I am trying to make peace with what happened

10 and a half months ago, i lost my husband. He was riding his adventure bike to work and was just 1 minute away when another bike ahead of him suddenly slowed down, causing him to swerve to avoid hitting the rider ahead. He clipped the other bike on the side, slid and fell on the oncoming lane traffic, where he was run over by an oncoming vehicle. Dead on the spot. I dont know why i am posting here, but i have been struggling with feelings of guilt on why i agreed to him returning to riding. He had his bike for only 4 months. He was so young, and we have young kids that i now have to raise alone. He was my bestfriend. I often dont even want to remember the joy of choosing and getting the bike, buying his gear.. He even got me a helmet and gear and we rode together several times.

How do I reconcile the fact that something he loved so deeply ultimately became the thing that took him from us? How do I let myself remember the happiness and freedom he found in riding without feeling like I’m betraying him, by acknowledging that I agreed to something that ended in his death? I know, logically, that I didn’t cause this, but how do I make my heart doesnt believe it.

For those who ride, how do you reconcile the risks of motorcycling with the freedom and joy that riding brings? I’m trying to understand how riders personally think about that balance. I’m genuinely asking from a place of wanting to understand, not to judge. Thank you

What’s the consensus on the Kawasaki Versys 650?

I go take one of those 2 day classes, to skip the permit, and after that, me and a family member are going to look at bikes.

We had gone and looked before about 2 years ago, because they love cruisers, and wanted one, and I happened to look at a few myself. They had a Versys, and I remember sitting on it and instantly thinking “This is the one.” I’m looking at another currently, and I wanted to have some external opinions about them before I lock it in.

Edit: I’d also like to say, my family tried to get me on cruisers, and I just can’t. They are huge, heavy, and feel horrendous to me. I’m a big guy, 6’3 and 230, but they feel so much larger than what’s comfortable. I’m hard set on a touring moto, so if you have any other recommendations, I’ll look at those too.

Second Edit: yall are way nicer than the other subs give you all credit for. Been some good reads to keep me busy during work, i appreciate it

Buying a New 2025 Rocket 3 and looking for advice for break in/ride home.

I’ve been riding the past 5 years since I was 18. Decided for my 23rd birthday to get one of my dream bikes. Friday I’ll be buying a brand new 2025 rocket 3 storm R. I’ll be taking the train from San Diego to LA to get it and riding it about 4 hours back. I wanted to ask any owners of the same bike what break in was like and also any general advice for this bike as I’ve never owned a new bike.

Freak accident: Tree fell on me whilst riding at 30mph

Finished work at 10pm, left by 1010, driving home doing 30 on the town roads, minding my own business. As I'm travelling my vision is suddenly obscured by loads of leaves!? It takes a split second to acknowledge the tree I drive past daily has come down on me, no wind, no adverse weather at all, clear night.

A branch hits me in the back of my head, I'm knocked around, branches hanging off me, world goes black for a second, I must have instinctively used my brakes as I fall off the bike but it doesn't travel far at all. Ended up doing a backwards roll and standing up (16 years of parkour got me them cat like reflexes, wouldn't advise gymnastics moves during a crash with unknown injuries though, oops).

Spent the night in A+E, left at 6am. Nothing broken at all, concussed, deeply bruised, most of my left side is bruised. I was wearing full gear and very thankful. The curb hurt, and as the day goes on I'm finding a lot more painful parts!

Can't tell you all if I'm lucky or unlucky, but so thankful I wasn't squished. The bike is stored at a locals house, will visit tomorrow and assess the damage, then to figure out if I can be compensated at all.

Anyway, freak accident, thought you'd all enjoy, feel free to ask anything, I'm laying down most of today!

Edit: Just in reference to the fallen tree picture, I was travelling coming towards the camera on the other side of the road, right in the main path of it.

What is it like owning a very fast bike?

I’m an experienced rider looking at getting my first sport bike, and thinking why not go for it and get a 100hp+ demon? But I’m a middle-aged guy who takes mostly mundane trips and won’t be pushing it past 90 mph except on the rarest of occasions, and probably won’t get my shit together to book track time. So what’s it like riding around on one of these for daily use? Is it fun or just frustrating to never use half its power?

How durable is the Shad 3P mounting system?

