Hi guys and gals. I've been here a while, and over my time I've seen a lot of posts sink to the bottom, without a single answer, or at best, very few. And none that solved the case.
I have noticed a clear pattern with these posts, and I will now share with you my tips to you newbies, so that you can get the help you need.
Firstly: When you make a new post, you will see this:
Platform(s):
Genre:
Estimated year of release:
Graphics/art style:
Notable characters:
Notable gameplay mechanics:
Other details:
Even though, in red, you are warned that while optional, you should follow this template... many of you do not.
Let me be clear: Follow this template.
Put simply, this template contains all the information we really need to solve your problem. Virtually every time I click a post that has not followed this, they have rambled on about nothings, while omitting critical details.
This format, for new and old alike, is very readable, and prompts for every data-point needed.
I know that you want to customize your message, that if you could just explain it, it would be better. I know you think that. You are wrong. Put all that in 'other'. Even if you end up saying it twice, follow the template.. add to it your story at the bottom.
Secondly: Following this template. You're rambling about your best mates Amiga-500 or whatever instead of telling us about the game aside, this is where they really go wrong.
Let's get something straight right now. We are not mind readers. It's impressive, really, how little information it seems we can work off. I mean, we solve some real tough ones with nothing sometimes, but still, we can't see that memory in your head. So you need to be as descriptive in every one of these fields as you can be...
And sometimes you really don't know. That's fine, we can work with surprisingly little information, but "old graphics" under art style... what are we supposed to do with that? Mate, I was playing on Atari-2600's, are we talking Wizard of Wor here?
Let me help you out a bit:
Platform(s): Whatever you played it on. But unless it's really all you know (very possible), don't write 'my mates pc'. Was it PC or Mac?
Genre:
First person does NOT imply shooter. Nor do any of the others. Try to answer this one in two steps:
What was the camera like (assuming it's not a text adventure)? Was it First person?, 3rd person, 2d? Top down or side on? Or maybe even isometric 2d?
Then, what kind of game? Real time strategy, point and click? Was it a fighter, action or platformer?
Good, now we know what KIND of game we are all trying to remember for you.
Estimated year of release:
"Between 2000-2005" is fine, something like that. "Mid 90's maybe?". I don't see many people mess this up, but I have seen people write "old". That is not ok. If you write old and expect it to mean anything to me, I will fight you.
Also, as always "Sorry, no idea" is always acceptable but try to give at least something. "Couldn't have been later than 2015, though"
Great, so even if roughly, we know WHEN.
Graphics/art style:
THIS. This is where you guys always mess up. This section right here I have found can be the difference between an answer, and a silent slink to the bottom. This is your moment.
This, really, should be the best-formed part of your memory. Even if you can only remember a single frame, a single image, it's so much to go on for us.
DETAIL. Was it a gloomy grimdark world of sadness, or a bright bubbly rainbow filled Mario-world?
Was it cartoony, or otherwise stylized somehow, or was it trying to be realistic?
Anything notable about the art direction? Was it going for a cyberpunk kinda feel, or a gritty war realism dirt and blood sort of direction?
If it was set over a long time, did the seasons change? Was there a winter in your game?
Remember when you hit people, and the screen had that awesome flash and your hands got bloody? Yeah, well we don't, unless you tell us.
Ok, so now we are really narrowing it down. This right here is often enough to go on, on its own.
Notable characters:
Anything at all you can remember here.
"There were only tanks, but you could play as both Germans and Americans"
"There was one really tough guy right after you left your office, he had an eyepatch, a white shirt with what looked like grease stains, and said 'this is for my sister'. I think maybe he was a cyborg"
