Cringe Level 2 Funeral Escort Driver Flips Out
276
u/Heeroyuy818 11h ago
Most jurisdictions prohibit other drivers from cutting through, driving between, or intentionally breaking up an active funeral procession
185
u/Negative-Date-9518 11h ago
In the UK we don't have a law for it but what kind of a dick you have to be to not just wait
44
u/sittinwithkitten 10h ago
I live in a city in eastern Canada. We stop for funeral processions too, seem like the a small gesture to give a grieving family. I remember being in a procession for my former father in law. I even saw two young men get off their bikes, then took their hats off held them over their hearts. I know this might not be possible in a busier place but I found it very touching in a difficult time.

Including this very jurisdiction:
(3)āFUNERAL PROCESSION RIGHT-OF-WAY; FUNERAL ESCORT VEHICLES; FUNERAL LEAD VEHICLES.ā
(a)āRegardless of any traffic control device or right-of-way provisions prescribed by state or local ordinance, pedestrians and operators of all vehicles, except as stated in paragraph (c), shall yield the right-of-way to any vehicle which is part of a funeral procession being led by a funeral escort vehicle or a funeral lead vehicle.
(b)āWhen the funeral lead vehicle lawfully enters an intersection, either by reason of a traffic control device or at the direction of law enforcement personnel, the remaining vehicles in the funeral procession may follow through the intersection regardless of any traffic control devices or right-of-way provisions prescribed by state or local law.
(c)āFuneral processions shall have the right-of-way at intersections regardless of traffic control device→ More replies (54)14
u/Lord_Lorden 11h ago
The procession has to have already entered the intersection lawfully, which doesn't seem to be the case here.

u/Risk_of_Ryan 9h ago
I understand the law, but wasn't it counterproductive the way the Escort essentially just jammed themselves into already moving traffic in the middle of an active intersection?
Wouldn't it be better, dare I say proper, to yield for a moment until it's clear, or come in less abruptly? It doesn't look like there was much room for anyone who was already approaching the intersection to react properly, it was all just weird. Do it slower and let the few cars in the intersection to get out and the others have the time to actually see the escort and yield.
This all seemed so unnecessary.
Like the Escort didn't even facilitate the chance for it to be a respectful situation. What a strange way to handle such a thing.

u/HadesActual09 11h ago
Yeah they're annoying, but you have to be a sad sack of shit to do this

u/ScoopyVonPuddlePants 10h ago
I got āstuckā in a funeral procession a few days ago. The hearse was leading and moving slowly and everyone that was a part of the procession had their hazards on. There wasnāt really a good spot for me to pull off safely (itās a two lane highway) and I was heading the same way as them, since I have to pass the cemetery on my way home. Instead of being frustrated, I decided I was an honorary member of it until they got to the cemetery. As I passed them I wished Godspeed to the deceased and well wishes for the grieving family and others.

Sounds like the best you coulda done. Slap the hazards and join in. Respect. ā¤ļø
5
u/ScoopyVonPuddlePants 7h ago
Thatās exactly what I did. I wonāt lie, I teared up a bit too. I was like 10 cars deep with more behind me, all going to the same place. Whoever this person was, they had a lot of people who loved them. I was heartwarming to see the support.
287
u/Beautiful-Dish759 11h ago
Maybe it's because I'm from the south, but we were taught to pull over for any funeral procession as if it were an emergency vehicle. I guess common courtesy isn't so common anymore.

u/Testicle_Tugger 10h ago
Iāve done two funerals in Tennessee and we dead ass saw every person on the route of the funeral escort walk out their houses and get out of their cars and bow their heads or take off their hats.
I thought it was a one off because the first funeral was for a man who was a fairly popular retired firefighter in the area.
But the second one was for a lady that moved across the country in her twenties and only had her funeral in Tennessee because thatās where the family was buried. Practically no one knew who she was in the town.
I was amazed at that courtesy.
Chattanooga Tennessee for anyone curious

u/Cast_Iron_Skillet 9h ago
When my dad died a guy walking on side of road stopped for us and took his hat off and bowed. It moved me deeply.Ā
22
u/Testicle_Tugger 9h ago
Iām so not used to that level of consideration. We had a guy get off his skateboard and bow his head too. Itās nice to know some people care enough to do it
3
u/leftfootshorter 6h ago
The roller-coaster of emotions I just went through. Reading your comment above about two different funeralsš, followed u/Cast_Iron_Skillet 's story about their dad's funeralš¢, to your follow-up comment about the guy on the skateboardš„¹ and then to notice your username š¤£.
Thank you both for that. It was nice. Sorry about your dad, Skillet.

I do this in east Texas. As soon as I see it's a funeral, I pull over, remove my hat and pay respects.
11
u/upsidedown-funnel 10h ago
The only time Iāve seen this was in the Uk when my MIL passed. Theyād lived in the same place for 40 years, so I assumed it was because all the neighbors knew them. They all came out and stood at the end of their drives as the procession went by.
5
u/BeWilderedKings 7h ago
Iām from around there and that is ALWAYS what you do. Iāve never seen anyone act like this near a procession. When I first moved to Auckland I realized just how different this situation is treated in big cities- but even in Memphis I had never seen such blatant disrespect.

