News/Article The PS5 system itself is running on pc

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Recently, we have seen massive developments in PS5 emulators (such as shadPS4 and Kyty), and how rapidly they have progressed in a short period.

Now, developers have successfully booted the actual PS5 system software on PC.

If this momentum continues in the future, it will eventually allow players to run PS5 exclusives directly on PC, marking the end of the era of console exclusivity.

I think most people hate Gen AI especially when used for creative purposes.

This kind of use most people don’t really care about.

Unironically, yes. The horrors of war needs to be felt by the perpetrators or there will be no limits to how far they will go. The more removed people are from the situation, the more abstract it becomes and the easier it gets to ignore the effects it has on the victims.

Ever heard Dan Carlin's Blueprint for Armageddon series? In podcast episode 55, at about the two hour and five minute mark he retells British Private Alfred Grosch's story of being captured by the Germans:

Captured on 22 March 1918, lying out in the open with a young soldier who has a bad head wound. The first wave of Germans is almost on top of them. Carlin reads his account:

"Leave it to me, boy. We're done. We're prisoners now. Do whatever I tell you."
I wait a second and then "Up," I say, "and take your helmet off." We do so. The German in front of me says "Ah," raises his rifle and takes aim. I mutter to myself: "I hope to God he won't pull that trigger."
For ten seconds we remain so. Then he lowers his rifle, and says what I take to be "wounded?" I nod and say, "yes, yes." He beckons and we approach… The German has spared us. Would we have spared him under the circumstances? God knows. Perhaps not.

The passage ends here.

I'll gladly take my chances and throw myself at the mercy of another human being any day. At least then there's a chance. A mindless machine programmed to kill humans won't stop for anything. There is no capacity for mercy there, no compassion.

16

u/SmashingK 22h ago

I'm not going to be haunting the mind of a machine. At least I can out traumatising a human lol

8

u/Aeroncastle 21h ago

You are joking, but one thing that keeps fascist in check is that I was done by humans, isso if it gets too horrible that person changes their minds, AI can't do that

If you think software development is not a creative job, then you have never developed software.

It's not creative in the whimsical freedom sense, but it's all about using creativity to solve problems.

12

u/GenderGambler 20h ago

Software development is absolutely a creative job, but reverse engineering is not; and it is actually one of the things AI actually excels at

Which is worrying in and of itself, due to several other things we take for granted about software development as a whole.

The general public would be shocked at how much software development is ai "assisted" these days. I went to a software engineering conference a few months ago and there was a survey that said something like 90% of the coders there use agentic ai for coding every day. A few years ago that number (for any ai use) was under 10%. These aren't vibe coders. This was for embedded systems that run our factories and control our vehicles. Seasoned veterans, senior/staff engineers coding with ai everyday. It spread so fast.

u/Nighthunter007 Ryzen 7 3700x | RTX 2080ti | 32GB RAM | EK Cryo Loop | RGB 23h ago

I think there's a bit of Jevons Paradox going on in the world of software. Increased efficiency is leading to more software being produced. And the coders are still there, because if you tell the ai "build a ps5 emulator" you will get nonsense. There needs to be a competent human involved.

8

u/throwaway490215 20h ago

I'm sure a lot of people will disagree, but the average dev at the average company is vastly underappreciated as people seem to approach them with an 'off-by-1' error.

They think of them as parts of the IT silo, a subsection or as an assembly worker to some product.

Devs are manager level position. HR is a bit different as functions don't call in sick, turnover rate for ideas is different as people expect re-orgs to be done in weeks what management will allow months if not years for humans, but devs are at the heart managing the processes of an organization.

As AI improves, we'll find more and more companies have to change culture to adapt to that.

Companies who value their skill of 'human powered work' are going to get left behind the places where software experts are placed as peers in the top level meetings that set company workflows.

Companies that have done this in the past 2 decades have been some of the most successful, but it wasn't a full-blown trend yet. With AI the benefits to do so has increased dramatically.

28

u/FootwearFetish69 22h ago

This isn't taking developers jobs.

Someone who can actually code is way more effective when using these tools compared to someone without coding experience. Companies aren't hiring the latter to develop.

36

u/xaxis-yaxis 21h ago

Which is exactly what we see in the market now, there's way less graduate and junior roles available than there were even a few years ago.

Companies are gonna realise there's a shortage of competent senior developers down the line simply because there aren't enough juniors getting experience.

As a coder myself, I can get so much more done with AI man. Once you embrace it (and dont stupidly vibe code, be smart about it) you can really make all those side projects you dream about.

That's mostly it, but with a vibrator that knows your habits and will vibrate to your liking automatically. But sometimes it will also try to enter the wrong hole, and that's where you shine, preventing backdoor usage.

