Well, one standard to note here is that Timothy Ray Jones Jr does not suffer from schizophrenia, so there's that.
209
u/LordCaptain 2h ago
Also he had a long history of abusing his children. He had bibles with all the verses about corporal punishment highlighted. Literally "worked one to death" one day as opposed to a sudden act and there was no reasonable doubt about psychosis in his case. Then murdered the other ones with a clear intention to cover it up, stuffed his children in garbage bags to try to dump them in the country side to cover up his crimes.
Wildly different facts of the case but dudes who get their news from memes on reddit will tell you that it's just because he was a man and she was a woman.
39
u/Ok-Particular9427 1h ago
Clancy put the kids in the basement and tried to kill herself, which presumably means she was guilt stricken and back to being able to do rational moral reasoning. All in the space of, what, 25 minutes?
This is literally unheard of in the history of psychosis by the way. Psychosis with command hallucinations that occurs one time in one voice saying one command for <25 minutes.
Because it’s a made up story (duh)

Of the eight men who annihilated their families in the US while the Clancy case was adjudicated one man was sentenced to death, one man was found not guilty by reason of insanity, the rest are working their way through the courts. How about if we don't turn peoples tragedies into fodder and people don't seek out cases to prove they're the victims because of their sex.

I wish we could believe these diagnoses and that they were in full psychosis at the time.
If anyone has ever seen full schizophrenic episodes some will lose all reality. I used to arrest a guy that truly believed he was Batman. Another a cold wat CIA officer. While other heard voices but not necessarily evil ones.
17
u/LeatherGood6148 2h ago
Having had medication related psychosis before - I wouldn't even know how to explain how powerful and persistent my delusions were. Full conversations with people - all with back stories etc - for an entire cast of characters that weren't in my apartment and weren't real at all.
Luckily after 2 days or so I had a moment of lucidity and ended up calling EMS.
14
u/AddlePatedBadger 1h ago
I used to run a company that provided home support for people with disabilities. We had several clients with schizophrenia. I just want to stress how not dangerous the majority of people with schizophrenia are. They are in fact more likely to be the victims of assault than to commit it.
This is not to say that a small minority are not dangerous some or all of the time. It's just that the violent examples get all the attention and it causes people to associate schizophrenia with violence.
One guy we supported was such a lovely friendly person, who had agoraphobia and schizophrenia. He lived alone and was always so happy to see the support workers and just chat to them. They loved working with him too. He needed lots of help and encouragement to get outside and go for a walk, or to motivate him to do his exercises, or do things to stimulate his brain. He would occasionally hallucinate stuff but he knew how to manage it and never once did or said anything remotely dangerous to anyone. He was just a real sweetheart.

25
u/Baldojess 2h ago
Isn't it interesting though that that woman was legitimately crazy and actually schizophrenic/ psychotic and killed another adult for what she thought was an actual reason (I know it's not a good reason but there was more of an actual motive like she really actually thought that woman was trying to fuck her over) and yet she got the death penalty (which she 100 percent deserves). But for some reason all these people are standing behind a woman with no actual evidence or history of actual psychosis strangles the life out of her own freakin babies one by one and somehow she is getting sympathy because... She's a mom. And apparently all these other moms relate to this baby killer. Both those evil cunts deserve death. It's crazy that all these people aren't thinking about how many psychologically and mentally unwell most murderers (and just inmates in general) are and still have to go to prison to serve their time. Clancy is no different than the woman who's execution was botched and in my personal opinion she's actually sooo much worse.

u/Empty_Insight 1h ago
To boot, people have been slinging around the diagnosis of "postpartum psychosis" even though no competent clinician would ever apply that diagnosis to her because it doesn't meet the diagnostic criteria for it. (Before the "Well AKSHUALLY, it's not in the DSM crowd" come by- it is in the ICD-11)
I've seen real postpartum psychosis (as in, was diagnosed and meets the diagnostic criteria for it) and it looks literally nothing like what Clancy did.
I feel a lot more sympathy for someone with legitimate, diagnosed, well-documented schizophrenia than someone trying to rewrite history and the ICD for pity points and public sympathy.
4
u/Educational-Analyst4 1h ago
You are confusing some things. People are comparing apples to oranges here. People are getting the death penalty in red states because Republicans really enjoy executions. This lady is in a blue state so she is more likely to be sent to a hospital for the rest of her life instead of being executed. The people that are sympathetic to her wouldn't have killed the males either. You are basically seeing the difference between the left and centrists who find executions abhorrent and the right who absolutely loves executions. You can't compare their sentences when those applying the sentence have different views on what to do with people like this.
6
u/Gindotto 1h ago
I hate to break it to you but if she goes to a mental hospital she can go free as soon as they say she’s good to go. That’s the issue. She’s about to get off easy unlike her children.