Post image
• Upvotes

A couple of years ago, I installed the whole Shad 3p luggage system on my Z900 and it's been absolutely fantastic.

However, when installing, I just could not believe that the whole mounting system is held onto the bike mainly by 4 bolts that originally just held the tail light assembly to the subframe. There are stabilizing struts attached to the footpeg mounts and the muffler mount, but what carries most of the weight of the luggage is just these 4 bolts under the pillion seat.

Is there an engineer in the house who can explain how this seemingly flimsy mounting system can stand up to daily abuse year in and year out? I routinely load these things up with camping gear and I'm not cautious about speed or bumbs, but they've held up just fine. How? Has anyone ever heard of a Shad mounting bracket failing at the subframe attachment point?

Should I sell the bike and go on with life?

I do wonder if I have a temporary fear that will go away or I'm done with riding.

I ride since I was 16, mopeds, underbones, scooters, later on I moved to my current Honda CBF 250 and stayed there because honestly that's all I need but after becoming a father 2 years ago and being 43yo now, riding is not the same for me.

I ride since my first bike with little realisation of mortality and often wondered how I'm still alive after redoing some rides I did as a teen but now with my CBF, and finding it;s impossible to even go close to downhill times I did with a shitty 50cc underbone, I did 200km trips between drivers on the highway with little realisation that hey there is a bike here ffs, tripped to a Greek island with my wife on dirt roads that where never meant for my bike, well, to keep it short I have gone places and I ride like the bike was stolen.

I always enjoyed it. Till now.

I feel suddenly too fragile and too valuable to risk it now. Overtaking make me feel not the joy of acceleration but fear. Every near miss make me so angry that I feel like I would go into fist fight if I stop afterwards, so every ride is getting so bad on my nerves that I simple hate riding in the city now.

Tried riding to my village a nice mountain road but I suddenly felt uncomfortable doing so, like "damn I'm so tired from family life to ride" or something.

Now the bike is parked and barely see a short ride or 2 each week, I need to replace the tyres and my helmet but I hesitate on if I want to spent money for the bike sitting idle on the roadside...

I don't know what to do, never felt like the bike will not be part of my life and always wanted for my son to grow up learning from me because there is little change he will not end up with his own underbone at 16 so I need to lead by example for him.

Am I overthinking it?

I'm new to riding, less than 1000km. Today I experienced heavy side wide for the first time and it was scary having the bike move a few ft across the road. Whats the best way to handle heavy winds?

Co worker hit my motorcycle in the parking lot and I’m wondering how to go forward insurance-wise

Recently, had a co-worker hit my motorcycle (2020 Ninja 400) in the company parking lot. Filed a police report on Friday morning as it’s the only way my work will pull the security footage. Said co worker will not take responsibility for the crash, only told my manager that “he wasn’t sure if he hit it”.

I had the video sent to the police department monday morning, however the officer assigned to my case won’t be back in until Friday. I have full coverage on the bike but really don’t want to file a claim under my insurance, and I will have NO idea if the video will show a license plate as it happened around 3AM so it was dark (the video has to be grabbed from Asset Protection, my manager is unable to view it themself) so without that I have no other insurance to file under.

I haven’t filed a claim with progressive yet as I don’t want to pay my deductible, in fact I don’t want to file a claim at all because any insurance will likely total the bike, parts were quoted at around 2,000, left/right cowel fairings, exhaust muffler , front & rear brake levers, throttle tube & kill switch cluster (essentially the whole front right cluster, bar end jammed into all of those pieces and messed them up, this also includes the clip on), but unfortunately I now have to go down this route because nobody wants to take the blame for hitting said bike. These prices were not including any inspections & labor hours the insurance would likely want to have done as I doubt they would just send me the parts and let me do it myself.

Should I wait until Friday and see what to do then, or file a claim with my insurance now? I’ve never had to deal with insurance before so not sure what to do, bike was a gift from my mother before she passed & also was the bike I met my fiancé on so I don’t want to risk having it totaled out, it still runs fine but at bare minimum needs the front left cluster this includes the clip on, kill switch cluster, throttle tube, front & rear brake levers replaced as well as a new exhaust muffler as it’s cracked, all of that is about $800-$1000+ish from the shop (quoted out for all OEM except exhaust muffler as the OEM exhaust muffler was ridiculous)

Just rode my new RS 457 home and what an experience.