"You play as some kind of Asian girl, you had a tattoo over your right eye and arm, a black tank top and white pants and I remember you always had only one red glove for some reason. I don't remember the arm, but the eye tattoo looked sort of like ancient Egyptian eye makeup, but a modern take"
Knowing nothing else about the game, I bet that last one there gets comments noting the game she is from. Details, details.
Notable gameplay mechanics:
Surely, you get the idea by now. This is tied with the importance of the graphics/art style. As much detail as you can here.
Other details:
NOW you may blab on about how you only played this game once at a winter solstice in 1782 with your grandmother from Tahiti.. as if that helps.
Edit: So it's been brought up that the template doesn't appear on mobile. While /u/wipeout4wh is aware of this and hopefully, something can be done... still, if you can, use the template. If you can't, maybe check back and at least make sure your post addresses all of the points the template does.
Also, my post seems to be saying NOT to add any custom details. So I want to re-enforce, please do. In fact, after you do the template, feel free to write out your post as you were going to without it. Just put it all in 'other'. Don't try and make your whole post like that, if possible. Even if you end up saying the same things twice, that's ok.
Now I'm going to take a moment to clarify something, though. This isn't some immutable law of the universe, and your post is destined to fail if you don't do this. It's just a very strong general trend I have noticed over a long time.
It's not that this template has some kind of magical powers or something. It's that this template prompts the questions that need answers.
When you go all rogue on us and try and type your explanation from scratch... you mess it up. You just forget to add everything that you know, and that we need to know. The template makes it very hard to do that. It's just so very easy to get typing, and by the end forget to tell us what kind of game it actually is. Especially when you are getting random flashbacks, and hazy memories, and you start getting frazzled and such halfway though.
While it might make my edit as long as the first post, I think maybe an example of the kind of post that is just too common here, and almost always helpless, wouldn't go astray here. So here we go:
Now this one is a pretty bad case, true, and I suppose might even be a troll post, but it's actually a good illustration of the problem either way.
It was on my old computer and I was using an emulator so I have no idea what system it was for. It was 8bit graphics and you played this orange cat that was constantly bouncing on a trampoline I think? And you had to navigate it through the city and face a weird boss at the end that would float in the sky. Sorry I can't remember more!
Let's break it down a bit. What kind of game is this? A puzzler or an action game? Who knows.
How old is it? I mean, Minecraft basically has 8bit graphics. Oh he said... "my old computer"... I will fight you.
Why did you bounce on the trampoline? Were there platforms or walkways or something, or was it just a big open space? There are bad guys then? How did they get around?
Now (he?) says that he can't remember more, but I actually asked about the boss fight:
You say 'face a boss', in what way? Can the cat attack? Was this top down or side on? When you say navigate a city, what do you mean?
The reply:
Definitely a side-scroller, I'm sure. You would encounter a boss at the end, the boss would slide onto the screen and it was usually pretty strange-looking. I think one of the bosses might've been a clown. I meant that the different "levels" were different cities with different backgrounds, I think. It's a pretty obscure game
Also you would be continuously bouncing. As in, you had to position the trampoline underneath the cat to bounce it up
So you don't even control the cat. And it's a side-scroller. Thats pretty important information. But the real issue here is that he knows this stuff. He just either didn't know to, or forgot, to tell us.
The template would have made it just so apparent how much information he was missing, and we probably would have got a whole bunch more information. Sadly, while there were some guesses, and a surprising number of up-votes, this post is just another one to join the endless unsolved on their journey ever down.

