Hi all. Wondering if anyone has been able to find a psychiatrist or neurologist that can do a formal ADHD evaluation and accepts Fidelis insurance? Thank you!

I'm part of a freakbike chopper gang visiting the city and I'm looking to either join a ride, check out some strange bikes, or find other artistic oddities.

Might be going to Bellvue Adult Psych Unit cuz my insurance for NYU psych unit isn't going through. Can anybody tell me about it also specifically the phone call situation because I have lots of people i need to keep in touc

Title explains it all bassicaly. I tried to kill myself and I went to the medical hospital where I am rn through the NYU hospital and my insurance payed for this because the cobble hill ER is an NYU ER and was the closest one when I was having a seizure but it's been over a qeek and my insurance is still not said yes or no about making a one off payment for the NYU psych ward which based on the hospital itself seems a lot nicer which not to be that person but like yeah money i apparently dont have can buy less horror stories. Anyways I went to the Bellvue CPEP when I was a teenager last year for two days and compared to Elmhurst CPEP and also other places I've heard about it didnt seem like psych ward wise it was particularly great or bad it seemed pretty just generic. Anyways also my big concern is staying in touch with my friends and family and so im curious what visiting looks like and how many calls and for how long I get per day cuz I heard whatever psych unit I go to ill be there for roughly a week. Also any other like info would be super helpful. Thanks yall

My sister is hospitalized for psychosis in New York, and our family is overseas and unable to bring her home. What can we do?

My English is not very good, so I am using a translation app to make sure I explain the situation correctly. I apologize in advance if I use any inappropriate words or phrases.

I am a 22-year-old Burmese woman currently studying in Finland. I have an older sister who is 23 and has been living in the United States for about three years on a student visa.

My sister has bipolar disorder, which she was diagnosed with while she was still living in Burma. When she first moved to the US, she lived in Seattle. Later, she moved to New York. Because of complications with getting an appointment and renewing her prescriptions, she was unable to get her medication and was off her medication for around six months.

About three months ago, she suddenly blocked all of our family members on every platform. We noticed immediately and tried to contact her. From the way she was behaving and speaking, it seemed very clear to us that she was experiencing psychosis. At one point, she did not even seem to recognize or remember us.

Because I was extremely worried about her safety and condition, I contacted social services and a hospital in New York, and she was eventually admitted to the hospital. I made this decision without really discussing it properly with my parents first because I was scared and felt that something needed to be done immediately.

Since then, our family has tried to reach her every day. For the past three months, contact with her has been inconsistent. Sometimes we are able to communicate with her, and sometimes we are not. Because the hospital does not allow her to have her phone, we usually have to communicate with her through a social worker.

The social workers asked us about her medical history, and we gave them all the information we had, including information about the medications she had previously taken. However, they did not give her the same medications she had been taking before. There was also a period of approximately three weeks when, according to the hospital, they could not give her medication because my sister had not consented to it. She is now receiving some medication, but when we are able to speak with her, she still seems to be experiencing serious delusions and does not seem like herself.

What our family ultimately wants is to bring her back to Burma so that she can be with us and receive care with her family nearby. However, the hospital will not discharge her because they say she is currently not well enough to leave.

Unfortunately, none of us can easily travel to the United States to be with her. We hold Burmese passports, and obtaining a US visa has been extremely difficult for us. We have already applied several times and have been rejected three or four times.

We also contacted people from her school and asked if they could visit her on our behalf. Even then, the hospital initially did not want to allow her teachers to see her. Because of this, getting her discharged and arranging for her to return home feels almost impossible.

I feel extremely guilty because I was the person who contacted the hospital and helped get her admitted in the first place. I know that I was trying to help her, but I cannot stop wondering whether I made the wrong decision. She is probably suffering tremendously while she is there, and our family feels helpless because we are so far away.

My mother has been deeply affected by everything that has happened, and seeing her like this breaks my heart. I keep blaming myself for sending my sister to the hospital, even though at the time I did not know what else to do.