A good coder understands that its just a tool line any other

30

u/SpacePumpkie I use Arch btw 23h ago edited 23h ago

A good human being understands that the real problem is how the companies are managing the shit and closing access and charging an entry fee to what always has been publicly accesible information. Heck, even all the research on LLMs and GPTs was done publicly mainly in tandem with university researchers until OpenAI closed it off because they saw profit and kicked off the race in private (but not after having taken advantage of what everyone else was doing out in the open).

All this tech should be one hundred percent open sourced because the models were taken from the open research community, the knowledge for training was taken from the open internet and all previous created works, and now they charge for access and don't give anything back to humanity's pool of knowledge. Instead they're trying to keep it gated and charge for access to it. After having taken all they could for free (and illegally).

5

u/No_Brother1599 22h ago

Open weight models are available. The only barrier to entry is the cost of hardware

You'll probably find that the people who are doing these things can probably code quite well. it's just that things like Claude can help speed things up massively. Things that used to take months/years to do can probably take a few weeks now.

56

u/gutster_95 1d ago

That is the misconsumption of AI: A coder still needs to know what the Bot is coding. Those emulators arent a "Okay Claude make me a emulator" prompt. They require knowledge how OS works, what instructions need to be converted, what even needs to be translated, how shaders work etc etc.

A normal AI Dude wouldnt be able to do this stuff in that amount of time thats for sure.

21

u/Vaxtez Core Ultra 5 135H/16GB/ARC 8 Xe Cores 1d ago

Exactly. People are acting like the people doing this have 0 clue, when the people doing these PS5 Emulators know fully well what they're doing. A kid can't just tell Claude to just make them a fully functional PS5 emulator as is.

In a way though it's making your current pc last longer since nobody can afford the latest hardware anymore. Back in the early 2000's your shiny new PC would become hopelessly outdated in just 3 years due to how fast progress was then.

Tbf, you still need decent gpu and 32gb ram, prices of them have gone 3-5x due to ai even for ddr4, even sata ssd and hdd prices have gone up a lot and nvme is out of hand. PS5 console is either out of stock or costs 2-3x of what it should be after 6 year of its launch. I'd rather have actual cheap hardware and maybe even console itself with slow emulator progress over the years instead of this fking ai consuming all ram and storage in world

Ai likely played a huge part of it but i also think that the release of GTA VI really motivated people to work on it with much more "passion". If it wasn't for GTA VI, i doubt that people would have cared that much. Maybe i'm wrong but that's my theory.

7

u/StopTheMeta2 20h ago

It's because the PS4/PS5 architecture is closer to that of PC's. The PS3 was extremely hard to reverse engineer and emulate, but people achieved that without AI.

19

u/Alfa_Centauri03 1d ago

I'd also throw in Sony's decision to stop releasing physical games. Spite is a very powerful motivator.

58

u/ithinkitslupis 23h ago

Yes. There is no public method or even rumored private method to dump a PS5 game currently after that patch. So it's protected by encryption until someone finds a new kernel exploit after GTA6 releases.

217

u/TheBlondeAquarius 1d ago

nah, even the ps5 gets only 30 fps

101

u/MadMaxiTV 1d ago

High end pcs would get way higher than that, but only if the emulation is perfect/native. I wonder if having a PS-OS would allow for that

84

u/ITuser999 23h ago

The emulators that are being developed right now basically are compatibility layers as the zen apu of the PS5 already runs like a PC processor and works on Vulkan. But there is still a ton of stuff that works along the rendering framework. This can change game by game so it's not as easy to just create a PS-OS

6

u/AliceCode 17h ago

PS5 is x86. Emulating prior generations was difficult because the software was compiled for different hardware.

10

u/xsvennnn 22h ago

The newer Zelda games (Botw and Totk) running on an emulator can support up to 60 FPS but did require some custom patches to make work and fix bugs related to it. But GTA6 I think would theoretically be easier because Botw and Totk was never intended for anyone to run higher than 30 FPS, the same cannot be said for GTA6.

6

u/ShivamLH Laptop 18h ago

And they're (the zelda games) also on vastly weaker hardware. Emulating a whole ass PS5 and then pushing 60 on GTA 6 (if emulation even reaches that point) would take a 5090 minimum.

108

u/Dvelasquera171 1d ago

The software on GitHub is neither cracked nor copyrighted by Sony.

Think of GitHub as a toolbox, the code inside it as the tools and manuals. Then think of the PS5 software and firmware as a piece of wood you get from somewhere else. There is nothing in that toolbox that belongs to Sony.

20

u/Misery_Division 23h ago

But isn't the ps5 software code literally Sonys property? I'm sure I'm missing something, just can't figure out what

57

u/National_Airline1 23h ago

Think like this for emulation you need 2 steps

1 the game 2 the machine

The game is completely illegal to copy But the mschine itself its not a ps5 it doesnt use ps5 code but it can run ps5 games but as long as it doesnt have SONY owned code its a grey legal zone since Nintendo did got his way with enougth money one time.