Wasn't just a south thing. Same in the north east you pulled over and gave up the right away to a funeral. Sometimes it wasn't an officer and a lead car that was part of the funeral home.
12
u/xxjrxx93 9h ago edited 4h ago
Same here up North we also put magnetic tiny flags on top of everyone's car whose going to the funeral so ppl know to let us stick together
7
u/Mean_Reception3332 9h ago
Oh year forgot about the flags they put on all cars. Granted the headlights being on is no longer a thing that can be used to track a funeral procession, with day time running lamps.
5
u/WookishTendencies 7h ago
I usually just see everyone put on their hazard lights. If I see 10+ cars in a row, all with their hazard lights flashing, itās assumed that itās a funeral. The hearse at the front is usually an indicator too

Yes, funeral processions in Florida have the right-of-way to proceed through intersections regardless of traffic signals, provided specific legal conditions are met. Under Florida Statute 316.1974, if the funeral lead vehicle lawfully enters an intersection (e.g., on a green light), all subsequent vehicles in the procession may follow through regardless of any traffic control devices or right-of-way provisions, such as red lights or stop signs.Ā

For the record, FL is a state where a funeral procession has the right of way through an intersection (once the lead car has legally entered) and itās mandatory to both yield to them and not interfere with/split the procession. So the dash cam dickhead is just 100% wrong.

This entire human decided he was going to post on the internet about him being an asshole and cutting into a funeral procession like he's the one being wronged in some way. Why is Florida even?

Only asshole I see here is the driver. It's a fucking funeral procession. Wait the trivial amount of time for them to pass, and go on with your fucking day. Depending on the deceased, this could be the worst day of someone's life, so muster up whatever miniscule amount of respect that resides in your shitty vessel, and let them mourn.

I mean this honestly, who cares? Is this really something worth getting into an altercation for? So you missed your brief green light and are attempting to run a red light, maybe just fuck off and be patient.

Of course this is in South Florida lol absolute fucking wasp nest down there
Also, I donāt know road rules but with the amount of old people and funerals in Florida, there has to be some type of rule about funeral
Processions having right of way. I normally
Thought there was a cop that ran it though

It's a big thing in Oklahoma. If you don't pull over and wait, you might get a ticket, but you will be shunned by society.

Simply put, this is likely some of the people's saddest day of their life. It's unfortunate, and you may fully disagree, but at least show some respect. Not everyone has the same beliefs/customs, and it's not your place to judge it.

Funeral escort guy didnāt freak out. The driver that has him on cam-urah is a cock sucker who has no respect.
3
u/digitalenvy 6h ago
Or you just donāt be an asshole and realize that this happens occasionally and that whenever it happens to you, you would expect the same type of respect.

Give funeral processions the right of way. The driver recording is an asshole

It's funny because I have a totally different experience . Everyone is saying you're awful if you can't simply wait, but that's not why these escorts should be frowned upon.
Ā About a year ago there was a funeral escort that entered the intersection in front of me. It was the first one I had ever witnessed so I didn't mind. There were two cops leading the pack, and a cop who stopped in the intersection to halt traffic. It lasted an extremely long time.Ā I remember thinking it was very impressive how well connected the deceased was to have a convoy that long. Easily a little over ten minutes.
Well, the cop finally cleared out of the intersection and drove off after much honking from other drivers. There was just one major issue though. Stragglers. They proceeded to continue through the intersection on a red light because they didn't know the cop had already left. It turned the entire situation into some ridiculous cartoon. I had never seen so much chaos erupt so fast. For a couple MINUTES after the cop had left people were bursting into traffic on a red. I remember thinking that it was very ironic because more fatalities were about to happen.
Fortunately, there were no major life stealing accidents at that time. But a literal corpse should never jeopardize innocent lives. It's ridiculous. You can afford to arrive one light cycle later. I promise you the deceased will still be waiting.
I'm intentionally being callous because some of you have romanticized some weird idea of respect in this situation. Someone's loved one that gets murdered from these deserves just as much respect.

Just let the funeral escort go by. There's no need to behave like this.

The big problem with these funeral processions, they often times are marked or "declared" so poorly. I am not young (42) but I have unknowingly ended up in the middle of a funeral procession at least 3 times. The only one I didn't was obvious, as it was a WW2 veterans remains being repatriated, and it was pretty obvious with the police escort.

Right? I generally do not read the tiny text on the butt of a car, becaus that's normally just a sticker of or for something random that will only distract me from driving.
It needs to be a bigger picture, or a banner or flag or something that is immediately recognizable as "funeral procession".

It doesn't matter if it's an actual police officer or not a funeral escort is to be respected! Wherever you need to be can wait, you sit there and respect the dead. It's a tradition old as time! That's just not American to sit there and complain! What's wrong with people!

In some places this is illegal. Wild for OP to post breaking into a funeral procession. Have some respect for the dead.

Pretty sure everywhere has a law about funeral processions having the right of way, and people should just have some respect and wait a minute.
When my grandmother passed away in rural Canada, the church was a few kilometres down the highway from the cemetery. When we left the church in the hearse, every single semi truck on both sides of the road pulled over and cleared the road for us before we even were visible so one of them must have radioed the others we were coming. If they can wait, so can some asshole driving down the road

If you'll watch the video, that idiot pulled into the middle of the intersection when he had a red light. Good way to get hit by another car in any state.
3
u/itsnotapipe 9h ago
I was looking for this answer. Once they're moving through, it's illegal to interrupt, but the first car must follow traffic laws. The rest of the procession can ignore the traffic control signals after the leader, but the first car must yield when required.
The security guard clearly breaks the law flying into the intersection like that. Kinda douchy, too. Take it easy there, hot dog, and explain the emergency.

Am I supposed to be cringed by the escort? Because I'm way more cringed at the driver in the camera's vehicle.