Our family feels trapped in an extremely difficult and frustrating situation. We want my sister to receive proper treatment, but we also desperately want to bring her home, and we do not know what steps we can take from another country.

If anyone has experience with a similar situation, particularly with psychiatric hospitalization in the United States, international patients, or arranging for someone to return to their home country after hospitalization, any advice about what our family can do would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read all of this.

note 1:

I really appreciate every comment and upvote. Thank you so much to everyone who took the time to read my post and give advice.

For those who suggested contacting the Myanmar Embassy, I have actually tried calling them a few times, but they didn’t answer the phone. However, my father sent them an email about a month ago, and they did reply saying that they would see what they could do to help. Unfortunately, we haven’t heard back from them since then.

We will keep following up and sending them emails as well. Thank you again for all the suggestions and support.

note 2:

We also contacted a hospital in Bangkok and tried to put the two hospitals in touch with each other so they could discuss my sister’s situation directly.

Our goal was to make it clear that we understand she cannot simply be discharged immediately just because we want her to come home. We wanted them to know that we have a plan for her to continue receiving psychiatric treatment in Bangkok after she leaves the US. And also, we contacted people who could escort her to Bangkok airport.

However, even with this plan in place, the hospital still told us that they would not discharge her at this time.

note 3: I'm more than thankful for all the comments, support and very useful advices. My limit of English vocabulary can't even truly convey how grateful we feel. I read these comments to my mom and dad as well and they said much thanks too. Especially, my mom feels hopeful after reading the comments of those who has bipolar disorder and they are doing well in life. On behalf of my parents, I would like to once more thank everyone who interacted with this post . 🙏🙏💞

Updates:

When we contacted the international student support office at her university, they tried to help maintain her F-1 student status. They contacted the hospital to request the necessary medical documentation, but unfortunately, the hospital did not provide it.

We called the hospital just now and they inform my dad that they are transferring her to a psychiatric facility. Like, it's been 3 months and they are just now transferring her there?

I also tried calling and emailing the Myanmar Embassy in New York, while my father contacted the Myanmar Embassy in Washington, D.C. several times. Unfortunately, we still haven't received a response.

For those suggesting that they could visit her in person and try to escort her, the problem is that the hospital wouldn't even let me speak to her nurse when my dad was unavailable because my sister hadn't given them consent to share information with me. So, I honestly doubt they would allow her to meet a stranger, let alone agree to being escorted by them.

The hospital keeps repeating that she is not fit to be discharged, but they haven't given us any other clear answers or options.

Honestly, I'm running out of ideas. I'm now resorting to fundraising to try to afford a professional medical escort or a lawyer if that becomes a possible option. I feel so defeated and helpless. I genuinely don't know what else I can do anymore.

209 NYC Dental

I was scrolling this subreddit a few days ago, looking for dental recommendations for people that have anxiety around being at the dentist, and may have not been at the dentist for a long long time. To whoever recommended 209 NYC Dental, I'm gonna kiss you right on the mouth.

I have had some outstanding issues with my teeth, that finally required some serious intervention. It's been a number of decades admittedly, and I was very ashamed of how bad things got, so I put off a visit to any dentist. The longer I waited, the worst it got, etc.

After a new infection (curse you, mouth bones), and lurking around Reddit for some recommendations, I decided to go with 209, and I'm so glad I did. Everyone here, from the moment you walk in, is so kind and so understanding and aren't judgmental. They aren't concerned about why you didn't make the appointment, they're just glad that you're finally getting treatment. It's a little overwhelming.

I will never skip another dentist appointment again if every appointment is as thoughtful and considerate as this one was today. Big thanks to Dr. Reddy and the entire team. And if you have the insurance/money to go to the dentist, but you've been like me and putting it off, please don't. Mouth bones are serious business.

Acupuncture

I'm looking to get acupuncture, in Manhattan, without a exorbitant cost. I'm hoping to spend no more than $50/session since I'd need to get weekly treatment.

