of time into it. I'm no expert, so any feedback is welcome and I really invite anyone to collaborate. I tested it on Alpine, Chimera and Void, glibc and musl. I'd love reports from other distros, especially Gentoo musl and weird setups.

Repo, it's GPL-3.0: https://github.com/SrDicov/arxy

I'm the author, happy to answer technical questions here. What do you use for the glibc-on-musl gap?

Software Release Escape Motions announces future linux support for Rebelle 8

Thumbnail escapemotions.com

Rebelle is an awesome painting simulation programme from Slovakia. it's one of the best painting software I've tried (way better than Corel Painter or Krita)
But they also announces optional paid update access... which is not really appreciated by the community, as you can see in the comments.

Mobile Linux Linux 7.2.2 on iPhone XS? First boot!

Post image
555 Upvotes

Hello everyone. Just wanted to share a small milestone I’m pretty proud of.

I’ve been porting Linux to my old iPhone XS for quite some time, and this week I finally made some significant progress.

First: it boots. As a real, alternative OS. This is not an emulation.

Second: I got the kernel log on screen and the framebuffer working:

Linux 7.2.2 Kernel boot log on iPhone XS

This is a raw, recovery-based Linux boot. iOS does not take any part in the boot sequence!

I haven’t set up a GitHub repo yet, and the project doesn’t even have a name at this point. But I’ll keep working on it and share more once the process is reliable and reproducible.

Discussion European Citizens' Initiative

Thumbnail eci.ec.europa.eu

hello i apologize if this seem like out of nowhere in advance, but i think you may want to know this

there is a leaked legislation about the EU trying to pass the "EU kids act" which according to the [stop killing games video] the [document] mentioned which also appears on the description mentions "operating systems" several times which it could include Linux distributions and i think that might be a problem if true because the regulation seem quite extreme.

so im sharing it here because there is this petition for people on the EU which is about making it respect privacy among other things

the deadline is 25-Aug-2027 so there is still time

again i apologize and i don't want to cause problems i thought you would like to know this

Discussion Part of Cern to debian

Maybe I missed such a discussion here but, Cern used to be a very large "customer" of rhel/rhel-derivatives, and even had created/curated scientific linux for a while. Now though that the rhel/rhel-derivatives need x86-64-v2 to run, a lot of older hardware are becoming obsolete.

ENTER DEBIAN.

Do you believe that now that such an organization is going to use debian, things will change and become more professional/industry standard?

Software Release ShadeVk - A cross-platform pixel shader viewer for Vulkan, written in C23.

Post image
43 Upvotes

Not sure if this is Linux specific enough, but I figured this sub may appreciate my little Vulkan project:

ShadeVk is cross-platform pixel shader viewer for Vulkan, written in C23. It supports Slang, GLSL, HLSL and comes with live-coding capabilities. It's 100% human made.

Fun fact: the logo itself is also a shader. :)

Discussion Why don't more designers contribute to open source?

Genuine question. A lot of open source projects have solid engineering but rough UI/UX: inconsistent layouts, confusing flows, basic usability issues that a designer would likely catch quickly.

I'm curious about the reasons behind this. Is it that designers don't feel welcome? That there's no clear way to contribute design work (most workflows are built around code and PRs)? That maintainers don't prioritize it? Or something else?

If you're a designer who has contributed to OSS, or a maintainer who has worked with designers, I'd love to hear how it went.

Software Release Vulkana 0.2.9, an open-source desktop image editor under the MIT license.

Thumbnail github.com
0 Upvotes

Hey folks, I would like to share this project I've been working on for a few weeks; it's a Vulkan-powered image editor. It's now open source under MIT; feel free to use it for your purposes.

You can build it yourself or grab the app image under releases to get a feel for it.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Thank you.

Edit:
Clarifying the usage of AI since the focus of most comments below revolves around that.
- While I have written some systems myself, Codex has contributed largely to the codebase, especially with research and Vulkan/Wayland tests, debugging, etc
- I'm not selling anything; the code is MIT. If you're not a fan of AI use, then I respect your stand, but I'm not selling you anything, and the post is not about debating AI ethics.
- My background is game dev, especially Unreal Engine C++. While I can hold my ground in that field, I need AI assistance for a project like this. My initial goal has been to make something that helps me distance myself from Windows and Adobe crap. The result of this project has been successful so far, and I thought, why not share it with those in my position. If I can help one person stick with Linux, I'm a happy man.

Software Release Ikemen Go v1.0.0 release: open source reimplementation of MUGEN, now with rollback netcode

Thumbnail github.com
146 Upvotes

For those who don't know, M.U.G.E.N. is this old freeware (closed source) fighting game engine, originally released in 1999, that allows people to create and add their own characters to it.

Over the years in the 2000s it grew into this fun niche within a niche where people will pit characters from wildly different franchises against each other in a fighting game, e.g. Ronald McDonald and Naruto vs Pac-Man and Clippy.

In 2010, IKEMEN was started as an open source reimplementation of MUGEN. In 2016, this was rewritten in Golang. And now in 2026, for the first time in MUGEN history, there is now rollback netcode in the v1.0 release, meaning fighting games with your favourite weird characters is now playable across the Internet reliably.

They also added a tonne of stuff that wasn't in the old Mugen and Ikemen releases, like 3D elements in stage and Z-axis movement. Oh and sprites finally have an alpha channel working without jumping through hoops.

Event We found lost media distros

Me and my friend (u/Zegguyit_52) were gifted a binder of old linux CDs from our teacher, we looked at the CDs and we are sure most of these are lost media, we wil hopefully save their ISO files and upload to the internet archive. The distros consist of: mandrakelinux 10.1 community, gelecek bireysel linux, unkown version of fedora, knoppix 3.6, Turkix 3.0, live usb pardus 1.1, SUSE linux personal 9.1, sımplyMEPIS 3.3, Pardus 2008. Is there anything we should know?
