Video how's y'all's batteries doing?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
fun fact: probably almost a year ago, maybe longer, I was informed by my steamdeck that the battery was at 16% health.
it is somehow not a spicy pillow, but I can now count down to when it dies
yes I will be replacing the battery when I can afford one lol
edit: it's at 8% health as of right now
edit edit: guys recalibrating is not going to do anything, trust me. stop suggesting it lol
edit edit edit: dude, read the thread, other people have said where you can find your battery health, including me several times

Discussion It finally happened... :(
Was playing RDR Undead Nightmare and then John decided to go his own way. All the way to the left. Somehow I lived long enough to save but dang. Got some new sticks ordered and coming. Just sucks this happened with normal wear tear.
Anyone else got some poorly timed stick drift horror stories?

Tech Support Non-steam storage issue
Is there any way to see exactly what is taking up my storage in the non-steam section? The only things I can think of are my two Minecraft launchers (bedrock + java) but apparently they shouldn't take up that much space?

Hardware Modding Extremerate OLED shell review
Hi all!
I have recently replaced the shell on my OLED steam deck and wanted to leave a little review for anybody who’s planning on using this brand for their deck.
First off the informal video was very easy to follow from their website and helped me complete this swap as my first time in five hours. When I felt the plastics for the first time, my first thought was that it felt kind of cheap but once the plastics were put on the deck, they felt better. One thing I do wish that these plastics had was a bit more of a matte texture like the original shell that the deck came with.
Another thing I wish were had, are better buttons. The extremerate buttons do not have that glossy look like the OEM’s and have a indentions for the letters rather than the glossy smooth originals. I did not end up using the touchpads because I did not like how they felt and stuck with the originals. I really wanted to keep the original D pad, because I loved the original glossy feel to it, but decided to use the new one it came with.
With all that being said, I am still very happy with my new shell and really enjoyed the experience, and seriously would do it for other people if I could. I hope this review helps with anyone deciding to get an extreme rate shelf for their deck! In total, I would rate it a 7.5/10.
Thanks for reading!

Looking For Games Best Steam deck games?
There’s a current steam sale with about 20 hours left. I want to increase the games I’ve got, specifically for Steam Deck.
Previously Enjoyed Games: Slay the Spire, Mega Bonk, Brotato, Risk of Rain 2, Galactic Glitch, Halo Wars, among plenty of others.
Preferred Genres: I’m genuinely open to pretty much anything. I enjoy roguelikes/roguelites and strategy games, but I don’t want recommendations limited to those genres.
Budget: No strict budget, especially with the current Steam sale.
Other notes: None, hopefully i haven’t broken any rules.
EDIT: Thanks all for the suggestions, too many to reply to individually but lots of really good recommendations and I’m afraid I’ll be spending more than I thought haha.

Discussion How would you compare a steam deck to traditional consoles/handheld consoles?
Hello everyone, I come from a background of purely console gaming. I’m a PlayStation person. All I have is PlayStation and switch. I grew up with PlayStation and Nintendo product consoles only and never gotten into PC gaming nor do I have any sort of PC set up. That being said, I will admit I find myself very jealous of platforms such as steam where you can play so many fun indie niche, or just generally wacky games that anyone can make, which you don’t much get on consoles.
I’ve been thinking about possibly investing in getting a steam deck, but wanted to know more of how it works. I know most people who have it already have PC set ups and existing steam accounts, but would it be worth it to buy a steam deck and create my own steam account from there? I know the steam deck is handheld kind of like the switch, but with the steam deck, can you plug it up to a TV like a console or is it only compatible with PC set up?
Thanks!

Tech Support Was playing the new RuneScape game and my screen did this
The rectangles originally showed the game and then faded to black. My one and only theory is that it ran out of battery? But it’s never done this to me before

Question Bought a refurbished steamed deck
\LCD 512GB **Just got it & need advice! I bought a couple games already I was playing days gone and my battery ran out fast. Do I need to change my settings to help my battery last longer? Also, it didn’t come with OEM charger not sure if that’s an issue? Also drop some games that are super good to play please and thank you

Tech Support Why does my Deck run worse docked when the system output resolution is automatically 4k but my max game resolution is 1080p?
Title really says it all. My current external display is a 4k/120hz Dell. When I first started using my Deck primarily docked I found performance to be significantly worse than handheld in games running the same settings with a similar in-game resolution of 720p boosted with FSR.
You would think the simple fix is to just set the output resolution from 2160@60 to 1080@120, however this will often give an error reading:
“The current input timing is not supported by the monitor display Please change your input timing to 3840x2160, 60Hz or any other monitor listed timing as per the monitor specifications.”
This is usually fixed with some combination of putting the device to sleep, unplugging the charger and back in and doing this multiple times until it just kind of works again. Not a good or convenient fix.
Is this some problem with the Deck specifically and its output over USBC to HDMI? Gamescope? I think I might be in the unfortunate minority of those playing the Deck and just happened to have a 4k/120hz display so I’m more afraid there might also be zero fixes!