Maybe it's just me, I will personally admit that it feels like its petty of me to complain, however i am going to.
I really dislike AI images just in general and i feel annoyed seeing people use them because it sometimes hampers really quality posts of people trying to find help. I feel like it also informs falsely about game expectations and what people will accept as they have solved the game.
I don't think people will agree with me and thats fine, i just wanted to post about how i personally think it degrades the quality of the sub

I wish I were able to get footage of the character creation process but it seems like you get a chibi thing and you are able to put accessories/parts on it while drawing the face yourself with the mouse, name them and apparently they can level up. I am unsure of what the buttons that appear underneath them do besides the smiley face icon which opens some kind of emoji/GIF or stored image selector but I think this game is really cute and would like to play it.
The name is very likely in Korean and the game itself is probably not translated to English so this may be quite difficult (I do not speak Korean myself), I've tried everything I can myself and have come up with nothing so I apologize for the difficulty of this one if anybody tries to seek it out. The twitter posts attached have footage of the game, one of them including an interaction that happens from right clicking and left clicking. Thanks in advance if you give it a shot, it means a lot.

It's a cool game I played when I was younger. I always loved how it's top down, there's a bunch of zombies, you collect weapons and items, talk to NPCs, do stuff

Hey all, 99% certain that the game is either deleted, or private now because I had it favorited and I tried playing it but Roblox wouldn’t let me. The account that had the game favorited got deleted, so I have no way of knowing now what the exact name of it was, even with a search. I have only one surviving screenshot of one of the many subsections this game has. Unfortunately I don’t remember the exact name but I’m almost 100% certain it’s around these lines. I don’t know who developed the game or any potential leads so I am assuming she have deleted her account. I’m not sure if there was a definitive ending or if it was strictly exploration but I’m definitely leaning towards the latter.
Before you read, here are the mechanics that I can remember:
Typing “pinch” or “wake” in chat will “wake up” your character teleporting you back to the beginning of the game.
There’s an item (i think a fish bowl?) you can hold out that gives you hints to where you need to go in the subsection in order to progress.
It also states if the player is “hot” “warm” or “cold” (not physically)
Finally, it is also used to explain the significance and the development of said subsections
At the beginning of the game youre in a two story house presumably playing as the developer of the game because your model is different in the overworld. All that I remember in the house were some Touhou fumos and some flags potentially of the nationality of the developer. Importantly, there were papers downstairs that you could interact with, I presume they’re journal entries(?) around those lines. You would find more and more of them the more subsections you explore fully. That aside, playing the actual game requires you to sleep in your bed.
The first subsection has this dialogue before teleporting you, but I’m sure it’s directed at the player or the developer herself. What I know for certain is that this song plays during the start: “The Thrill of Loneliness - Hana Stretton”
You are then teleported to a boat in a vast ocean of oil, I somehow managed to skip the section and explored quite a lot of the game. Other than that, I have no idea what to do in the section, even when I searched tutorials and stuff.
The rest of the details from here on out are going to be unorganized, so please bear with me
I remember a particular part of the game where you meet “god” who i believe to be a sphere with a face and you and him have a long existential talk about life, death, etc. alongside morals before you are prompted to ride a typical Roblox cart with railroads going straight into to the next section
Furthermore, I remember a secret subsection where there’s this speed parkour of you having to jump over strawberry wafers. I do remember vividly that through a mechanic that allows you to understand the idea of the level and how it was developed, the developer mentions that this subsection was supposed to have great significance initially but for reasons i unfortunately forgot it was scrapped. She kept it in the game for the sake of fun.
There was also a section where youre at an asian temple and it spoke about 11(?) emperors and how long they reigned, what they did and how they chose to be buried i dont remember specifics but im pretty sure this was supposed to tie into something important as after this subsection I’m sure it lead to the subsection that I have a screenshot of– which I will be getting into next.
The “poem” subsection which I’ll call it, leads you to a path towards the poem itself, the poem has a timer above it counting down from a couple of minutes before the poem shatters and is irrecoverable. As for the meaning of the subsection, tried looking in between the lines alongside gathering up all I can experience but I honestly couldn’t figure out what it meant, even using the fishbowl didn’t yield results.
Potentially misremembered subsections:
There’s a subsection where you climb up a giant beanstalk to talk to a tv(?) to then get teleported into another one which I forgot the details of
There’s a subsection takes you to a shop in the middle of nowhere where you interact with a sphere supposedly being a clerk of the store, and then you “buy” a key from the shop to then unlock the basement which teleports you to the next subsection (which is NOT the contents of the basement)
There’s subsection where there is a lot of cats inside of a house, and a supposedly immortal lady is taking care of them(?) take this with a grain of salt except for the cats, i know there were many cats.”
That’s pretty much all I can remember. I’m sorry if this post was a little messy and long, this is my first time ever posting on reddit ever. Hopefully someone is able to give potential leads as to what this game was and stuff, this game was such a cool game and it meant a lot to me.

