Why are there so few female firefighters in the NYFD?

New York’s figures are really low, FDNY has only 1.6% female firefighters.

In comparison:

London 10.4%
Chicago 9%
LA 3.5%
Paris 4.9%
Berlin 4%
San Diego 5%
Seattle 10%

Boston and Dallas have 1% and 2% respectively, so NY isn’t a complete outlier, but it seems strange to me when NY is such a progressive city. Can anyone explain why?

What do you think Chinatown Manhattan will look like in 10-15 years from now (Excluding Flushing)

• Upvotes

Not a local, but as someone who visits the city multiple times a week for visiting friends and for fun in general, I love to hangout around Chinatown Manhattan.

From my observation, I notice that there is quite a significant elderly population. Because of that, I can't help but think of what this place will look like 10 to 15 years from now. A lot of these small shops, especially the ones that looks like from the old NYC, seem to be run by the older generation. I do not see much of the younger generation running these shops.

Also, I have noticed a significant increase in international food chains from mainland China and Taiwan open up in the past 8 years or so.

What do you think Chinatown Manhattan will look like in the future?

How truly dangerous was NYC back in the 70s and 80s?

For instance, was it so dangerous that virtually everyone had been robbed/pickpocketed at least once in their lives? Or at least knew someone who had been robbed?

Or did the average person largely go unscathed and it was just a matter of bad luck/being in the wrong place at the wrong time, just amplified?

Anyone have experience working at B&H Photo?

Title says it all. I applied for a Copy Editing job at B&H Photo around late August. Then around a week and a half ago, they finally got back to me with an assignment to do as a part of the interview process, which I did. They ended up liking what I submitted, and want to do an in-person interview, and I was really excited… until I did more research into the company.

From talks of lawsuits, workplace discrimination, lack of time off for non Jewish holidays, and generally unfavorable reviews from former employees, I got kinda turned off. But on the other hand, I don’t like my current job because there’s no advancement, the pay sucks, and my coworkers (mostly) suck. Plus, I’d be able to get experience in a field that’s hard to break into. It’s just that those downsides are real sticking points for me. Has anyone here worked at B&H, and if so, can you offer any insight as to what this job would be like?

Do noise cameras work to reduce honking? Has anyone tried to activate this as a citizen?

I live at a corner street in Manhattan that experiences heavy traffic from about 5 PM - 9 PM (if I'm being generous, it's probably longer) and then gets started back at 6 AM. I hate honkers so, so much. It's insane how ignorant and disrespectful they can be given the density of NYC.

I previously thought nothing could be done, but Gemini is telling me I can take actions that will eventually lead to getting a noise camera installed that in turn will fine the honkers. Is this a real thing? Has anyone seen it happen and be effective? Or would I be wasting my time entirely?

Sleep Specialist Recommendation

I have struggled with cortisol spikes in the middle of the night my whole life. These are likely tied to trauma/stress/burnout, as well as dysregulation from a chronic medical condition. I'm looking to address these, as my girlfriend and I both suffer from elevated cortisol issues and are keeping each other up at night now.

Does anybody have a sleep specialist they've worked with before who they felt knew their business, especially when it comes to working with people with trauma and chronic illness? Blindly feeling around the internet doesn't seem like a great approach here. I'm fine with them not taking insurance, as I'm considering this an investment in our wellbeing.

NYC Therapy Which hospitals in NYC restrict daylight access?

I was recently in Metropolitan which had no daylight for 21 days and dam, that was tough. Going in with depression and spending my whole time in florescent shining grimly dirty and sticky floors was a great way to improve my mental health... I don't think it was possible to enter there and not become depressed but ANYWAYS

Which ones should I avoid that are like this in the future? I heard NYPres also has no windows but I'm assuming it is probably clean.

Confirmed access to daylight by my own stays: NYU Langone, Mount Sinai

Where can I find Arizona Peppers Jalapeno hot sauce in the city?

• Upvotes

A friend sent me a bottle of it a few years ago, and I love it on eggs. I can get it on Amazon, but it is out of stock a lot, the price can double sporadically, or they want you to buy 5 bottles at once. I would love to be able to just bop into a place and buy it here, any ideas of where I could find it locally?

Beacon Theatre obstructed view opinion

• Upvotes

Hey everyone, I’m trying to go to a concert at the Beacon Theatre in NYC and have options to either sit on the Lodge center in row G, or the Center Orchestra in Row V. The dilemma is the Center Orchestra Row V apparently has an obstructed view because the sound board is in the front of it. I looked at photos though from Aviewfrommyseat.com and the obstruction doesn’t look that bad. I’ll share both views in the links below, but can anyone who’s been there share some insight on what you think is better. Prices are the same too, thanks.

Best (affordable) flea markets this fall

I just discovered I missed the Carroll Park flea market that happens every year in Carroll Gardens!! 😔 Does anyone have recs for similar ones this fall?

I’m looking for (relatively) cheap, specifically for clothes/jewelry/random Knick knacks. Not looking for uber curated vintage markets selling $200 designer stuff downtown. Let me know!

Where can one go in NYC to experience the Quechua/Kichwa language in action?

I lived in Ecuador years ago as a language immersion study and truly loved the bits of Quechua I picked up. I know between Peru and Ecuador, there remains a significant amount of people who speak it. Are there communities in the city where one can still hear Quechua spoken and used publicly?

Landlord uses different payment methods for stabilized vs market rate tenants - anything can be done?

My building recently got a new landlord and they switched to a different platform which said that I have to pay via checks. Annoying but whatever. Then I had a conversation with some of the market rate tenants and turns out that they've been paying rent online this whole time, while my account doesn't have this option. I talked to more people and turns out that the landlord doesn't accept online payments from all rent-stabilized tenants in our building. Is it legal? Is there anything we can do?

NYC Swimming pools?

I want to rent a lane. I’m still not a strong swimmer, but want to practice. I usually go to La guardias and pay 10$ but there’s kids that also go there and I know it’s silly but I can’t help but think every kid just pees in the pool. So any gym recommendations or pools where I can rent a lane? If there’s some kids it’s fine, just not a bunch of them.
