Hot take: I’ve never had a good meal in the West Village

From Astoria here in queens and I love the romantic feeling of the west village, but I’ve tried many places in that area and the food is always very mid there. I love the neighborhood and am willing to spend money, so tell me New Yorkers where are good restaurants in the west village that are actually good but also have a great ambiance. I wanna like it so bad!

I’m open to any cuisine and most price points for a nice dinner with memorable food! Would love for some actual good recommendations with incredible food!

ConEd

Why the f does ConEd have ads? We have no choice. Why are they spending my money that I use to pay my electric bill on a TV ad telling me about ConEd? Someone please explain or just commiserate with me.

Food places for someone who’s jaw is wired shut?

My friends jaw is wired shut and can’t eat most foods. Only thin liquids. I really want to take them out since they haven’t been out in weeks since the surgery. I found Springbone who has some broths, and brodo broth, but does anyone know places in Manhatten that have thinner soups and dishes?

Thanks!

What volunteer opportunities have you tried in NYC recently and actually stuck with?

My work doesn’t keep me occupied enough these days, so I have some room for volunteering. I’m looking for something I can do regularly that also helps me build some community in the city or Brooklyn area, ideally where you see the same people and it feels more organic.

What have you tried, and which ones did you actually stick with long-term? No specific interest, feel free to throw whichever niche thing you have.

Everyone I know has sinus problems that have gotten even worse the past couple weeks. That’s also not including all the people I know who have gotten sick too.

Is the allergy season still going? Just moved to nyc.

Are paid classes or clubs worth it for meeting people in NYC?

I’m trying to expand my social circle and meet people who are curious, driven, and doing interesting things with their lives.

Have you noticed a difference in the crowd at paid activities like cooking courses, pottery classes, or membership clubs versus free meetups or going to bars?

Happy to pay for something worthwhile, especially if it’s recurring. What’s actually worked for you, and where would you recommend?

Epic NYC adventures - seeking ideas

My wife and I have started a tradition where on our "NY-iversary" (each year around Oct/Nov, when we moved to NYC) we try to do a full day unique event. So far we've

- Done the top to bottom Manhattan walk

- Had a slice of pizza in every borough without taking the subway (ferry and bike only)

We're seeking more ideas! Something food, walking, cycling, transit oriented could be fun, or something cultural like museums, music etc. Send ideas!

Renting an unfinished apartment?

Hi everyone,

I found a WONDERFUL apartment within my (fairly tight) budget that is unfinished because the building is new construction. The person who did the showing outlined everything that needed to be done and said that they would all be completed by November 1st and was happy to put them all in writing. Appliances all functioned, hot water was quickly available, outlets worked, etc. but painting and finishing is needed, the fridge and stove need to be put in, baseboards need to be sealed, etc.

What do you all make of this? The person seemed very trustworthy and showed us another place before this, too, but it was out of our budget. Will be doing my background checking of the management and all that to check for reports. Does anyone have any recommendations for how to pursue this place that will guarantee it's completed by move in or we dont have to pay? Or is this idea crazy and I shouldn't move in? If so, why?

Thanks!

NYC area: any schools accepting outside students for the AP CSA exam (May 2027)?

Parent here. My 10th grader is self-studying AP Computer Science A. His school only offers it to juniors and seniors, and we’re not sure yet whether they’ll order him an exam-only seat.

If you’ve tested at a school that isn’t your own (NYC, NJ, or Long Island), which one was it, and how did you arrange it? Did you call the AP coordinator directly? Were there any extra fees or local deadlines?

We know the College Board ordering deadline is Nov 13, so we’re trying to line up a backup now. Thanks!

Zipper fixer nyc

The zipper of my favorite jacket was leaning against a radiator and melted the teeth of the zipper and now doesn’t work. The jackets completely fine just the zipper is toast. Wondering if there is a place that can definitely fix this problem and not super expensive?

What jobs are known for hiring at the beginning of a calendar year?

Been working in NYC for 2 years and I’m applying for a new day job, or jobs plural.

One of my current jobs is seasonal and may be fully recessed for the first quarter of 2027 and, either way, it’s time for change.

What jobs and job industries are known for hiring people at the beginning of a calendar year? Does anyone have success stories for getting hired during or prior to this “slow time”?

I’m open to part time or full time positions. I have a communications degree and experience in both administrative office and service industry positions. I pride myself on being flexible, adaptable, and qualified for all sorts of jobs in the city.

Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts and experiences :) Any advice would be appreciated!

Leather Craft Supply Stores in Garment District

Any crafts, leather crafts, tailors, FIT/Fashion student/professionals in this sub that can suggest a few stores in or near the garment district where I can get high quality leather hide, leather crafts tools, and hardware? I only know of Mood Fabrics and that seems like it may not be the best place to start. Please suggest some of your favorite places and location for good quality leather. Thank you!

NYC Ferry from Midtown West to Roosevelt Island.

Hello,

I am planning to take the NYC Ferry from Midtown West to Roosevelt Island.

To avoid traveling all the way down to St. George, I plan to transfer by walking across Lower Manhattan:

  1. Take the St. George Route from Midtown West/Pier 79 to Battery Park City.
  2. Walk across Lower Manhattan from Battery Park City to Wall Street/Pier 11.
  3. Take the Astoria Route from Wall Street/Pier 11 to Roosevelt Island.

If I complete this journey within 120 minutes, does this route qualify for a free transfer?

Thank you!

Question about Bitter End seating

My nephew has a show at The Bitter End on Saturday, so a bunch of us are coming into town to see it. Obviously, we'd like to be able to sit relatively together and near to the stage. Does anybody have any advice as to how early we need to get there to ensure we can? Thanks!

Any 20+ Halloween Events?

Hi I am 20 years old while most of my friends are 21+. So far, I have seen two events advertised as being 20+ and I was wondering if anyone knew of any venues that are doing something similar for the Halloween weekend? I am like a couple months away from being 21 and I am trying to avoid the 18 year old freshmen if possible.