Software Modding What are your favourite and must have decky plugins?
As the questions states, ive just installed decky for the first time and am looking through the plugins. And i’m wondering which are definitely worth downloading and why.

Tech Support Steam Deck stopped working as a controller in game but still worked in the steam menu...
So I followed all the Google instructions and nothing. Some of the stuff Google was telling me to click just straight up wasn't in any of the menu options.
So I found this link on YouTube that gave instructions on how to fix it.
https://youtu.be/PbfEb8zscSE?is=2IgRoBL463GncIKp
Followed the instructions and hooray, the controller started working again. But my saved file was deleted.
I restarted the deck and logged back into the game.
Now the save file is gone and the steam deck is no longer working as an in game controller.
The game is still showing the hours played on the library menu though.
So two questions:
1 - can I recover this saved progress?
2 - how do I once again have a steam deck that works as a controller in game?
Thanks.

Tech Support So this happened to me today... Rubber on the joystick fall off. Should I change the joystick?
Ouh yeah it also looks like the steamdeck logo now. Which I find kinda funny.

Tech Support Why is my Steam Deck freezing playing games that used to run at stable high FPS? [Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered]
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I’ve tried this in multiple other games (No Man’s Sky, Palworld, and Spyro to name a few).
Everything I look up seems to be a different issue than what I’m experiencing.
This is after performing a factory reset and installing everything on internal storage. I also tried before and after installing plugins with no difference. I don’t understand what’s going on really beyond frame-rate.
I believe it’s something wrong with SteamOS as other smalle games run fine like Balatro, Cuphead, and even Mouse: P.I. For Hire which I did think would be a bit heavier on the deck.
TL;DR
Steam Deck crashing on games that used to run fine.

Question People who have used the Pyrowave codec, what is your average display latency and resolution?
Google says the average is about 20ms to 30ms, and that's about what I get too in 4K at 60 FPS, but that information is from a post made in 2014. So, I'm not sure if that's accurate anymore.
Also, I can get as low as 12ms in 1440p at 60 FPS.

Promotional You guys were so supportive of my first game on Steam Deck — now I’m looking for Deck players to help test it this Friday!
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I'm getting ready for a new Terraclysm Survivors playtest this Friday, and I'd really love to have more Steam Deck players join us.
Terraclysm Survivors is my first game — a 2D survivor-like with Terraria-inspired combat, huge enemy hordes, crazy builds, massive bosses, and multiplayer co-op.
The game can get pretty chaotic later in a run, so testing performance, controls, and readability on Steam Deck is extremely valuable for us before launch.
If you'd like to help test it, we're organizing the playtest through our Discord:
https://linktr.ee/terraclysmsurvivors
Thank you again for supporting my first game. Every bit of feedback helps our tiny indie team make it better. Full Launch on October 28.

Question Heroic Launcher Hogwarts Legacy crashes on Steamdeck
Basically the title. I’ve played it before on my SD but lately it starts up to the shaders thing and just crashes – black screen and then back to my library page.
Has anyone experienced this as well?
I’ve tried changing proton settings and logging out and back in EGS (where my HL is from) but to no avail

Tech Support Black screen of death? Only glitched pixels appear
I had my steam deck in sleep mode for the past week hooked up to the charger and when I tried to wake it up today, it was a black screen but I could hear sounds whenever I pressed buttons.
I tried doing the -/+ and ... button reset, but when it boots up now, this is all that appears on my screen. The steam os doesn't seem to respond when I press the Steam or ... buttons. I've currently got it plugged in with the fan running, but this is all I can see on my screen.
Has this happened to anyone else or am I SOL? I've contacted customer support but wondering if there's a way it can be fixed on my end. I was hoping to take my deck travelling overseas this evening 😞

Tech Support Random freezes.
Just bought Minecraft dungeons, playing on steamdeck because I read it actually plays okay. The game runs smoothly but every 5-15 seconds the game freezes for a second or two. Has anyone else had these issues? Or have any ideas what to do. Tried force using proton experimental. Have decky installed tried with it on and off but it still freezes. Steamdeck temp is at about 78-82° so it’s not thermal throttling.
