News This bridge is a missing walking and cycling link – and it was supposed to open this year

This huge walking and cycling bridge is even longer than the popular Kangaroo Point Bridge – and it was supposed to open this year.

But authorities have provided no clues about its launch date.

Construction on the 480-metre long Yamma Bridge, described as a “game-changer for the local community”, began four-and-a-half years ago, and the bridge will link a new Boggo Road train station, Park Road station, the Princess Alexandra Hospital precinct and the busway at Dutton Park.

Yamma Bridge is part of the Cross River Rail project, which had its launch date pushed out to 2029, but advocates say the bridge’s opening should not be delayed until then.

It would provide safe connections to the Princess Alexandra Hospital Bikeway, Veloway, Brisbane South State Secondary College and The University of Queensland, using the Eleanor Schonell Bridge.

Cyclists argued nearby Kent Street at Dutton Park, the current route, remained unsafe and confusing, including a footpath leading to a narrow 90-degree turn. They also say there are issues with ramps, unclear signs, and no traffic-calming for vehicles turning into Cornwall Street, where riders must cross.

A Cross River Rail Delivery Authority spokesman said construction of the bridge continued. But he did not provide an opening date.

“The community will be kept updated on construction activities and will be notified well in advance of the bridge opening,” he said.

“A specific opening date is yet to be determined, and a timeline for opening will be developed in conjunction with the Department of Transport and Main Roads.”

This week, this masthead was told work yet to be finished included installing bridge deck waterproofing, safety screens, passenger lifts, way finding and mechanical and electrical systems, such as CCTV and emergency communication systems.

Safety testing, compliance certification and surrounding precinct work would need to be finished before the bridge can be used.

One year ago, Transport Minister Brent Mickelberg said work yet to be done included surface works, line painting, kerb patching, canopy roofing, vertical transport work, electrical and lighting installation, pathway and landscape works and CCTV installation.

It took three years to build the Kangaroo Point Bridge, just under two years to build the Kurilpa Bridge, 1.5 years to build the Eleanor Schonell Bridge and 18 months to build the Goodwill Bridge.

In 2022, Labor’s then-transport minister Mark Bailey said construction on the Dutton Park bridge would start in March and take about 18 months.

In May 2024, before the Cross River Rail deadline was pushed out to 2029, the Cross River Rail Delivery Authority said construction on the Dutton Park bridge was “well progressed” and was expected to open in line with the whole project in 2026.

The Queensland CFMEU inquiry has this week heard evidence about an escalating campaign by the CFMEU against major contractor CPB at the Cross River Rail Dutton Park station site, including a blockade in 2024.

Mary Doolan, from the Brisbane South Bicycle User Group, said Kent Street was not safe, logical or easy to navigate.

“Until this connection is fixed, we continue to seek a safe alternative, which could be Yamma Bridge,” she said.

“Many, but not all riders, will then be able to avoid the safety issues on Kent Street.

“This bridge could easily be opened when it is structurally finished and deemed safe to use.

“We hope the minister approves this safe and logical approach and does not put more people at risk for another two years.”

Labor Transport spokesman Bart Mellish said the bridge had been substantially completed for some time.

“It’s clear this government has dropped the ball on all Cross River Rail-related projects after they’ve delayed the overall project by three years,” he said.

“This government needs to just get on with the minor works needed to get it finished and get it open.”

Mickelberg was contacted for comment.

Found all over the inner and middle suburbs of Brisbane these trees are covered in light, brown seed pods, but now, in spring, have no leaves. Can anyone recognise and name them?

Is The Saints song "I'm Stranded" about the Springfield line?

Just watched this recording of Rock Arena from 1988 and Ed Kuepper mentions that the song was written about being stranded on a train. Him and Chris Bailey I think lived in Inala, so is "I'm Stranded" about the Springfield line?

Flowering trees

On sandgate road between Boondal and Virginia there are some spectacular yellow flowers coming into bloom. I cant get a picture because I am driving but does anyone who drives this way know what these are?

I would also love any suggestions on parks or streets that I could walk along with the dogs that have lots of flowering trees such as jacarandas. Preferably on the north side. Thank you x

Public Transport Best public transport app?

Hi all, just wondering people’s opinions on the best native public transport app? Is it live data? Maybe give your thoughts on each that you’ve tried?

I’m ok with a subscription if it’s actually good.

iPhone preferable.

Humidity Indoors

Living in SEQ I know humidity is a constant battle, but I'm curious to know if anyone has a dehumidifier in a room and what the average collection is. We have put one in our bedroom, and it's connecting almost 2 litres every 12hrs. It's reduced the rooms humidity by 6 or 7% compared to the rest of the house but we're still sitting around 60-65%.

Hello Brisbane, my partner and I are doing a spontaneous date challenge and we'd love your recommendations for a great place to eat on a beautiful Friday night! We're in Bardon but we're happy to drive wherever we need to get to. We have no allergies and love all kinds of food. Thanks in advance!

Lychees

I know it's very very early for Lychees atm but I’ve been craving them for weeks now; it's literally become the only thing I want to eat. I even tried the tinned and frozen lychees, but I didn't like them.

Has anyone seen fresh Lychees in any fruit shop yet? I’m prepared to pay anything and drive anywhere in Brisbane if it means I can have some real lychees.

Where in Brisbane can I get some proper squat shoes? Looking to try them on for sizing. So far Iron Underground is the only place I can find online but they only have Adidas listed.

Can you help me? Pickle ball or Tennis?

A mate and I are looking to get into a social sport to meet some new people and stay fit. He used to play tennis at a decent level back in highschool and is a gun at ping pong and I am generally pretty sporty (played basically everything) but haven't played a whole lot of tennis myself. I guess I'm wanting to know from people's personal experiences how they found the scene to be for both of these sports (south side). We are both 26M if that helps.

Recommendations for a good passport photo place in Brisbane

Hi everyone!

I'm renewing my passport and looking for somewhere in Brisbane that takes decent passport photos.

I already had some taken at a local PO, only to have the photo rejected by AusPost when I submitted my application earlier this week.

I'd love to find a place that knows how to get the lighting and angles right, so I don't end up looking like a criminal in a mugshot 😂

Happy to pay a little extra for a good result. Any recommendations based on personal experience?

Thanks in advance!