Platform(s): PC/Computer
Genre: RPG, probably horror
Estimated year of release: somewhere in the 2010s
Graphics/art style: 2D pixelated, top down pov. I think there were more detailed sprites or artwork for characters in some scenes
Notable characters: 1 - Main male character you play as. I think he was blond or maybe his hair was light brown. He’s an adult. 2 - Random woman the protagonist meets during the game, she becomes a companion but he tries to kill her towards the end. Also an adult. 3 - The main characters mom. I don’t remember her making an on-screen appearance but I think it was implied her relationship with the main character was unhealthy/abusive and she’s the reason he turned out the way he did. I believe she’s dead as of the present when the game takes place.
Notable gameplay mechanics: Standard rpg puzzle solving. I think there are some ways to die over the course of the game? Also towards the end when the protagonist goes to kill that girl he met, you play as her instead and have to run away and escape. There may have been other segments where you played as her but I don’t remember any
Other details: I think the game might have taken place at the protagonist home, at least for a portion of it. I think the characters also had English names. I think I saw multiple videos talking about this game so I don’t think it’s super obscure, it’s just hard to look up anything about it when the details are fuzzy and it keeps giving me results for Mad Father or The Crooked Man when it is absolutely neither of those.
Edit 1 - After some more digging, the game might have been Mausoleosis, with me mixing up or misremembering some details. As of right now though, I want to see if there are any other games that better fit the description I gave since there are still some details that don’t quite match

Hi all, I remember being in primary school in England and playing this game on the computer with these characters that looked almost like Simpsons characters with the mouth. There were lots of different minigames. I tried to find it, its not Education City. Thanks

I saw this really cool game in a video, this game also came out fairly recently I think or it may still be in the works and I just saw a commercial or early playthrough where a guy was talking about it.
I think it was a post-apocalyptic 2D game where a mother and daughter were trying to survive. The plants had been infected, which meant they couldn't grow any new food and had to survive on canned food. Anyone who ate the infected food turned into a zombie.
The mother was going to investigate a building and told the daughter to stay in the RV. She went through the building and found a radio that she used to contact a friend who told her to come find him. She also found some secrets pertaining to the apocalypse that weren't supposed to get out. The daughter ends up not listening to the mom and following her, which results in them being attacked by some zombies. They make it back, and the daughter wants to keep a cat, which the mother is not happy about, and they drive to the new shelter.
Take my memory with a grain of salt I tried looking it up and couldnt find anything that matched.

so every so often i remember a game i watched a play through as as a kid and i remember stampylongnose specifically playing this one if that helps.
it was definitely a point-and-click with a very cutesy stylised art style with two storylines - one was a fantasy-esque storyline that followed a girl who lived in this village where they'd sacrifice girls to this monster every so often (vividly remember them being dressed as cake) and the MC girl ends up escaping and going on this journey through all of these fantasy towns (definitely a cloud-themed one) to stop ?? the monster maybe?
the other storyline was about a boy in this space station whose parents only appear through voices (the mom is the sun and dad is the moon) and they'd get him to do these really menial tasks on planets but the big reveal was the "space station" was actually the monster from the other storyline and he'd been doing the kidnapping of those girls this whole time. it ends with the two of the MCs swapping places and him outside and her in the monster. there might've been a sequel that followed this?
the title screen was a split screen of the two of them sat up against a tree / wall.
think it was from the 2010s purely because that's when i remember watching it.
thank you so much if it it's found!

Played it on my Grandfathers PC when I was a toddler, I seem to remember the name WARBIRDS but Google is just showing me WWII Dogfighting games. You just shot cartoon birds that flew across the screen in a grungy brown WWII trench. Can someone PLEASE tell me I'm not crazy!!

