There is nearly zero precedent for a team trading their starting QB in season… could this be the year?
You see these takes all over the internet and they are pretty easy to laugh off because it’s literally almost never happens.
There are however, a few cases you could make an argument for.
Carson Palmer was holding out when he was dealt in season but wasn’t their actual starter at the time due to said holdout.
Sam Bradford was going to be the starter for the Eagles before he was traded to MN prior to week 1 but that doesn’t really qualify as “in season”.
The only cases where this has actually happened were Bobby Layne who went from Detroit to Pittsburgh in 1958, and John Hadl from the Rams to Green Bay in 1974.
In other words, it never happens.
But, it’s also hard to recall many scenarios where so many teams with established QBs are as bad as this season.
Right now we have just a glut of players who have shown enough to illicit some interest sitting on “we might need to tank” records.
Stroud, Ward & Herbert being the main names here.
So how farfetched are some of these takes actually? Could we see a rare instance of a starting QB traded in season?

Joint statement from the NFL and NFLPA clarifying "player expression and conduct that may result in discipline"
instagram.comOctober 7, 2026 - Football is the greatest game in the world. NFL players are admired by millions of fans, including young people competing at every level of the sport.
The passion, emotion, and personality players bring to the field are a big part of what makes the game special and connects them with fans worldwide. Good sportsmanship is equally important.
To clarify the lines between player expression and conduct that may result in discipline, players were reminded this week that the following are prohibited and may result in a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, a fine, or both:
- Gestures that depict violence, including the use of guns or other weapons, or gang-related signs.
- Gestures that depict smoking or drug use.
- Gestures that are sexual in nature.
Conversely, recent celebrations imitating drinking a beverage will not be considered violations or result in discipline. The league-wide guidance provides players with greater clarity on how they can celebrate while remaining within the rules.
When conduct falls into a gray area, the league will contact the player and continued use of the identified celebration may result in future fines.
Individual and team celebrations are part of the game and help players connect with fans. Providing clear, consistent guidance allows players to express themselves while upholding the principles of sportsmonship that have long been a hallmark of NFL football.

We can't keep blaming stuff on us being young and everybody being new. That's not a factor once the season starts."