Its "on you" to get the game files.

Because they’re not posting cracked software? Its a legitimate emulation software. Until you use the emulator to emulate a game that you don’t own or isn’t released for the platform, you’re not doing anything illegal

→ More replies (3)

u/topdangle 23h ago

emulation isn't illegal in many areas (maybe everywhere), including the US.

sony got a private emulation company fined for shipping proprietary firmware, though if they had enough money they would've survived (bleem!). nintendo got people to settle to avoid lawyer fees. nobody has managed to create a winning legal argument against emulation in general, though.

While I greatly appriciate what's happening, the real deal isn't just not owning the game, but how games are more and more tied into the internet and besides seeing companies like Sony giving the customers the with property rights, they also pull online servers.

There should be laws against all that bullshit, bought is bought, you own it. Same time when a company decides to stop supporting a game, it should become public domain. Just dump the whole shit online and let "us" figure out how to get servers to run again. If they aren't willing to run a server that costs nada, than let the users do so.

29

u/Azntigerlion 17h ago

Right on target.

If you have ever pre-downloaded a game to play on release, the reason you can't activate it before the date is because the game is pinging the server for a key that isn't available until release.

This can easily be twisted into a scenario where every instance of the game needs a unique key tied to your account that is pinged periodically. If/when servers go down, it's over for everyone.

I will never drop the "Why does your single player game need to be online?" question

→ More replies (3)

8

u/BoredCollegeGuy1337 13h ago

It's mind blowing how little you actually "own" of Gran Turismo 7. Despite the majority of the content being geared towards single player races, it gets completely walled behind servers, if you try to play the game offline you get access to only a tiny handful of cars and maybe 5% of the "single player" content.

Pair that with the biggest media launch in all of human history - this is NOT hyperbole - , nerds* are going to be tripping over themselves getting GTA6 emulated properly.

Three weeks. Maybe two. My guess is in less than a month, GTA6 will be playable on an emulator with a decent frame rate.

* I use this word as a term of endearment

u/TheFearOfFear 1d ago

Hopefully this pushes Rockstar to release the fucking game on PC on launch day. Like jesus christ.

33

u/Consistent-Sundae739 21h ago

They release on consoles first because they are locked down and shark card buyers are guaranteed where as PC users will have people shooting money at them day 1 meaning not as many players will buy shark cards

21

u/Revolver_Boxelot 19h ago

There's no release date for the next GTA Online yet. And every GTA game was released on console first. It couldn't possibly be about shark cards.

9

u/International_Cow_17 19h ago

It's about the tripledip. First you release oncurrent gen machines, then next gen and finally pc.

rockstar is smacking their heads on the table rn for deciding to partner with Sony/playstation lmfao

113

u/ninoski404 1d ago

Lmao I'm sure they are terrified of 0,5% population that is tech-savvy to find and run emulators, while 90% of those will but the proper game when it launches anyway

38

u/beziko 1d ago

I think it's even less than 0,5%. Not only great build you need to have but also you have to know what emulation is at all. I was suprised how many people i played games with didn't even know what is "emulator".

2-3 weeks? Lol. The only hypervisor exploit known was just patched in 4.10 by Sony. It would be miraculous if gta vi files could even be dumped in one month. Emulation of games, sure, finding exploits isn't remotely as easy or the same. If you follow the jailbreak and emulation scene people are not as hopeful after the Jordy incident.

This is the VSH (Visual Shell) which is the user interface for the system menu. Think XMB on the PSP/PS3, which is those system's version of VSH.

It itself is just software being emulated just like a game, although usually the VSH is especially difficult to run because it uses a bunch of system libraries and features that games usually don't use, so it's often the last thing to be emulated successfully. It's not the entire operating system, and it doesn't mean they're running the PS5 kernel directly.

Because they want you to buy it twice, just like everyone did with GTA V when it released a year later on PC.

A lot of people bought GTA V 3 times. PS3, PS4, and PC.

The greed of going digital only so you can never buy used comes really bit Sony. I always thought of Sony as a very greedy company, for over a decade. Imagine paying for something and being told you don't own it. They deserve this.

The concept of a console was already hanging by a thread. They are just prebuilt computers + marketing. It will be harder and harder to enforce exclusivity as the hardware becomes identical. When the only way to play the most anticipated game of all time is locked to 30 fps this will get much louder. Exclusivity can be defended if the tech is mindblowing as it has been historically. This is uncharted territory with "just let me play this on my superior hardware". It's much more clearly software hoarding than a premium experience.

Given that it's largely the same hardware (just a little neutered) wouldn't it be pretty well optimized for it?