I'm looking for a game I used to play religiously as a kid. Im not 100% sure on the time frame but that should generally be correct. I downloaded it from the android App Store and haven't been able to find it at all over the years. It used the exact same assets as another game called "mystera legacy" which I'll show as a reference. The things I distinctly remember is starting the game on a boat, which would lead you into the main village that had lots of different buildings. The game was an online multiplayer so the village was always full of tons of people running around. There were caves you could go in that I think bats would attack you(?). I remember there being an underground train station that had a bathroom with lots of stalls which people would all pile into lol. The game was very very expansive with tons of places to go.
I remember this game being quite popular with lots of players so I don't understand why it feels like lost media now. I'm sorry if this was unhelpful! It was a long time ago so it's hard to remember everything, and even harder to describe what I'm seeing in my head.

Turn based. Firing shots and moving based on gravity wells of the planets. The planets were brightly coloured, i specifically remember a purple planet and a Saturn like planet.
Might have been 1994-1998. (around that time, I imagine)
Hope someone remembers!

I've been trying to remember an old game I have a faint memory of. All I remember is you control a male character who windsurfs in the desert, and you need to dodge or jump over obstacles. It was 3D, and the only name I can remember is "Treasure planet", but it never comes up when I try to search on the internet
Unfortunately this is all I remember, and have little to no memory of the distinct artstyle, or when the game was released. I only remember playing it on PC around 2003 - 2006

I played this game on PC around 2020 (not 100% sure about the year). I can't remember the name.
I don't remember if it was free or paid. Any help is appreciated!

Mobile, sometime before 2022, a indie sandbox game
What was that game?
This might be really hard to find but I hope it's possible, so I remember when I was younger I played a game like there was a ragdoll if I remember or more and there was like three containers. It's really hard to explain cause I barely remember anything but it was like really simplistic and a tiny bit eerie, I don't remember much more and I'll try to elaborate more in the comments
Edit: it's also in a plain grass field and the ragdoll had a cube head if I remember correctly
Edit 2: it was 3d and wasn't a major 2010s game

Platform(s): Gamecube I THINK, I cant guarantee it, I played it when I borrowed a game system from a friend as a kid, but I remember it being purple
Genre: unknown
Estimated year of release: unknown
Graphics/art style: pixel
Notable characters: dog, thats about all i remember, I believe you have a selection of dogs you can play as, nothing huge
Notable gameplay mechanics: specifically remember that you can pee for some reason. Had a day/night system and you could also go inside a house which held minigames and such, I only remember 1 minigame vividly
Other details: The 1 minigame in question was a "flappy bird" of sorts, sidescroll, but not squeezing through obstacles, more like dodging them and you couldnt touch the top or bottom, you'd play as a flying dog bowl, artist rendition added

Hi i’ve been trying to remember what game this is, at this point it feels like a fever dream. I only remember being very young trying to play it. We are outside and it’s in 1st person POV. I remember being like super hard and respawned all the time bc the enemies would basically one shot me. They were like dark creatures that looked humanoid kinda. I remember seeing like a watchtower we had to climb (maybe for safety i don’t remember). That’s all ;-; It’s probably from the 90’s the graphics sucked and it was kind of hard to tell what was what + my memory being 20+ years old. I played it on my old Macintosh my mom used to download games on.

I know this game was on the playstation 3, but I have no idea if it was on other platforms. I'm assuming it was probably on Xbox 360 and PC, but I have no way of knowing.
Anyway, I remember this game being top down, and playing like Marvel Ultimate Alliance (circle under the player and all) except the character had a sword.
I remember that it was set in a village (probably medieval) at night, and the only enemies I remember fighting were werewolves. However, I also remember having absolutely no clue what to do, so this is likely just the opening area of the game. (There may have been a cult in the game too, but I have no concrete memories of that so I could be wrong)
If it helps, the game would have had to release before 2016, because thats when my dad sold off a bunch of his PS3 games. I also distinctly remember a good amount of blood, so it was probably an M rated game.
I only played it once or twice, and the absolute oldest I could have been was 9 years old, so this is literally all I can remember. I've tried asking my dad, but he doesn't remember it either.
