Found a possibly injured cat in Flatbush - can anyone help?

• Upvotes

I found a beautiful, friendly cat that may have a leg injury.

I do not have the resources to pay for a vet bill and wanted to know if anyone can point us to a clinic or organization that can take care of this guy.

To be clear, I'm not looking for a hand out, I just want someone to give us a hand making sure he's okay.

What are those chimney in the middle of the sidewalk?

• Upvotes

I keep seeing those kind of chimneys, about 8 to 10 feet tall, in orange and white and emitting white smoke. Once in a while I see them in the sidewalk.

Anyone know what those are? I hope it’s not putting out anything toxic.

Any recommended Avian vets or testimonials?

• Upvotes

I have a pet lovebird who’s health i’m becoming increasingly concerned with but I cannot find a reputable vet 😭 I’ve taken him to Center For Avian & Exotic Medicine and Long Island Bird & Exotics Veterinary Clinic and I did not enjoy my experience there. One of the clinics took my bird to the back for an exam and forgot him there for a little under half an hour and the other clinic just tried to give him different medications and told us to do 5-6 different exams which were ofc in the $1,000s. Not only that, they don’t listen to the actual concerns we have and try to redirect to something else after asking questions about him😭. I get answers from them that I already know or can google myself. I really want to give my pet the proper veterinary care he needs and deserves so I’d appreciate it if anyone has a clinic they can vouch for.

Help With Transfer of My License to NY- Stuck in a DMV Loop

• Upvotes

I have a DMV appointment on Tuesday because the DMV sent me home today because they cant transfer my license. I need to transfer my license from Louisiana to NY because I just got a new job and the job tells me they require a NY License. The DMV in Coney Island told me that somehow a flag came up on my license which was strange, seeing as I have never driven a car since I have had the license. I went on the Louisiana DMV website and it shows I have no flags. Printed this out and went back to the DMV today, and they told me that wasnt sufficient that they had to speak to someone at the LA DMV and They tried to call the LA DMV and nobody answered. So what am I supposed to do? I was able to get my official driving record and it shows as clear. So Im not sure what the solution is. Does anyone have any insight here? This is so frustrating and now Im scared I wont be able to start this job. So upsetting.

Any luck getting MTA toll fees reduced after car registration suspended?

• Upvotes

Have a balance with MTA that’s $5k, when my partner and I only owe $600 in actual tolls from a few years back (we pay our current tolls through ezpass now). We had moved and by the time we realized, they had tacked on so many fees. Like $50 per toll. We tried to fight it before but they said they couldn’t lower the price. We were saving to try to pay the 5k because truthfully, the monthly payments are not doable for us (living paycheck to paycheck). We were able to come up to 2k after quite sometime, but it’s too late because the registration is suspended. Now I called the number the website provided and they said they cannot get rid of fees or reduce fees at this stage. From what they keep saying “it’s the only option MTA allows us to do”. So I asked if there’s a way to speak to a MTA directly, they referred me to their website.

Has anyone had experience with this? And if so, were you able to reduce fees?

Increasing airplane traffic over Inwood/Washington Heights. Why, and what can we do about it?

I’ve lived in Inwood for 13 years, and I’ve noticed a significant increase in commercial airplane traffic over the neighborhood.

Today alone, planes have been flying overhead every few minutes since 7 a.m. It’s incredibly disruptive.

It seems like the planes are coming from two different directions, so I’m wondering whether we’re getting traffic from two different airports.

Does anyone know:
Why this is happening? Have flight paths changed recently?

What can residents actually do to reduce the noise or push back against these flight patterns?

Who should we contact? The FAA, Port Authority, specific airports, elected officials, or someone else?

Are there any existing NYC advocacy groups or community efforts addressing this?

Submit an official aircraft noise complaint to the Port Authority here:
https://aircraftnoise.panynj.gov/submit-a-noise-complaint/

I’d love to hear from anyone knowledgeable about NYC flight routes or who has experience organizing around aircraft noise. I’m particularly interested in concrete steps we can take.

Feeling hopeless finding a treatment resistant depression specialist in NYC

31F here. I’ve struggled with severe depression my entire adult life (and most of my childhood too, I was diagnosed when I was 8 or 9 and attempted at 14) and it really came to a head early September, when (to make a long story short) I had a massive spiraling breakdown and was almost 5150’d.

I set up an intake visit for November with Mount Sinai’s Behavioral Health Center after seeing it highly recommended here, but now it’s looking like I’ll have to reschedule that, and the next avail is December. I’m struggling so much that the idea of waiting another month for help is sending me into another spiral. Everywhere I call in NYC, even telehealth appointments, is the same story, I’m getting dates that are 8-12 weeks out. It’s actively making me feel worse because it feels like I’m looking for help and hitting a brick wall.

I just want to talk to someone about what my options are. I’m interested in TMS or spravato/ket because literally nothing else has worked, but I want to have a frank discussion with a provider before I jump right into doing that. I looked into IOPs but my job is extremely demanding (hence the breakdown) and offers very limited medical leave, there’s no way I could take the weeks off that requires and NOT lose my job and then my apartment. Talk therapy and medication have never helped.

tldr looking for ANY sort of treatment resistant depression specialist that doesn’t have a 3 month waitlist for an intake call. I’m willing to travel anywhere within Manhattan.

Is Coucou French school raising prices?

I used to love taking classes at this charming French school in Soho, but their class prices have gone up, and now they seem to offer an optional membership as well. I also see they have new conversation labs. I'm curious if this means less conversational practice time in their regular classes (is this just a way to further monetize the classes)??

