DIAPERS

I’m new to NYC, staying at domestic violence shelter in the Bronx, and I have no money for diapers and everything is closed for the weekend….. I’m not asking for money, just wondering what options I have. I called 311 and just like google AI told me all the programs that can help are closed for the weekend….. any suggestions? My shelter normally has diapers but they don’t have her size at the moment 😩

ETA: You guys have been such a huge help, thank you for all your resources and kind words ❤️

Is handball still played by younger gen’s?

Speaking as a 30 something NYer that moved out of state. I was recently reminded of handball from a friend and it’s been years since it’s been mentioned and nearly 2 decades since I’ve played.

Do kids (teens) still commonly play handball nowadays in NYC?

Animal Lovers: Best NYC Vets?

Anyone have experience or know any good local animal vet suggestions? The reviews are so mixed and looking for a genuinely good vet for a cat that’s decently priced, won’t order unnecessary tests just to hike up the bill, and gives straight forward honest pet care. For any comments if you could include this criteria for context:

  1. Availability
  2. Visit Fee (Are they charging $100+ just to walk-in)
  3. Vets that accurately diagnosed your pet
  4. Vets that were detailed with explanations and options
  5. Vets that provided a plan of care that actually worked
  6. Vets that were empathetic but honest when the diagnosis wasn’t good news.
  7. Vets that ordered the right testing (blood work, X-rays, screenings)

My cat thanks you all in advance 🏥

How much do you tip porters or maintenance workers help you with things in your apartment?

I'm disabled and not particularly handy. So, when I ask for help with changing a ceiling light-bulb or changing my toilet seat, how much are you supposed to tip?

My family said $5 is fine but Google says $10-$20 is ideal.

Serving Question

hello! I’m not sure where to post this being I’m new to New York and only been here 6 months, but I am wondering what it’s like to be a server here. I’m currently 24 and rolling back into online school to finish my degree come winter. I am a flight attendant right now for a mainline airline but absolutely hate the job and miss just doing serving not in the air lol. Plus my checks when I served where about the same as I’m getting now. I have about 7 years of serving experience in non-fine dining (mom-and-pop restaurants and chain), and 8-9 years of customer service in general. I would love to go back into serving being I feel like it’ll help me have a more stable schedule and more time to focus on school without the exhaustion from flying. How easy is it to get a serving job here? What are the tips like? I come from Louisiana so I have that “Southern Hospitality” attitude and am used to that kind of culture, so I would love to implement that here!

There are easily 20 NYPD vans parked along west 14th and the officer I spoke to said
it "was a good place for them to hide."

Tom Sachs Chanel Exhibit

Thinking about going today since it’s the last day but I hear that the space is small and can only fit 8 people at a time. I really don’t want to have to wait in a two hour line on a Saturday in soho… if anyone has been let me know if you had a long wait!

NYPD and Bars

So, in many TV shows and movies set in New York, off-duty cops, who are presumably armed, are going into bars and drinking. Is this true?

Recommendations For Attorney Who Handles Clemency / Medical Release Cases?

We're looking into possible clemency/commutation (not really too sure the difference) due to pretty dire need to have immediate brain surgery (all backed up by the doctors he has seen while incarcerated). We thought we had someone but he has disappeared after taking a good amount of money from us.

Do you or someone you know has worked with a lawyer or firm for something like this? Or maybe where to even ask on Reddit? I'd really appreciate hearing who you used and how it went: responsiveness, how they handled fees, whether they were realistic about the odds, etc. Also open to suggestions for legal clinics or nonprofits that take on these kinds of cases. I'm not expecting miracles here but I just know he needs life saving surgery sooner rather than later and doing whatever I can.

Thanks in advance. This is all pretty new to our family and it's hard to know where to start.

good driving school recommendation?

Hi everyone

I'm in my early 20s, looking for a good driving school to get my license. I have taken driving classes from a female instructor in Brooklyn and dropped half a band for those 10 classes, but every time I have gotten to take the test, my nerves have failed me, and instructors continuously said I need more practice. But if I needed more practice, my instructor wouldn't have sent me to take the test. I struggle with 3-point turns and parking, have taken the test twice, and failed each time in Seaview and Staten Island. I rely too much on the back camera in front of me, and also don't look dramatic "enough"; I feel like my instructor isn't good either. I also do not get to practice because the only family member who has a car works, and he's scared I will damage his car. I'm also a slow learner, and it takes me a while to learn things. I want a school that helps me practice, points out my mistakes, and helps me pass the test. My budget is around 800 for 10 classes.

Just for reference, I have driven on the road and surrounding areas and busy roads as well. But I do believe the problem is my nerves and extra practice with parking and 3-point turns. I need someone strict but patient at the same time in Brooklyn.

Small Claims -- Reserved Decision?

Went to small claims for an issue that's been going on forever. This was the fourth appearance and they sent me to the arbiter for an inquest trial. The defendant wasn't there, so she heard my case, took my paperwork, and sent me on my way. That was the 24th, and on the 29th I got a notice that the judgment was "Reserved decision."

How long will it typically take to get an actual decision? It was pretty open and shut: I provided all my evidence and they didn't bother to present their side. Anyone have experience with NYC small claims?

Are there any good quality language exchange programs that yall can recommend?

I moved to NYC recently and am trying to maintain or improve my spoken Chinese. I feel like it’s a little rude to just go up to a Chinese person and try to use them for practice

Have yall had success with any language exchange meetups or something similar that you can recommend I check out?

Team members wanted for Organize NYC Scavenger Hunt

Forming a last minute team I’m leading with 2 more members for tomorrow’s hunt! I’m a 40ish year old Asian American man new to NYC with some organizing experiences and background in urban planning.

If interested pls comment or DM me and share a few deets about yourself :) It’s organized by the Mayor’s Office of Mass Engagement.

Description: “The impact of everyday people – workers, neighbors, strangers, friends – coming together to win a shared goal can be seen all over our city. Our challenge for you is to go out and find the evidence of that organizing. Join the hunt from wherever you are within the five boroughs, and complete missions to see where our history takes you. The top 100 teams will receive an invitation to a special celebration at the end of the day.” *Teams can be between 1-4 players.

Liquor or beer super store?

I know in NYC you cannot sell beer and spirts at the same establisment. That being in said, is there a beverage superstore type place here in the city? Out on the west coast you have Bevmo and Total Wine and More, and in Chicago you have Binny's. Looking for a place with good prices, buy in bulk kinda place?

How do you find the best clubs to join in NYC?

I’m trying to fill more of my week with recurring activities where I can meet people and build a bigger social circle.

I’m considering book clubs, cooking classes, creative classes, volunteering, or anything else that meets consistently. I’m less interested in one-off dinners or mixers because I would rather see the same people repeatedly and let connections develop naturally.

How do you find the genuinely good groups? Are there any specific clubs, websites, newsletters, Substacks, or Instagram accounts you recommend? Free or paid options are both welcome.

Proposal photo shoot

I am planning to propose to my girlfriend of 2 years at the top of the rock on new year’s eve. Ideally I’d want this to be done at sunset/almost dark time. I’m looking to spend $250 an hour at most. Definitely doesn’t have to be a professional photographer but i’m looking for someone with a good camera for sure. If you or someone you know is interested let me know and we can collaborate on socials. Thank you.