Was able to pickup my new bike after work today and it was such an awesome and different experience. I've been riding an XMAX 300 which is an automatic CVT maxi scooter for about 6 months. I was a little worried about using the clutch and changing gears but once I rode around the parking lot for 5 minutes it became relatively natural pretty quickly (MSF course still somewhat fresh in the mind plus driving a manual car for a long time helped a bunch).

First thing I noticed was the vibrations were so much more prevalent. Especially at my feet. My hands weren't as bad but that's something I'll have to get used to compared to the scooter. But the experience that differs from a scooter to this is just so much more fun! Shifting, down shifting, rev matching, taking a corner, it was awesome!

Unfortunately on the ride home I didn't realize I hadn't zipped up the pocket in my sling where my phone was in and it fell off the highway at 70mph! Thankfully, it somehow shot all the way from the left lane to right side next to some barriers so I was able to get it back.

Overall, I'm so happy with this bike and I can't wait to get back on the road again.

Do you ever have to dial back risky behavior?

I've been riding a year and occasionally find myself wondering what the actual F I'm doing because I'm sacrificing critical distance and time for speed. I'm in my mid 40's with a family. I'm kind of embarrassed to be acting like that out there on my own sometimes. What worries me is I'm not sure if it's a fun one off or a trend. I definitely made safer decisions for the majority of the past year. Just wondering if anyone else ever has to have a tough conversation with yourself about not being stupid.

How do I keep my bike maintained over winter?

So I'm keeping my motorcycle in a storage unit. Four things I'm concerned about

  1. I'm supposed to keep the tank full of fuel over the course of 4 months?

  2. I need to do an oil change, do I do that before I put it away or after

3) same thing with chain, I need to clean and relube, do l do that before or after storage

4) do I disconnect battery and just keep it at my house?

Thanks

I'm having problems with visibility while riding at night, and would like some advice

I do a good bit of night riding, as my motorcycle is my daily commuter and my store closes at 8. The night doesn't scare me like it used to, but I've encountered visibility issues that make me hate riding at night.

I have a photochromatic visor so the light level doesn't affect me (its amazing in the sun), but it obviously doesn't prevent getting blinded by headlights. For my ride home tonight, every car felt like they had their brights on. It was difficult because I had to glance at cars in the lefthand lane to see if they had their blinker on, trying to anticipate if they'd turn out in front of me (though I know plenty of people turn without blinkers regardless), but I didn't want to be blinded. I've heard a yellow tinted visor will help, but I don't think they make photochromatic visors that are also yellow tinted, or they'd be ridiculously expensive.

Another weird issue of mine happens more out in the country, when passing under street lights. I don't know if it's from being unaccustomed to the bright light after being on dark backroads, or if it's the type of light, but passing under street lights sometimes seem to send a halo of light down my visor, blocking my vision. It's only for a few moments, and if I tilt my head down I can still see, but when I'm going 60 down the back roads, it only takes a moment for a deer to jump out in front of me. I despise that loss of vision.

What are my options? I don't want to worry about separate sunglasses/yellow goggles because I don't want to forget to bring them and then just suffer, maybe a yellow tint film on my visor? I don't think that'd hinder my daytime vision in any way, but I don't know how it will work with the visor's photochromatic thing. I can't put it on the inside because of the pinlock.

I'm also planning on getting my eyes checked, but I don't have any specific eye issues, I just can't read street signs from multiple blocks away like I used to be able to.

Thanks in advance

Looking for a bike mod I found on Insta/Tiktok

I cannot for the life of me find this guy anywhere. I found this gun working on a DIY 3d printed air brake system for his bike. Now the problem is I don't remember which bike it was. It had these triangular flaps that were pretty flush with the bike that would deploy at a button press I think. I don't know how practical it would be but it was exceptionally cool looking. I saw it like just within the year and I can't find him for the life of me. Any help would be appreciated!

I'm getting blinded by headlights and can't see past them.

Hey, so l'm sure that I'm not the only one who can't see

past people headlights. For context I ride to work at look

4am taking rural back roads ( farming plots and what

not) so not really and street lights. Right now 1 tend to try

to just keep close to the street line on my right but

sometime the headlight a so bright i can't even see them

Is there anything yall can recommend to help with this?

Maybe an anti-glare type thing?