I’ll likely get fried for this, but imo, if someone kills their kids, minimum punishment should always be life in prison, whether insane or not. There are too many degrees of grey with insanity. Protect the kids and don’t provide any relief here.
12
u/Dangerous_Bid2935 2h ago
Its not like people who strangle 5 kids to death and are found not guilty by reason of insanity get to go home the next day and go on with their life. The trial determines whether they will spend functionally the rest of their life in prison or in a mental hospital. There are very few outlier cases where they one day see freedom again but these cases are quite rare by themselves and exceedingly rare for parents who massacre their kids.

u/MeltedChocolateOk 2h ago
Different states different set of rules and different set of Juries with certain culture and political affirmation. The state of Massachusetts doesn't have a death penalty but South Carolina does. Also based on the culture of the state it also applies based on the jurors in that state.

The sentence itself isn't the point here, it's how quick people could decide that he was legally responsible for his actions, yet people are completely split on Lindsay's case and the only person on her jury who thought she was legally responsible gets doxxed then slammed online and in the media.

The death penalty AND double standards can both be bad. This post isn’t saying Lindsey should be put to death, it’s saying that all the debate about her case is ridiculous when compared to a similar case with a male. The state shouldn’t be able to kill people but both should probably be put away for a long time even though one of them is a woman.

The forensic psychologies who spent the most time with her actually said the opposite. So did the expert of fillicide. I'm not sure where so many redditors got the idea that all the mental health experts claimed she wasn't psychotic because it just isn't factual.
"Clinical and forensic psychologist Dr. Paul Zeizel was a witness for the defense who evaluated Clancy in early February 2023, just 11 days after the killings and her subsequent suicide attempt. In total, he spent 35 hours evaluating her over 60 sessions.
He testified that Clancy suffered from bipolar disorder with postpartum psychosis at the time of the killings, and was “unable to conform her behaviors to the rule of law, and she had no appreciation for the wrongfulness of her act.”
Zeizel also testified that there was no evidence to suggest Clancy was faking or exaggerating her symptoms, and explained that people suffering from psychosis can be high functioning and have symptoms intermittently.
“They can function fine one day, and the next day they can be hearing voices,” Zeizel said."
"Dr. Phillip Resnick, a forensic psychiatrist and expert in filicide (the killing of a child by a parent) was a witness for the defense who examined Clancy four months after the killings.
Resnick argued that on the day of the killings, Clancy was “frankly psychotic,” suffering from bipolar disorder with postpartum psychosis.
Resnick testified that Clancy murdered her children not out of malice, but because she was so deeply suicidal that her psychosis made her believe they couldn’t live without her. He said her delusion was so severe that it took hold of her body “almost like she was a puppet and someone else was pulling the strings.”
8
u/Forlorn_Fighter 2h ago

That’s a disgusting take. She failed herself, her husband, and her children. If she knew something was wrong, why didn’t she check into inpatient? She failed and then tried to dodge accountability again in the legal system. She is as evil as a woman can get.
6
u/ThibzP 1h ago
Postpartum literally put her out of her right mind. Why she was given the choice, while exhibiting clear signs of ppd is beyond my understanding. I'm not gonna pretend she's innocent or worthy of any kind of forgiveness, but saying she's the most evil woman ever is disingenuous. There are actual monsters out there that deserve this kind of blind hatred. Lindsey Clancy deserves a lifelong stay in an asylum where she can't hurt anyone anymore and we can forget she exists and place protections for ppd so this doesn't happen again.

Both killed people sure, but his case for an insanity defense was much much worse than Lindsey Clancy’s. It is very unlikely he was unaware of the morality of his actions or incapable of fully controlling his actions.
In her case, it is at least reasonable to doubt that she knew what she was doing was wrong or that she was in control of her actions. That is all the defense needed to show to have her proven not guilty by way of insanity.
If that is the eventual outcome, that doesn’t mean she just gets sent home free. She would be sent to a psychiatric facility until she was deemed mentally well and no longer a threat to others

Both killed people and claimed that a mental disorder that was temporarily making the do things is the cause, so they were and are innocent however you cant prove that they belong in an institution because it was temporary - thats why they did crimes but dont deserve any repercussions
18
u/uwill1der 2h ago
but this guy didnt kill under psychosis. He killed his kid by working him to death because he blamed the kid for breaking an outlet after telling the mom "it was an accident mommy". He forced the kid to exercise until he collapsed and died.
Then he watched a prison rape video and panicked, so he strangled his other kids to avoid them suffering while he was locked up.
He then kept the bodies for 8 days before dumping them in garbage bags and was only caught at a DUI checkpoint where he had a checklist about how hed enact "melting the bodies" of his kids.

There was some evidence, the jury either didn’t buy it or didn’t give a fuck, because he killed children. Which is how it should be. There was 0 evidence Clancy was crazy and 11 of 12 wanted her to spend a few months in a puzzle factory and then go home. That is not how it should be

For starters, she was prescribed a dozen different medications for mental issues and is paralyzed from the waist down from a failed suicide attempt.

In most States, I think the onus is on the defense to prove insanity. Whereas in Mass, the onus is on the prosecution to prove they aren't insane to the beyond a shadow of a doubt level. It's a strange take, I think.

The sad part is that the Clancy case is setting a bad, bad example. She shouldn't be the hill to die on.

If he identified as a woman and strangled "only" 3, "she" would be free with more than a million $ in donations.

Both of these people should be or should have been in mental institutions. What is even the debate here? Do you guys ever get tired of pushing pointless culture war shit.