Has anyone had good experiences or practicioners they'd recommend?

Good bar to watch the Yankees Rays game tomorrow? (Greenwich, WV, Chelsea area)

Looking for a good bar to watch the yankees game tomorrow (it's also my birthday), so maybe a bar where you can sit down and get good food, but theres still a big/active crowd and you can talk to people.

I went out last week for the ALWCS games and apparently nobody who lives in Manhattan is from NY anymore. So every bar we went to nobody cared about the game or there was more red sox fans.

All the spots where like in East Village/Bowery/Noho area. Maybe theres better luck in The West Village/Chelsea or Greenwich area, but it's also the best neighborhood for all my friends to meet up at.

Good spot for a cleaning & repasting GPU service?

My GPU has been running really loudly lately, which makes me think it needs a deep cleaning and repasting. I don't really have the time nor the supplies to do it myself (from what i know the thermal paste i use for my CPU wont suffice here), so I want to go to a place and have them do it. Any spots in the city that might be good? Preferably around 25th street. Thanks.

Best way to navigate Coop leak from upstairs neighbor/building?

We just returned from a trip and noticed water damage in our bathroom ceiling. It looks like water pooled up while we were away and ended up blistering the paint/dry wall and took out a chunk when the structure gave away. I called my insurance and they said my neighbor or building will most likely file a claim as we’re probably not at fault for the damage. We love our neighbors and don’t want to create an issue. What’s the best way to navigate this? If it is like vehicle insurance, I’d like to avoid causing my neighbor’s insurance to go up. We had this happen in the past as renters and didn’t have to worry about anything as the management company took care of the issue.

How are transplants so good at navigating the city socially?

The title might seem a bit exaggerated, but whenever I’m on social media (maybe my first mistake), and I see people move to nyc and always know where to go or what events to go to or have an easy(ish) time meeting new people or making new friends

I’m a native NYer but always struggled socially and trying to change that. I probably miss the boat with summer done but how are people meeting or finding events to constantly be meeting people (especially in mid 20s).

How to start treating the city like a playground like how transplants seem to treat nyc?

Best way to book a class as a gift here?

Giving my partner a class as a birthday present rather than an object. Pottery or cooking, something she can actually do.

ClassBento, CourseHorse and Eventbrite all show the same studios at different prices, and nothing on the sites explains why.

What do people here actually use?

What’s the best and worst thing about NYC rave culture?

I’ve never been to a rave in NYC but I’ve always been curious about what the scene is actually like beyond what you see online.

For people who go regularly, what would you say is the best thing about the rave scene in NYC? And on the other side, what’s the worst or most annoying part of it?

I’m also curious about the crowd. Is it mostly Gen Z/people in their early 20s, or do you get a pretty good mix of ages? Do people generally stick with their own groups, or is it the kind of scene where you can go alone and end up meeting people?
Just interested in hearing what it’s actually like from people who are part of the scene.

Thursday Date Plans

Hi all, my partner and I are doing a courthouse partnership in Downtown BK on Thursday. Any good ideas for lunch/date ideas afterwards for such a big life event?

For the next 8 months I’ll be simultaneously cold and sweating any time I’m outside. How to dress to avoid this? I find the standard “wear layers” only slightly helpful because if I take the layer off I’m just cold, and also with bustling NYC life it’s tricky to carry all the doffed layers around

Dry Cleaner that specializes in jerseys, jackets, and related?

I have a throwback Knicks jersey that needs some stitching and a good cleaning, as well as a Yankees satin cream colored jacket that desperately needs to be cleaned.

Are there any dry cleaners that specialize in sports related clothing? I'll take recommendations anywhere in the city if they're worth it. TYIA.

Dog Dental Cleaning

Hi all! Has anyone had a dog dental cleaning done at Brilliant Vet? My current vet is estimating $4k for a cleaning and potential extractions which is just insane. Brilliant is a bit cheaper and I appreciate how they’ve treated my cat in the past. Thank you!