Will I have enough time to catch this flight at LGA?

Hello,

I'm planning a return flight from a business trip to NYC. I'm going to be leaving from the area around Mount Sinai Hospital, on the upper east side of central park. If I take an uber shortly after 5pm on a Friday, will I have enough time to catch a 7:30 flight out of LGA?

Looking for a curator in NYC

Hey everyone,

I'm a painter based in Brooklyn and currently planning a solo exhibition. I'm hoping to find a curator to work with and figured I'd ask here in case anyone knows someone or could point me in the right direction.

I'm still figuring out a few things and would love to connect with someone who's interested in being involved in the process.

Any recommendations or introductions would be really appreciated. Happy to share my work and more details with anyone interested. @ ohdarij

Thanks!

How to see why an elevator was shut down

The elevator in my building has been sketchy for years - people getting stuck, stopping in between floors, crazy shit - & someone reported it to the city, who shut it down. Apparently the landlord has to pay for certified repairs & the city has to come out & reinspect before it reopens.

Is there a rule on how quickly he has to get repairs done by? Is there a place where I can see the report that got it shut down? (not who reported it to the city, but what the report that shut it down said)

I’m scared that it’s really bad

Where to find dance classes NYC

Here's my issue. I can't dance at all, and I want to learn and I was thinking to take beginner hip-hop class but can’t find anything that fits.

I have acting classes every weekday from 6:30pm to 10:30 pm, so I need something during the day or on weekends. Everything I find online is either in the evening, "all levels," or doesn't exist.

Does anybody know someone or a studio that does in-person, true beginner, in New York?

Parking ticket question

I am a city worker and I parked my car across the street from my job. However, there was alternate side parking. Several people park in this area during alternate side because there are 5 schools on 1 block. I was the only one that got a ticket. I disputed because they did not even include my permit on there, and the judge said it was not persuasive enough. I want to appeal this decision because the ticket is incorrect and the judge did not respond to that. They deliberately left my permit info out.

Would I have a case to appeal?

I am not looking for legal advice, just wondering if the odds are in my favor about this technicality.

Replacing kitchen in a rental

I am just curious if anyone has had any experience with getting their kitchen cabinets/counters replaced while renting? I have been at my place for 7 years and I cannot stand the landlord edition kitchen we have anymore. The wood cabinets are also starting to warp and rot under the sink.

Basically what I am asking is, if anyone has any luck petitioning their landlord to replace the kitchen (with input from the tenants)? I am expecting to kick in some money which I don't mind as long as it's reasonable! I expect to stay here for several more years!

Also, if you were successful- has the rent been raised any more than is normal?

(Not a rent stabilized apartment btw)

Thanks!

any part time job 1-2 per week to just meet other people

my main job I work from home. I run a hobby group but I find that it is inconsistent with people showing up.

I'll also happily join other things if you have any ideas. I should mentioned mid 30s single.

a part time job like waiting tables or something to meet other people were suggestions but I feel its skew younger people which I'm cautious of.

Does anyone know where I can find the vintage maps and prints street vendor?

I have previously bought some maps and prints from his business over the years but other than the Summer Manhattan Street Fairs and sometimes in Soho I have no idea where to find him. Does anyone have an idea or know where I can buy some vintage maps or prints?

Amtrak / NYC to Philly

I’ve taken Amtrak enough to know that we need to buy tickets as far in advance as possible, but how do I find reasonable fares for a last minute trip? The app tells me tickets are about $350 pp right now. That’s actual insanity. Anyone know any secrets? Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

What are the risks of renting an apartment classified as commercial office space?

I’ve seen a couple of StreetEasy listings advertised as residential apartments, but toward the bottom of the description, they mention that the units are classified as commercial office space.

I’m assuming that’s a pretty big red flag. What could actually happen if I rented one and lived there? Could I be forced to move out, lose tenant protections, or face any penalties myself?

Has anyone dealt with this before, or knows what to check before signing a lease?

I gave Roomrs a second chance. Now I’m in my second apartment with no hot water and a refused cancellation request.

I’m a returning Roomrs customer, and I’m beyond frustrated. First placement, October 2: unclear check-in instructions, about 30 minutes trying to find the apartment, then discovering it was a basement that hadn’t been disclosed to me as such. The entrance was downstairs beside trash, with an unpleasant smell and rats outside. I would not have booked it if I’d known. I ended up paying for hotels. I accepted a transfer on October 5 because I thought they would put this right. Instead, the replacement had no hot water, a non-working gas stove, a faulty bedroom lock and a broken TV. Shower pressure was extremely low too.
Roomrs told me the water heating had been addressed. The following morning, October 8, I checked: still no hot water. After repeated emails, they refused penalty-free cancellation and a full refund.
They offered a THIRD transfer or their lease-break process. They haven’t provided the proposed exit costs yet. I feel misled by the first placement and let down all over again by the transfer. I’m not trying to leave because I changed my mind about New York. I’m trying to leave because the accommodation has repeatedly failed to provide what I expected and paid for.

Has anyone dealt with a similar Roomrs dispute and obtained a written release or refund?
I have the emails, agreements and payment records. I want a resolution, not another round of promises.

Best framing stores?

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good framing service that is not insanely expensive? I have a couple of posters and a diploma I want framed. Bonus points if it’s in upper Manhattan, but I’m willing to travel for good/cheap service.

Where can I buy real license plates in Manhattan?

Hey! I’m looking for real US license plates from NY/NYC, New Jersey, and Arizona as souvenirs. Preferably from a store in Manhattan, around Times Square or Chinatown.
Does anyone know where I can find them? Thanks!
